So I've decided to make a simple guide that should help out newcomers to Torn in their first few days, answer some common questions and hopefully avoid some very common mistakes. If you see something wrong, please let me know! First of all, there's a lot to Torn, and you won't learn everything here. If you're unsure of anything, ask in new player's chat, people are generally happy to help. Anyone with a red name is staff, and you can trust them to help you too. It is a marathon, not a sprint. You shouldn't expect fast results for anything. The experience will be low, and the amount of money you get will be so little that it's not worth it. Be friendly and respectful, because there are many players who won't hesitate to make things hard for you if you step out of line. [/li] [li][left][color=#333333][/color]That being said... Try to be sociable! Torn is an online game with a lot of other players. Make some friends, join a faction, make some enemies. (but not too many!) it's all a part of the experience.[color=#333333][/color][/left] [/li] [li]When your account is 0 days old, you can't be attacked. Up until day 14, you're part of a protected class of players who can't be attacked by anyone older than 14 days. Once you do reach 14 days old anyone can attack or bounty you, so try not to make enemies. [/li] [li][b]Don't buy property, rent it.[/b] When you rent it, rent the best house possible even if it takes all of your money. (explained more below) [/li] [li]The dump is a terrible way to spend your energy. Unless you're extremely lucky, all energy is better spent in the gym to raise your battle stats. [/li] [li]Don't be a beggar, or you'll quickly find yourself spending more time in hospital than anything else. [/li] [li]Join a faction and get involved socially with the game as soon as you can. [/li] [li]If you want, you can turn on profile, bazaar and optionally forum signatures too, they're good fun but turned off by default. Check your trades carefully and if something seems too good to be true, it might be. Staff won't help you if you're scammed, since it's not against the rules. Work your way through George's Missions on menu on the left or on the top bar if you're on mobile (swipe the navigation bar to scroll it). The button is lit up green. His missions will show you the ropes and teach you the very basics of how to play and navigate Torn. After that, it's up to you how you want to take your Torn experience.[color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color][b]I'm in hospital already! How do I get out?[/b] Oof. Yep, getting put in hospital is a common thing in Torn, especially when you're new and weak. Prepare for this inevitability. First, get some money. [size=12]Stock up on [/size][size=12][url=https://www.torn.com/wiki/Hospital#Items]medical items[/url] [/size][size=12]such as first aid kits from the [/size][url=https://www.torn.com/imarket.php#/p=market&cat=medical-items][size=12]Item Market[/size][/url] to fix you out of hospital whenever you land in there. Medical items, in addition to restoring a small amount of life serve primarily to reduce your hospital timer. Small first aid kits take 20 minutes from your hospital timer, first aid kits 40, and morphine 70. Make sure you have a bunch of these on you at all times so you can escape from hospital when needed! (Remember, hospital really isn't that bad! You're not locked out of the game. If your energy and nerve isn't full, you might not even need to be out of hospital! In Torn, money you put in the bank it stuck there for the whole investment period and you can't touch it. Money in your hand is at risk of muggers though, so you still wan't to get rid of it somewhere. If you have a lot of money, a property with a vault is great, but as a new player you probably don't have your own vault. If you're level 15, you can put it in the Cayman Islands offshore bank. One way people like to keep their money safe is to buy items or points as these can't be mugged from you, and then selling them when they need money, but this can be slow and unreliable if prices change.[color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b]How do I get more energy? [/b] The easiest way to get more energy is just to wait, but it can also be restored quicker by using points refills, drugs, energy drinks, hotel coupons, certain job specials, and more. Energy is a precious commodity, and most ways to get it are fairly expensive. Check out this page on the wiki for a quick rundown of the different ways to can bring up your juice quicker. How do I get more missions?[/b] New missions with The Duke unlock at level 5, but don't worry about him too much yet. After you beat his missions you'll get one more per day. His missions aren't progression through the game though, they all involve completing a fairly simple objective (usually attacking someone) for some mission points and pocket change. At the time of writing, he is the only mission giver in the game right now that will give you new missions each day. [b]How do I level up?[/b] [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&t=16095866&start=0]Kayla's New Player guide to Levelling Up[/url] Doing crimes, training in the gym, attacking people, all give level exp. Your exp bar is invisible, though. Torn is a long term game, you shouldn't expect fast results. The fastest way to level up is through combat, by attacking other players and clicking 'leave' once you win. Higher level targets earn more exp, and mugging/hospitalising earns you less experience than leaving. Avoid attacking other players in the New Players Chat, as they'll be a low level and give you low exp, as well as earning you a bad reputation, leading to you getting attacked yourself. [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=61&t=16034448&b=0&a=0&to=18301173]Baldr's Levelling List, targets with low stats you can attack and leave to level faster.[/url] Keep in mind that leveling up fast does not make you stronger, it might actually make you weaker, since that energy you're using to attack is energy not being used in the gym, which is where your stats come from. More levels don't mean more battle stats. However, getting to level 15 is beneficial so you can travel and make money running flowers and plushies, and makes rehab for drug addiction. Just for these two reasons, I recommend making a push for level 15, but after that just take it easy. If you're dead-set on leveling up quicker, get your stats are above 1k total, you can level up quicker than you would normally by attacking players a higher level than you and clicking 'leave' once you win (leave gives full exp. The other options give less). Think carefully before you attack though, you can't see someone else's stats, and an opponents level is not an indicator of their stats. If you're looking for good power-leveling targets, check Baldr's Basic Advice which I linked at the top. There's quite a few of them. [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]So why level at all? [/b] You can choose to hold your level when you get enough exp to level up. Even if you choose not to level up, you can still gain battle stats, and all that changes is your level doesn't go up. But if you don't need levels to get strong, why level at all? Different parts of Torn unlock at certain levels, such at Poker at level 5, the wheels at level 7, and most importantly (and finally) the ability to travel to other countries (where you can buy flowers/plushies cheap and sell them for huge profit back in Torn) at level 15. Leveling up also increases your maximum life. Some call life the 5th battle stat. You will also earn more merits through leveling up, which are always useful. So why hold your level then? Before level 15 there isn't much point, since being able to travel is quite lucrative business, and ability to rehab away your drug addiction is vital to your training. After level 15 though, holding your level can make you look weaker than you really are (but with less life, you are indeed weaker), and let you win more defends. It makes you easier to bust out of jail, and makes you less of an enticing target for faction warfare. However, the pros do not outweigh the cons and in my opinion, level holding isn't worth it.[color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]How do I beat people up? (or how do I know who I can?)[/b][b][color=#333333][/color][/b] [color=#333333][/color]I'm glad you asked! Because what's the point of all that training if you're not going to whack people? If you've done George's missions, you already know how attacking works, but to get better at them you need to know a few things. Firstly, you want to be equipped with the best gear you can get. While you'll still lose against stronger statted opponents, having better weapons and armor than your target will give you an edge against those of a similar stat range. See "What weapons and armor should I use?" below for the best stuff to use. Secondly, your battle stats are (almost) everything. Not even the best weapons and armor in the game will save you against someone who has vastly more battle stats than you. Unfortunately for you, unless you pay for a stat spy from another player, you can't see another player's stats. Unless you already know them, this means you're going to have to make an educated guess. Their level isn't an indicator of their stats, since anyone can choose to hold their level. Age can be an indicator, since someone younger than you has had less time to train, but that's not perfect either. Someone 4000 days old may be weak as hell just because they've been inactive, and someone younger may have been training even harder. Check their personal stats. Look at their Xanax and LSD use, if it's higher than yours, they've had more energy to use than you. Xanax and LSD give energy, and if they've been using it to train with then they're possibly stronger. Look at their days been a donator, their refills used too, all of this are a clue as to how much energy they've had to play with. Check their attacks won, because it shows how much energy has been used not training. Also, look at their defends won and their defends lost. If they've won a higher ration of defends compared to how many they've lost, they might be stronger than they appear, and other people have already found that out the hard way. It can be tricky at first to gauge a person's might in battle from their personal stats, and everyone, even the best players can guess incorrectly and lose a fight from time to time.[color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]How do I raise my battle stats? [/b] [color=#333333][/color]This is quite important. You of course know that you bring up your stats by going to the gym and clicking train, exchanging your energy for more stats. You're going to do that a lot, but you can also do it much more effectively, raising your stats quicker. The more happiness you have, the more stats you will gain. It's a good idea to bring up your happiness as much as possible before training from things like your house, candy, erotic dvds, etc. to maximise how just how swole you're going to get by the time you're done. It's a very well researched topic, and certainly more than I can explain here, so I recommend you check out the "Happy Jumps" section of [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=threads&f=61&t=16034448&b=0&a=0]Baldr's Basic Advice[/url] and the [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=threads&f=61&t=15995191&b=0&a=0]Gym Training For Beginner's[/url] Guide for more information. Remember that your stat gains are exponential. The more you have, the more you will get. If you can start off strong, you will find yourself much stronger than other people who didn't know the most effective ways to train of a similar age. [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]What faction should I join?[/b] When picking a faction it's really up to you and the faction you pick. Check the faction recruitment section on the forums, or ask your friends for help if you have any. You should read the front pages of different factions and see what upgrades that are on offer, as well as what their requirements are. You can join a small faction, or a big faction. Big factions will of course offer greater benefits, but may have higher requirements and be more strict in what they want from you. Don't just hit apply on any random faction and hope for the best! My advice is to find one with a lot of members, so you'll have an active faction chat and lots of people to talk to. Look at total respect, more respect means more upgrades. If the faction profile says what upgrades they have, look at what they've got and see if you like them. Look at the levels of the members. If it's all brand new players, it probably doesn't have much going for it. Finally, chat with the faction members or leaders and see what they think of it, asking them about what it's like, what they do, schedules, requirements, etc. There's a forum thread on [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=threads&t=16047138]Factions for New Players[/url] here, but there's really no way to guide you on which faction to join. I highly recommend reading it, but I will give a brief summary here to give you an idea of what it's about. What crimes you can do successfully is determined by your Crime Experience (CE). Like your level experience, this is a hidden stat, and the only way to tell where abouts your CE is at is by your Natural Nerve Bar (NNB) your NNB is what your maximum nerve is, taking away any merits you have in nerve, and any that is given to you by your faction. It goes up by increments of 5 at certain milestones of CE. As a new player, yours is likely to be 10 or 15. However, if you ever go to jail, your CE is reduced by a percentage rather than a static amount. This means at high levels of CE, going to jail can be a large setback. It's better to stick to crimes are are known to have little to no jail results. When you start off, you should be just looking for cash (2 nerve crime) or bootlegging DVDs (3 nerve crime). As you do more crimes, your CE raises to the point where others become possible, and soon you can shoplift jackets from the clothes store (this is the best 4 nerve crime as being jailed from this stealing jackets is almost unheard of). Once your NNB increases to 15, try pick pocketing the kid, and when it reaches 20, try thorough robberies. By the time your NNB is at 25, you won't need this newbie guide anymore. Other guides to crimes will help you from here! [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]What about housing? Everyone has a Private Island and I have an apartment. What gives?[/b][b][color=#333333][/color][/b] [color=#333333][/color]First of all, don't buy property. It's an easy mistake to make, but you don't need to buy and own a house. Just like in real life, it's [url=http://www.torn.com/properties.php?step=rentalmarket]much cheaper to rent[/url]. The amount of money it costs to buy an apartment could be used to rent a Villa or Penthouse for a few weeks. You should definitely spend your money on renting the best house it's possible for you to get. But why? A better house means a higher maximum happiness, and happiness is a very important stat because it directly affects a few things. Most notably, it affects how many stats you get when you train in the gym. Maximizing your happy early on is the difference between starting off well and lagging behind. When you're going to train, you want to have as high happiness as you can get to maximise your stat gains. Your battle stats are arguably the most important thing in Torn, next to your wealth.[color=#333333][/color] [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]What weapons and armor should I get?[/b][b][color=#333333][/color][/b] Everything you need can be found on the item market. Most good factions will also have a stock of weapons and armor that they can loan you for free. For a melee weapon, you want a macana/diamond bladed knife. It's one of the best melee weapons in the game and is relatively cheap compared to a lot of other options. Don't assume that because something is more expensive, it's better. If you can't afford a macana just yet (you should be able to soon, it's not actually a lot of money!) then an ice pick is a decent alternative until then. A diamond bladed knife is the most common choice of melee weapon, because it has even higher damage than a macana, at the cost of slightly lower accuracy. The chainsaw sucks. For your secondary, grab a BT-MP9, it's pretty much the best secondary weapon for it's price. Might even be the best secondary period depending on who you ask. Not everyone agrees on the best primary, but you won't go far wrong with a Enfield SA-80, an ArmaLite is better, but you probably can't afford it just yet. As for armor, just check the armor rating on the armor and get the best thing you can afford. Anything is better than nothing! A full set of leather armor is easily obtainable. For the rest, you can just upgrade as the funds become available to you. Don't worry if you can't afford it all right away. Your melee weapon will do you just fine. In fact, your melee weapon might be a better choice than your guns until you're able to put weapon mods on those guns. While we're talking about weapons and armor, it should be noted that not even the best weapons and armor in the game will save you if you have lower stats than your opponent. Stats are what will win you fights, not your weapons. Your equipment certainly helps, but they're more like augments to your stats. If your stats are poor in comparison to your opponent, you're going to lose no matter what you have. [color=#333333][size=12] [/size][/color] [b][color=#333333][/color][/b][b]I have some merits now, what about those?[/b] [url=https://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=threads&f=61&t=16014167&b=0&a=0]Mat's "what should I use my merits on" guide[/url] Merits are permanent character upgrades that are awarded to you for getting [url=http://www.torn.com/wiki/Awards]awards[/url]. What you spend them on is up to you. It depends on your play style. That being said, I'd recommend Education Length. Educations take a very long time without any reductions. Aside from that, a lot of people like Life, Critical Hit Chance, weapon masteries (if you only use one type of weapon) and it's hard to go wrong with passive stat increases. It costs a lot to reset your merits, so think carefully before you apply them. [b]Is donator status worth it?[/b] Very yes. As well as a few other things, it grants you +50% max energy and +50% energy regeneration. That alone is worth the price. Subscriber is even better since you get a couple free (and often very valuable) items each month. [b]Closing tips. Anything else?[/b] Enjoy yourself! Despite all the tips and guides and instructions you'll get from other players there really is a million ways to play Torn. Ultimately, do whatever you enjoy doing, whether it's min/maxing and chasing merits and wealth, running an unsuccessful business, becoming a master criminal, or beating the crap out of everyone it's up to you. Be social! Use the chats, get involved in the forums, in your faction chat, talk to other players. Make friends, make allies. Make enemies, and make rivals. Interacting with other players will go a long way in enriching the experience beyond logging in to spend your energy and nerve and then logging out. Above everything else, have fun with it, and try not to take anything too seriously.
