INTRODUCTION
This guide aims to cover most of everything related to Search For Cash, the first crime in Torn's Crimes 2.0 Early Access.
If you already know the basics just skip ahead, I'll try and keep everything organized for clarity's sake.
If you're just looking for advice on this crime, skip to the "Points Of Interest" section..
This guide was revisited on December 5th, with the previous update being back in late July.
Old tables can be found at the bottom, mostly for rememberance's sake.

GLOSSARY:
CS = Crime Skill, your skill at doing the crime, shown at the top of the crime page.
Unique = Unique find, marked with a star under the "ATTEMPT" button, can only be found once.
Crit = Critical failure, leads to loss of CS and sometimes items, sometimes life, sometimes prison time.
SFC = Short form of "Search For Cash".
THE BASICS (Principles of crimes)
Given that this is the first crime one might run across, I'll add a brief introduction to crime mechanics before moving onto SFC proper.
While doing any crime in Crimes 2.0, you'll slowly gain Crime Skill (1), which as the name implies indicates how skilled you are at doing X crime. As it increases, new outcomes and unique finds will start showing up.
The chances of success are visible right away, in the form of colored bars on each subcrime (2). These vary over time, some by hours, others by days, and some like the beach and fountain, the whole month. This mechanic only applies to SFC, with other more advanced crimes having a different mechanic in this position, usually affecting success rates or possible outcomes as well.
Also, some crimes will also have additional requirements before they can be performed (3), usually items but as seen in bootlegging can also be education courses.
Finally, there's also unique finds on each crime, which will be marked with a star under the "ATTEMPT" button (4). A list of unique finds for each particular location and their requirements can be found further down.
FIRST STEPS (What you need to start)
There's a total of four items of interest related to the search for cash crime: The enhancer (glasses) and three key items required to unlock locations and new outcomes.
The Glasses are the enhancer for this crime, they increase CE&CS gains by 5%. They can be found by searching the subway and pickpocketing a businesswoman.
The Metal Detector is a key item in this crime required to access the Beach location. It can be found by searching the junkyard at skill level 30.
The Cemetery Key is a key (heh) item in this crime required to access the Cemetery. Other more advanced crimes may have additional outcomes if you have this. It can be found by searching the beach at skill level 50.
The Lost and Found Office Key, also known as the Office Key, is a key item in this crime that unlocks additional outcomes and at least one unique outcome in this crime. It can be found by searching the subway at skill level 85.
All key items can be obtained while performing this crime, so purchasing one is unnecessary for the most part.
THE LOCATIONS
SFC has six locations where one can look for riches. The values and usual finds vary significantly between each location, though it can't be said that one location is necessarily better than others.
Success rates for each location will vary according to date and time, with the exact conditions depending on each location.
SEARCHING THE TRASH
The first search location, hold no key items and the rewards are mostly useless bar some exceptions added at a later date.
The success rate cycle starts on monday 18:00TCT at 0%, and goes up linearly throughout the week, reaching its peak on the early hours of monday, right before 8:00TCT, after which it drops sharply to 0%, and the cycle begins anew.
86% of all searches will give you a meager sum of cash, while the other 14% will net you any of the items listed above, based on the shown percentage rate.
Some of these outcomes may be restricted to a particular skill level. This information is currently not determined.
Noteworthy finds are card skimmers and spray cans, both materials required for later crimes.
SEARCHING THE SUBWAY
Second search location and probably the most consistent. The success rate varies throughout the day according to the number of active players.
There's only one key item here: The Lost and Found Office Key, found in this location at CS85. Unlike other key items that unlock search locations, the office key unlocks new outcomes on the subway.
Just like searching the trash, searching the subway has a significantly higher chance to give money instead of item. Amongst said items, arguably the most important of them, billfolds, have a ~9% chance of being obtained.
SEARCHING THE JUNKYARD
Third location and possibly the best, given it's high rate of giving items instead of cash. There's one key item to be found here: The Metal Detector, required to access the beach later on. Success rates are the highest on sunday and monday morning, while being somewhat inconsistent the rest of the week.
The junkyard is interesting for two reasons: It's the location most likely to give you crime components, and it's the location where new components tend to be placed the most. Enhancers for new crimes or materials required for new crimes, back when they were new, would be added to the junkyard in an effort to increase availability. It's also the most recently modified location with the addition of computer parts.
Noteworthy finds are spray cans, card skimmers, spy cameras, rope, blank DVDs, computer parts and of course, enhancers and the metal detector, required to access the beach.
SEARCHING THE BEACH
Fourth location to search, requiring the Metal Detector to be unlocked. The items found here aren't anything out of this world, but the mechanism used for success rate is quite interesting. The tide varies, going from high periods to low periods both throughout the day and every day of the month.
(source: Chedburn)
The beach's finds are, for the most part, junk. Not only that, but it's also the location with the highest injury values and most likely to hospitalize new players.
Only noteworthy finds are the cemetery key, and stash boxes added at a later date. Update March 2024: Now you can also find sand here, which you'll need for Forgery and likely Arson, it can only be found on low tide and also gives you a merit when you get it.
SEARCHING THE CEMETERY
Fifth location, requiring the Cemetery Key to access, it's by far the most consistent of all locations, having a set success rate of 25% and 75% depending on time of day. From 9 to 5 during weekdays, groundskeeping will be active, unlocking some outcomes but reducing success rates drastically.
Most interesting finds are hit contracts and car keys, the former being a theorized crime component for assassination, while the latter being a theorized crime component for grand theft auto. There's also fertilizer and candles, both theorized to be used for future undetermined crimes.
For the most part, loot in this location is unremarkable, but it's consistency makes it a good location to tackle when success rates elsewhere are low.
SEARCHING THE FOUNTAIN
Sixth and final search location, unlocked at CS75. No key items here, nor are any needed to access. The success rate cycle is monthly, resetting to 0% the 1st of each month and slowly going up afterwards, peaking the 30th/31st of the month.
Loot in the fountain is... somewhat disappointing. Plenty of loot containers and spraycans, plus some consumables here and there. It's either safe or unsafe for very long periods of time, being the most consistent of all locations in that regard. It's high unlock level and low usefulness of loot make it a location only good for increasing skill level and acquiring green spray cans, and that's about it.
POINTS OF INTEREST
THE UNIQUES
34 uniques currently, and hopefully without any new additions in the future. Ranges for money outcomes may be lower/higher, these values are based on the dataset used and nothing else.
Trivia:
- Some of these were lowered, like bags of candy kisses being halved (8 => 4), speed getting reduced (8 => 3) and so on.
- Newest unique is the Mountain Bike from the junkyard, added on August 8th.
THE MERITS
This crime has three honor bars unique for it, and all attempts contribute to the Theft category of medals.
Reaching Crime Skill 100 will grant you the Pay Dirt honor bar.
Finding all seven rotten items will grant you the Spoiled Rotten honor bar.
These items are only found by searching the trash, and only items found will count towards this attempt, no point in buying or trading them. Last time I tested for this, the last two items were both exceedingly rare and CS-locked to CS45, so you'll just have to give it your best shot and hope for the best.
Finding Sand while searching the beach will grant you the Shore Thing honor bar.
Sand can only be found when searching the beach during low tide (70%+). You don't need anything to find it, but having a Bucket will increase your chances of finding it greatly. It's not a unique outcome so don't go looking for a star, it's a common outcome and you may need to spend up to 600 nerve before getting it.
Finally, all attempts at this crime are considered Theft crimes, making it the best for getting Theft medals in 2.0. However this shouldn't be a concern given that we have four theft crimes out as of December 5th.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The original guide made around July was difficult to make and had a sample size of 37,500 logs. It was a mostly manual effort using plaintext logs, which made it easier to track skill level but harder to organize and track the log sender amongst other things.
The drop tables were also a mess, centered around "item drop rate" rather than "outcome drop rate". They way it's done now makes me a lot happier, being more compact and true to the data collected. Sample size is also more than seven times the original, with a total of 262k logs.
DATA GATHERING
I normally request people to send me their logs in this section, however, there's no need for that this time 'round :P I do not think I'll make any further additions to this guide, besides eventually adding any CS-locks present for common outcomes.
Thanks to everyone who contributed their logs towards this project. I'd add your name in but it's too many people, so you'll just have to take my thanks for this one o7
CREDITS
Leaving the old credits here since it makes me feel a little giddy when reading it again. I was so innocent back then... Cheers to everyone who contributed their data to the re-making of this guide and all other guides made.
-------------------------------------------------------
Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who rated my previous guide, those that helped me make corrections and polish it, those who sent me their logs so I could make accurate assessments and show exact numbers, and most of all those that encouraged me to keep this series going. This has been the most fun I've had in torn in a long time, and I really enjoyed making this and the previous guide :)
And to finally say goodbye, a shoutout to everyone who contributed their logs in the name of science: SimbaJack, six31167, Prynce, masky, Cryheight, haohao229900, carrion, Jamie17694, real_mister and jdrr22.Last edited by Emforus on 23:43:45 - 31/07/26 (3 months ago)---------------------------------------------------------------

Also, searching the junkyard is generally very profitable, as you get gas cans which are about 275K each. I have got 9, and that's a free 2.5 milLast edited by Hemigenus on 06:13:40 - 23/07/23 (3 years ago)

Posted on 09:17:26 - 02/08/23 (3 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkThere seems to be another unique for the beach.
21:35:32 - 01/08/23 You used 2 nerve successfully searching the beach gaining 2x First Aid Kit (unique)
The flavour text was along the lines of - someone screaming shark, lifeguards rushes over, you check out their beach station and take the first aid kits, you hope they won't be needed. -

I'm not sure if this unique has been noted yet, but figured I'd bring it up as well. It somehow put me at 34/33 uniques.Last edited by Evan_Manus on 01:02:01 - 04/08/23 (3 years ago)Stay Greasy.

Posted on 15:35:07 - 13/08/23 (3 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkSo far there's not a single report of losing key items from SFC. Check the special items category in your inventory, if it's not there you might've sent it to someone or sold it.
If you're certain you did neither of those things, then I have no clue.---------------------------------------------------------------
