Banking in Torn [Updated from 07/2021]

Note: the original post was based around a personalised situation which helped guide me towards bank cap between the options I had through banking term lengths. I’d included personal costs such as drugs, DPs and property rental, since I would have no liquid cash for 3months.

$2b is the standard banking cap. 3b cap is given through the 10* Oil Rig job perk.

I will list a few alternatives with close interest to banking, such as other Oil Rig perks.

    1. The initial return:

These figures assume 10/10 merits into bank interest.

    Given rates at today’s date: 1w: 1% 2w: 2.42% 30 days: 5.92% 60 days: 11.72% 90 days: 20.05%

As you can see from the daily results – it’s not as lucrative to bank 2 months as opposed to 1 month.

If you need liquid cash quite often, it seems you should bank at 1 month intervals for the best return on your cash. This pays $355.2m per 90 days, a difference of $45.8m or 88.57% of the 90 days. Not a bad return if you constantly need payouts of $118.4m.

Otherwise, it is clear that 3 month terms, earning $550k more per day (at 2b cap), is the best earner from bank interest.

    2. Varying bank interest rates:

Bank interest rates do vary. Therefore in some circumstances nullifies my comment above (regarding banking 1 month instead of 2).

Considering this, please be mindful of the comment as you may notice that one term does actually reward more per day than the longer.

Please see this tornstats page for interest rates and the data: clicky

    3. Buddy banking vs stocks:

Given that 90 day investments return approximately 81.3% of your investment per annum, you can assume that a 50-50 buddy bank investment can halve this (to 40.65% APR)

This basically means over 90 days, assuming a 50-50 split again, your 2b investment in somebody else’s bank can yield $200.5m.

Credit to Tranquilizer for this - at the time of his calculations, he has figured that the first tiers of SYM (56% ROI), FHG (48% ROI), TCT (46% ROI) and GRN (45% ROI) will pay out more per dollar invested than buddy banking.

Other stocks, at 34% and under ROI, aren’t going to yield you more than a buddy banking gig, so if you can trust somebody, put your money in them to get more bang for your buck.

    4. 5* Oil Rig job perk (reduce bank investment time by 1 hour for 3 job points):

Here you can see the new $m per day earned if you were to use all available job points, whilst in a 5-10* Oil Rig.

This is based on the 2b investment. You can also see the potential difference it makes per term too.

Considerable note: The opportune time where job points used match the remainder of the term almost perfectly are:
    • 30 day term - 27 days in (or 270 points) to save 90hrs/3.75 days
    • 60 day term - 53 days in (or 530 points) to save 176.7hrs/7.36 days
    • 90 day term - 79 days in (or 790 points) to save 263.3hrs/10.97 days

    5. Quickest return on investment calculations – TCI BB (10% additional bank interest):

Below you can see the earnings per day over 90 days and the ADDITIONAL interest earned per day due to the stock bonus respectively.

I suppose this could come in handy if you were rich enough. There are better alternatives to use your cash, but you can always sell up the stock too! Make sure you buy low, sell high and you wouldn’t lose out with this.

    6. TCI vs Caymans - when does Caymans finally pay more?

Below are the initial rates of earnings from Caymans. You can see how much you earn over 30, 60 and 90 days on a 3b investment. The second column of each shows you how much you'd need to have invested in Caymans to match the efficiency of the Torn Bank

    7. Using Duke's loan to gain interest?

Simply put, it's not worth it. Given the same bank rates as above.

Per 100m loaned, over 90 days...

The cost to you: 2.5% per week, including initial loan = 13 (rounded down) x $2.5m = $32.5m

The return to you: $20.5m (as per workings above)

The loss per 100m within 90 days: $12m

    8. 3* Oil Rig alternative extra: Embargo, using 50 job points to halve someone’s happiness:

Using the figures from the workings on the 5* Oil Rig perk. We can assume that 90 days will give us 900 job points and since you’re in a 10* Oil Rig now, then using this alternative your full term will actually be 90 days and you’re banking $3b.

The opportunity cost (what you’re missing out by not reducing your term length) = $97.02m

To make this alternative worth it, you need to make up $97.02m within 900 points, or 18 uses of Embargo. In essence, $5.39m per use will suffice. This is quite high to charge, since the general consensus is 3-5m per use.

Hypothetically however, if you’re only banking 2b then at worst (3*) you need to make up what ‘would’ be $64.68m over the 5 uses you’ll earn within 90 days (270 job points). Making this charge $12.9m, which is quite ridiculous.

Now the best case scenario, based on 2b and 10* point earnings, $64.68m over 18 uses gives a more fair $3.59m charge.

You can fairly assume that charging between $3.59m and $5.39m will make this alternative worth using.

You should really make a guide dealing with the cap amount (2b).

The APR in the bank fluctuates from day to day, so your figures are not helpful.

You have not addressed merit upgrades or stock block (TCB) in your guide.

Apart from that, I feel your guide is too "personalized" (to your exact situation - eg. amount banked, expenses) to be of much help.

Plus, two months is the most profitable for bank interest - not three months.

What I meant that that is that a player will be making money actively in the time when the investment is taking place meaning more money to add to the next investment.

If you're active and using the bank usually a 2 week rolling investment adding on your profit each time will yield more.

Obviously the more you are banking the more likely a 2 month investment will be the best.

If you're banking 1b you'd need to be topping up your bank with about 28m every 2 weeks to make a cycling 2 week investment better than a 2 month one.

Also the 2 week investment is also means you're money is never tied up for as long if you need it.

I do agree, it is quite personalized, however, today I answered a lot of questions I've had myself and that I'm sure others have too.

I just wanted to put this out there so others could see what I found and use it to help them with any decision making :P

I find this useful, for someone who doesn't really pay attention to the numbers too closely, this should help me figure out how I can squeeze a bit extra out of the bank. :)

    Meh!

    Yes, that’s right.

The remaining updates include fluctuating bank interest rates; their upper and lower limits and the average rate.
