This is not a guide to tell you if you should or shouldn't level hold. This guide simply shows you a comparison of the pro's and con's of holding and advancing. It is meant to be directed at those new players that don't know why the game has a level hold feature, not the experienced players that have already decided if level holding is right for their style of play or not.

    Merit Explanation:

There are level rank merits at level 2, 6, 11, 26, 31, 50, 71 and 100. Learn more about rank triggers.

You will gain a level medal merits every 5 levels. So 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.

The 5 level honor bar merits are earned at levels 25, 50, 75, 100 (x2). The first one may be activated over level 10 now. Can someone please confirm this?

Learn more about medals and honor bars.

The 50 purchasable merits cost 250 points each. You can buy 1 merit for every 2 levels you advance.

    Bounty Cost Explanation

For every level you advance it costs players a minimum of $10,000 extra dollars to bounty you. That $10,000 is added directly to the bounty, making you worth a minimum of $10,000 more for every level you advance.

    Becoming a Leveling Target

Individual players and sometimes even Factions as a whole will sometimes use higher level players as leveling targets. For example, if you were a level 60 but your total gym stats are only 5,000,000, many level 20's or 30's in the game could easily beat you in a fight. They would add you to their enemy list or faction leveling guide as someone that can be easily defeated for huge experience. Obviously this is undesirable.

So it is important that as you level your gym stats stay on par with the average players at that level. If you find it very difficult to defeat lower level players or players at your level, you may want to level hold and train in the gym until you can beat most people around your level.

    I'll edit the poker thing.

Why are people down rating this? I'm not even recommending to level hold or not, just letting new players see the advantages and disadvantages.

Its an interesting discussion although I know I lack the self control to let that 'upgrade' button sit idle on my screen for too long.

I usually level hold until I think I can upgrade 5 levels for the next merit. Just the way I prefer to play.

One thing that's not mentioned in original post is all you have to do is hit the upgrade button when you need those things in the pro column. There's a certain point to level hold and certain point to move forward for everyone that's different or some cases not existent.

One thing not mentioned is becoming a leveling target. The last thing that I would want is for my name to get that out there that I'm push over.

Updated the level targeting suggestion. Also had someone message me saying that for new players the merit portion might not be clear, so I've added an explanation there as well, and a brief synopsis about bounties.

I think a fairly common approach is not to level up so much that your place in the HOF level leaderboard is higher than your place in the battle stats leaderboard.

Nice thoughts. im firmly in the camp that you should level up as soon as you can.

When you get to my level it takes AGES to gain a new level so you might as well level up as soon as you can but having said that you should be spending 75%+ of your energy in the gym to avoid becoming a levelling target.

I wouldnt recommend attacking high levels and leaving them just level naturally whilst using most of your energy in the gym. Rushing to gain levels seems pretty pointless to me just as pointless as level holding.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.

you don't gain more respect for level holding. In fact, you can't beat as many people because of your low life, so level holding causes you to gain less respect. Same goes for experience, beating a level 30 is worth the same amount of experience to a level 2 as it is to a level 99. Although why a level holder cares about experience, I'll never understand...

The reason to lvl hold should not be higher respect but it is an added bonus for merits to my knowledge. I will test it out in an upcoming war and report my numbers.

Of the 6 attacking stats (strength, speed, defense, dexteritory, life, and criticals) I would put life as the 5th importance. Only in very close fights do life and criticals play a role. So gaining more respect is relative especially if stat enhancers are introduced.

You must not chain often if you think life isn't important. Or you just smack around noobs who can't fight back.

And what merits are gained by level holding?

I'm much newer than u so I know u have lot more experience. I am noob less than 275 days old. I regularly kill people in their 40s. So if u consider that a noob basher so be it. My other stats win fights at best life will prolong those who I kill. On a rare occocasion life be the determining factor. Critical hits can actually win a fight more often than extra life. I'm not saying life is worthless just not as important as the others.

The primary merits gained is defends, runaways, and stalemates. The secondary ones gained are medical items, respect, rounds fired, and critical hits. The lower the level the more often u are targeted. Another great thing is learning who the enemies weak players are for others in the faction.

It's actually amazing to see how crappy some players are.

This is incorrect, tested thoroughly. Keeping everything else the same, I was able to level up faster from level 30-35 than level 20-25 by attacking higher level targets instead of lower level targets. This was tested exclusively doing hospitalizations and the same type of theft crimes.

Look at my stats for attacks won and respect gained. I can tell you that with my battle stat setup, life is almost never a factor. Those that I'm going to beat I usually can beat without losing life (or very little,) and those thatbeat me usually kick my ass hands down.

YOUR character setup does not reflect everyone's.
