INTRODUCTION
This guide aims to cover most of everything related to Forgery, the 11th crime in Torn's Crimes 2.0.
This crime is quite unique in its execution, having timers similar to Bootlegging but having a LOT more material components and different ways they're measured, plus exclusively predetermined item outcomes.
If you already know the basics just skip ahead, I'll try and keep everything organized for clarity's sake.
If you're just looking for advice on this crime, skip to the "Points Of Interest" section.
This is the twelfth of my series of guides on Crimes 2.0, my other guides being

GLOSSARY:
CS = Crime Skill, your skill at doing the crime, shown at the top of the crime page.
Unique = Unique find, marked with a star under the "ATTEMPT" button, can only be found once.
Crit = Critical failure, leads to loss of CS and sometimes items, sometimes life, sometimes prison time.
Project = A multi-step process selected by the player when starting this crime.
Step = Each individual step within a project, required to obtain a reward.
FIRST STEPS (What you need to start)
Forgery is the crime with the most amount of material components to date, so this section will be different from others for the sake of keeping this short.
I made a public sheet containing all of them including where to find them, you can find it here.

THE PROJECTS
(Forgery UI)
Forgery is a fairly straightforward crime: You select one of twelve projects available, you do the steps required to fabricate a fake document, and you're done! The complicated part is knowing which ones are best, which ones give you cash, and which ones are best left untouched.
There's currently twelve projects available with more to come in the distant future. Most projects begin locked, and unlock as your CS increases.
PROJECT STEPS
Every project has a set amount of steps to complete, anywhere between 4 and a dozen. More complex documents will have additional steps, while simple ones will have usually four or five instead. All steps cost 5 nerve.
All steps have one or two material components, these being tools or consumables, meaning a single project may require anywhere between four and twenty material components to complete. Acquiring the required materials in advance may help you streamline this crime. Some steps may be risky and will have this icon atop the steps. Risky steps are more likely to fail.
Some steps may be dangerous and will have this icon atop the steps. Dangerous steps are very likely to fail.
Some steps also take some time to be completed, like printing a document or waiting for paint to dry. Projects undergoing a cooldown cannot progress until the necessary time has passed.
(A Skeleton Key project on cooldown)
Finally, some specific steps "lock" certain tools until their completion, meaning you'll need multiple copies of some tools if you want to do parallel projects.
Currently, only Printers during 'Printing' steps and Sand during 'Mold Forming' and 'Casting' steps fall under this category.
CRIME SKILL GAIN
All steps, regardless of risk level, associated project, specific step type or materials being used give the exact same amount of CS.
The only exception is the final step, where the forged item is obtained. The final step will have an associated CS gain multiplier depending on the project that's being done, with longer and more advanced projects having a higher multiplier than the early projects.
Going forward within this guide, regular steps will be established as "100% CS gain multiplier", with the final step being a multiplier to this CS gain.
NEGATIVE OUTCOMES
The way critical failures work on this crime is fairly interesting.
Failures will use whatever consumables were to be spent, being an immediate loss, however no other negative effects will occur.
Critical failures on the other hand will tend to set back progress towards the current project.
The amount of progress lost depends on the exact project and step being performed: Crits at the end may scrap the project entirely or for documents set you back to the printing stage, while crits during the forging process may undo one or two steps of progress, alongside standard penalties.
For the most part, critical failures will not have any additional effects. Sometimes you may lose the tool that was used for the current step, like losing a printer while printing a document or losing a perforator while finishing up a concert ticket, however this crime has no known jail outcomes and if the newspaper is to be believed, will not have them for the foreseeable future.
(Two critical outcomes, one leading to a setback and the other leading to total loss)
ALL PROJECTS
This will be a breakdown on each project, the materials required for their completion and a general safety assessment considering all steps and their success rates.
DRIVER'S LICENSE
CS Requirement: Available at start
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer and Scissors
Materials consumed: Blank PVC Card (1/100) and Adhesive Plastic (1/100)
Completion CS multiplier: 200%
General Safety Assessment: SAFE
The most basic of projects and also considered the safest by most. Material cost is minimal, but so is profit, having a sale value of $5,000. Crits often during the last step.
PARKING PERMIT
CS Requirement: Available at start
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer and Scissors
Materials consumed: Cardstock (1/100) and Adhesive Plastic (1/100)
Completion CS multiplier: 200%
General Safety Assessment: SAFE
Second project and a new item, remarkably safe. Material cost is minimal and so are profits, although being slightly better than Drivers' Licenses. Crits often during the second-to-last step, sometimes during the last. Arguably, at least in my personal opinion, better than Drivers' Licenses for early CS growth.
CONCERT TICKET
CS Requirement: Available at start
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Scissors and Perforator
Materials consumed: Cardstock (1/100)
Completion CS multiplier: 200%
General Safety Assessment: MODERATELY UNSAFE
Third project, less safe than the alternatives. Crits fairly often during the second-to-last step, sometimes during the last step. The value isn't much better either, so I'd advise you to avoid this one altogether.
LICENSE PLATE<
CS Requirement: 25
Number of steps: 6
Tools needed: Embosser, Lump of Coal, Scissors, Hand Drill and Permanent Marker
Materials consumed: Aluminum Plate (1), Spray Can: White (5%), Bond Paper (1/100) and Spray Can: Black (2%)
Completion CS multiplier: 400%
General Safety Assessment: RISKY
Remarkably unsafe, particularly for step #4: Stencil Cutting, with one crit every three attempts on average. Materials are fairly cheap, and the outcome is worth a pretty penny as well. Very likely to be used for a future crime.
Becomes safer as skill increases, becoming UNSAFE at CS75 and MODERATELY UNSAFE at CS100.
BIRTH CERTIFICATE
CS Requirement: 25
Number of steps: 5
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Typewriter, Wax Seal Stamp and Fountain Pen
Materials consumed: Bond Paper (1/100), Candle (1) and Inkwell (1%)
Completion CS multiplier: 300%
General Safety Assessment: UNSAFE
Surprisingly safe except during step #4: Sealing, where you'll fail 1/4 and crit 1/20. Still, surprisingly good for CS progression, even if it may not seem that way.
Becomes safer as skill increases, becoming MODERATELY UNSAFE at CS75 and SAFE at CS100, most financially viable project if you have the Wax Seal Stamp already.
DIPLOMA
CS Requirement: 25
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer and Fountain Pen
Materials consumed: Bond Paper (1/100), Certificate Seal (1), Glue (20%) and Inkwell (1%)
Completion CS multiplier: 250%
General Safety Assessment: MODERATELY UNSAFE
The last two steps are equally risky, failing once every 30 attempts on average. Certificate seals are quite pricey at the time of posting, making these a net loss to make. Still, the multiplier makes these fairly good for increasing CS, and the crit rate isn't too terrible either.
SKELETON KEY
CS Requirement: 50
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: Skeleton Key, Sand, Crucible, Double Cut File, Hand Drill and Polishing Pad
Materials consumed: Brass Ingot (1)
Completion CS multiplier: 300%
General Safety Assessment: RISKY
Few steps but #3 is risky so beware of that. Sand will limit you the most here by far. Only consumes brass ingots which are found aplenty so quite profitable.
PRESCRIPTION
CS Requirement: 50
Number of steps: 4
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Typewriter and Fountain Pen
Materials consumed: Medical Bill (1), Bond Paper (1/100) and Inkwell (1%)
Completion CS multiplier: 250%
General Safety Assessment: SAFE
No risky steps, arguably the safest alongside drivers' licenses. Quite profitable when sold to the city, even more so since medical bills got added to wallets and such.
TRAVEL VISA
CS Requirement: 50
Number of steps: 5
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Embosser and Scissors
Materials consumed: Bond Paper (1/100), Glow Stick (1) and Adhesive Plastic (1/100)
Completion CS multiplier: 350%
General Safety Assessment: UNSAFE
Step #3 is risky, everything else is extremely safe. The most profitable in this CS bracket sitting at around 4k/N. Likely to be used in a future crime.
Becomes safer as skill increases, becoming MODERATELY UNSAFE at CS75. Best option in terms of CS gain per nerve spent.
ID BADGE
CS Requirement: 50
Number of steps: 5
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Scalpel, Graver and Card Programmer
Materials consumed: PVC Cards (1/100), Credit Card (1), Glue (20%) and Lanyard (1)
Completion CS multiplier: 350%
General Safety Assessment: UNSAFE
Steps #3, 4 and 5 are somewhat risky. Introduced prior to OCs 2.0's closed beta and used within those crimes, its use is immediately noticeable.
BANK CHECK
CS Requirement: 75
Number of steps: 6
Tools needed: PC/Laptop, Printer, Scissors, Embosser, Perforator and Fountain Pen
Materials consumed: Bank Statement (1), Bond Paper (1/100), Inkwell (1%)
Completion CS multiplier: 350%
General Safety Assessment: UNSAFE
Step #4 is dangerous and it shows, though steps #3 and #5 aren't safe either. Still, very good for progression and profit at this CS bracket, even more so after its addition to wallets.
POLICE BADGE
CS Requirement: 75
Number of steps: 7
Tools needed: Police Badge, Sand, Crucible, Double Cut File, Graver, Hand Drill, Grinding Stone and Polishing Pad
Materials consumed: Brass Ingot (1), Crushed Enamel (4%) and Blowtorch (25%)
Completion CS multiplier: 450%
General Safety Assessment: RISKY
Step #4 is dangerous while step #6 is risky. Pretty bad for progression and not much value for the effort, but still may be used in a future crime.
ATM KEY
CS Requirement: 75
Number of steps: 6
Tools needed: Thimble, Sand, Crucible, Hammer, Double Cut File, Graver, Hand Drill and Polishing Pad
Materials consumed: Brass Ingot (1) and Blowtorch (25%)
Completion CS multiplier: ???%
General Safety Assessment: RISKY
Step #3 and 5 tend to fail a lot, but the low material cost compensates for that for the most part. It does require Sand, which is a pain to get.
PASSPORT
CS Requirement: 75
Number of steps: 12
Tools needed: Scissors, Embosser, Hot Foil Stamper, PC/Laptop, Printer and Sewing Kit
Materials consumed: Cardstock (1/100), Bonded Latex (1), Glue (40%), Bond Paper (1/100) and Adhesive Plastic (1/100)
Completion CS multiplier: 750%
General Safety Assessment: UNSAFE
Steps #3 and #4 are dangerous, so are #7, #8 and #12 but they won't tell you that, everything else seems fairly safe. Highest CS gain multiplier but not worth it for progression. Highest payout sitting at ~9k/N though material cost due to bonded latex may cut heavily into your profits. Likely to be used for a future crime.
Becomes remarkably safe as skill increases, and at around CS85 it becomes great in terms of CS gain per nerve spent.
POINTS OF INTEREST
INCREASING SKILL LEVEL
Increasing CS in this crime is difficult, just imagine pickpocketing but on crack.
Avoiding projects with risky steps tends to work for the most part, as well as exclusively doing one of the three first projects and ignoring anything else. Any way of reducing crits is a way of progressing faster, but other than that there's not much to help you here.
Changing my advice in this section yet again since prices have dropped significantly since this was first posted. You have two options here: Sticking to Drivers' Licenses all the way to max skill, or switching projects as your skill goes up.
Option 1: Sticking to Drivers' Licenses will do the trick and you'll hit max skill with very few critical failures and almost no material cost, but in turn you'll need far more nerve to reach max skill compared to swapping to more effective projects, and you won't have any of the forgery products that are/may be employed for crimes and OCs.
Option 2: Do Drivers' Licenses until you reach CS50, then switch to Travel Visas all the way to CS100. You can also swap to License Plates at CS90 without much loss in progression, if you wanna prepare some of those for future crimes. This will maximize profits and progression without costing an arm and a leg (damn Passports).
SKILL MULTIPLIERS
As stated before, the final step for each project has a skill gain multiplier, which may change your choices when tackling this crime. Just bear in mind: This multiplier also applies to crits, meaning critical failures at the last step will hit you harder than crits during a project.
The multipliers shown here aren't necessarily the truth but rather the closest approximation I could gather with limited data.
- BASE (All steps except the final one): 100%
- Drivers' Licenses, Parking Permits and Concert Tickets: 200%
- Diplomas: 250%
- Birth Certificates: 300%
- License Plates: 400%
- Skeleton Keys: 300%
- Prescriptions: 250%
- Travel Visas: 350%
- ID Badges: 350%
- Bank Cheques: 350%
- Police Badges: 450%
- ATM Keys: ???%
- Passports: 750%
Doing something safe, with low crit chance during the last step and with a good multiplier may be the way to increase CS quickly.
MATERIALS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
There's a lot of materials, maybe you don't wanna buy them or prices are too high? Maybe you want a refresher on what items you need for making travel visas?
I made a public sheet containing all this information around a month before forgery released, you can find it here.
For the most part, you can find most components from burglarizing industrial targets, others from city stores or overseas, and others as unique outcomes from different crimes. The sheet has the recommended amount to last you a lifetime, so good luck!
THE MERITS
Just like all other crimes so far, this crime also has two honor bars native to it, and all the medals pertaining its category.
Reaching CS100 will grant one the Documented Success honor bar.
Image shamelessly stolen from CeeZ
Having ten of the same project in a state of cooldown will grant one the Assembly Line honor bar.
Printing doesn't count, easiest way of getting it is reaching CS25 then doing ten license plates. Step #2: Background Painting has a 1hr cooldown so you'll have plenty of time to get this merit.
Finally, all attempts at this crime are considered counterfeiting crimes in regards of Counterfeiting offenses medals. It shares category with Bootlegging, which is significantly better for grinding these medals.
THE NUMBERS
FORGERY RISK BREAKDOWN
Full breakdown of each step for each project, doesn't have much data currently but I hope to keep updating it as more logs come in.
SKILL LEVEL BREAKDOWN
As is known, increases in skill level lead to increases in success rates. The following is a (very convoluted) breakdown of these increases.
The brackets are quite wide, I'm aware, but this still reflects how higher skill levels lead to higher success rates for each project, and as such waiting to reach a higher skill level before attempting more difficult projects may be the way to go.
PROGRESSION BREAKDOWN
The following is a somewhat simplified breakdown on which projects are best for quick increases in skill level. This does not take into consideration increases in success rates as level increases, the presence/absence of risky steps and their impact on crime chains, nor extra nerve to spend due to setbacks and project losses.
This breakdown is based on the assertion that all process steps give the exact same CS gain, and only the last step is affected by the gain multiplier. This also takes into consideration the difference in skill loss due to crits in process steps and crit steps accordingly.
The most important takeaways from this is that drivers' licenses remain best for almost the entirety of the crime and you can easily reach max skill doing only drivers' licenses. Switching to either prescriptions or bank checks may be a good idea if acquiring future crime components is your goal, while travel visas appear to be the best for progression though they do require a fairly expensive component for each attempt.UPDATE MAY 26TH
Due to popular demand, I've done a more complete progression breakdown which accounts for player skill level as well as other factors. Most of the popular projects are here, but the following have been skipped due to being considered "not particularly good" for progression.
(full breakdown of projects by skill level including average success and crit rates)
Besides the previously stated increase in success rates as skill increases, this table is solid evidence of which projects are better at certain skill brackets. Namely, sticking to Drivers' Licenses all the way to CS50 is ideal, then switching to Travel Visas up to CS90 becomes an option, finishing with Passports from CS90 and onwards. For a more economical approach, switching to Birth Certificates at CS60 then License Plates at CS80 seems like the best path.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Quite fond of this crime. Not as mechanically complex as others like Cracking or Disposal, but still very entertaining plus any crime where I can rid myself of all the stuff I get from Burglary is a win.
The way printers work for parallel projects, how cooldowns work for different steps and projects and the variety of goods to be forged does put a smile on my face, however I'm still waiting for the "future additions" to this crime to make this better, since as it is, twelve projects feels like too few for my taste.
In terms of profits this crime is... there, I guess. More consistent than cracking but also as risky as pickpocketing, the CS75 projects may be able to reach 10k/N which is pretty solid cash, but the true worth of this crime will come the day the components generated start being used for other crimes. I got high hopes for license plates, travel visas and passports to be used for very high-paying crimes down the line.
Eleventh guide dedicated to particular crimes and twelfth guide overall including the primer, it was remarkably short compared to the last two so I'm quite happy with that. It was also particularly nice to know that I nailed 90%+ of my guesses for this crime, quite proud of that one :P
DATA GATHERING (DONE!)
Data gathering through manual exports for this crime has finished.
The vast majority of logs for Forgery was obtained through the following userscript developed by Hemicopter and Lazerpent, which automatically stores crime attempts into a remote database. A massive total of 340k logs was collected through this script for Forgery alone, so if you want to contribute to other future projects and improvements to existing projects, consider installing it.
