In a world of magic there are skeptics. In a world logic there are mystics. In a world of both there is balance. But in a world of balance lies the chaos laced into every redundant absence. But chaos isn’t a dark, evil, thing and order isn’t always good. It lies solely in the context of the moment. And who’s there to interact with it.

long ago, Innovation was born in twins, Logic and Magic. When the primordial races of the world were brought about they held within them the same aptitude of progress. When fire was discovered, it was found by scraping rocks together the same time it was found in the souls of those who would harness it. When civilization began it was grounded both in intelligence and wisdom. For every development in one side there was a counterpart in the other. They were often used to augment or support each other rather than opposition. But of course there were purists about the world. And with the glitz and glamour of the impossibilities being brought about there is darkness and danger to be seen all the same.

this is where you come in. Come into what? You’re not sure. But as you find yourself in the technomagical city of Neo-Disk, you imagine something is about to happen. Something that you will undoubtedly be a piece of.

The city of Neo-Disk is one of immense possibilities. Law enforcement is effective but not difficult to get around and you never know where you’ll end up, Or what you see, or if you were ever supposed to see it. The whole city crackles with technology and magic. The thrum of the systems in tune with the heartbeat of the very universe. Listen close and you can hear a whisper. Maybe about current events, maybe about what’s behind the scenes, maybe something you didn’t know about yourself, or maybe nothing at all. It’s not clear who runs the city since there are so many people with influence. The charismatic Mayor Quinn, one of the only actually honest politicians in the game. The brutal crime boss who most know as The Baron, a brutal and skilled man who see’s his job as an intricate game and always stays true to his promises… and his threats. And seemingly well meaning family that’s smiles are of silicon, soft, warm, inviting, and never quite reaching their eyes. Many others are vying for control but these are the main players. Now who are you?

    Name: Cyriel Hengest
    Race: Human (Shadowborn)

    Age: 17

    Gender: Male

    Allegiance: Unknown

    Preferred Magic: Shadow Manipulation

    Preferred Weapons: Shade-Eaters (Twin Swords)

Description: Cyriel stands at 6' 3", with pale skin, silver hair and eyes, and a slim but muscular body. His typical outfit consists of a black sleeveless open-chested shirt and baggy black pants, covered by a large cloak, with black steel-toed boots that add a good inch or two of height.
Backstory: Born into the prestigious Hengest bloodline, Cyriel was trained in various fighting styles, eventually being given the Shade-Eaters, twin swords with a mysterious ability. However, at age 13 he unlocked the rare ability of shadow manipulation after seeing his family massacred, killing the perpetrator in a blind rage and unknowingly absorbing his spirit, gaining the ability to manipulate fire in spite of his inability to produce magic of his own.

I wandered through the city, seeing all the people around me enjoying themselves. While nobody had anything against me, I was still alone. I walked into a tavern, sitting down to get myself some food and a drink or two to clear my mind.

The sound of jazz hits you as you enter the bar. the ambient sound of the singer on stage paired with the warm contrast to the unheated outside gives the place a feeling of liminal sanctuary, like watching the rain from under an awning outside a store front. The bartender takes note of your arrival but doesn’t entirely acknowledge you until you begin ordering. You notice in a booth a few down from yours is a shadowed figure wearing a cloak. You can’t quite tell what his movements look like but it seems he keeps glancing at a phone nervously, as if expecting something. Meanwhile, across the room is a fancifully but eccentrically dressed goblinoid who is sitting close to the the stage and grinning at the singer, they appear to be friends. Finally, the bartender seems to have a moment of rest if you wanted to try talking to her. Or you could always find your own thing to occupy your attention.

As I noticed the bartender, I called her over to my booth, both to order and strike up a conversation. "Name's Cyriel. You got any wine in stock? Sweeter varieties, preferably." I took some money from my bag, placing it on the table for her. "Once you're done, come sit. I can tell you're exhausted." I then removed my my cloak, folding it neatly next to me.

“Oh, thank you” she says, grateful and slightly surprised by your kindness. She returns with a glass of umeshu and what looks to be a glass of wicker brew, a drink known for being rather strong as well as being imported into the city through illegal means. “Today’s been especially rough, something to do with a successful heist.” She explains, looking at some of the better dressed yet thuggish patrons. “At least the Baron’s boys are good tippers.” She laughs at her own joke. Something tells you that most of the Baron’s underlings aren’t exactly well mannered. They don’t seem to be causing any trouble though… yet.

“They may be good tippers, but they’re pricks.” I took a sip of the wicker, looking at the woman sitting across from me. “You know, I’ve been alone for years. Family was massacred when I was 13, and now I’m the last one remaining in the Hengest bloodline. Killed the bastard who did it, but I don’t remember anything.”

She was not entirely ready for that but having an open ear is part of her job. “Well… I guess alls fair in love and war.” She says before taking a sip of her drink. it seems she can hold her liquor well to have the confidence to drink a Wicker Brew in the middle of a shift. “If you’re still in the murder business you could talk to that guy.” She says pointing you to the eccentric goblinoid who is now offering the singer some of whatever is in the table bottle as she’s just finished a song. “He’s always got work he’d have someone else do. And according to people who worked with him in the past he ain’t very frugal.”

“I’m not looking to murder for money. I’m looking to find out who the hell had my family killed. I’m assuming you know how important the family was, right? Well…you just met the last member in person. I honestly just want someone to think about my mental state for once, to empathize with me. I don’t know if that’s your thing, but if I wasn’t going through anything currently, I wouldn’t be drinking a Wicker Brew with you.” I looked straight into the woman’s eyes, expressionless. However, my eyes showed nothing but anguish and a need for love and connection after not having such things for four years straight.

This wasn’t anything new for her but it was made easier for her since you are literally saying what she should do. “Well… I personally don’t know a lot but I know people who do and I know if you talked to one of the Baron’s thugs they probably know things too. I know it’s not a lot but it’s a start, right?” She gives this information freely hopes you can utilize it effectively. She notices that some more patrons entered and starts getting. “I gotta get back to work, my name is Lilac if you’re ever back here.” She says. She takes a few steps before turning back as though forgetting something. “Oh, and by the way” she puts the money you gave her back on the table “it’s on the house, sugar.” With that she gets back to work.

As I saw her leave, I nodded silently, confirming that I’d be back soon. I then downed the rest of the Wicker Brew, taking my money back and leaving some contact information on the table for her.

I walked out, waving to her before turning and going out to let off some steam. Walking into the forest, I began to cut various branches surrounding me, before noticing something. Fire. But this wasn’t normal fire. It was pitch black, and it seemed to jump out from my shadow.

It didn’t leave your shadow, merely spilled out of it a little. It crawled about your shadow slightly and spread within its lines. You noticed as it began to grow closer it was cold. Where you would feel heat from it you instead detected a chill. Not only that, but seemed to obscure light the same way light would the darkness. You wave your arm and see that it follows along the ground, as if it sat in your shadows hand instead of yours.

As the flames flickered around me, I noticed another shadow near me. Instinctively, I whipped my head around, seeing a man with his hands on his hips, reaching for what seemed to be a pair of shortswords. I drew my own swords, parrying as he attacked me. "Who the hell sent you here!?" My heart was racing, as I had almost let the man kill me, and I was unprepared to fight him on my own.

In the reflexive movement you swing at him and, to your surprise, the fire moves in kind. With a roar far more muted than one would expect it leaps up and engulfs much of the man. As he stagers back his burns look more like pitch black wads of spider webs on his skin. He writhes and screams as though being branded by the coldest of cold.

new mystic blood technique unlocked: shadowflame.

you notice that despite this he is still standing, though clearly bewildered. It seems this new ability is not as effective as one would hope. But, like all forms of innovation, it can be cultivated.

As I watched the man writhe in agony, I lost control over my body. In that moment, however, something inside my mind clicked, and I remembered that night. The bodies. The stench of blood. The fire spreading across the ground and engulfing the house and everything inside. And then it happened. A black aura slowly rose from the body, ripping itself away right as the man's eyes stopped blinking, right as the pulse of his heart stopped. Then, his eyes went completely white.

As the man in front of me went in for another attack, black flames engulfed my body and the Shade-Eaters, and my hands seemed to move on their own. However, before I could strike, I saw a blue flash of electricity, and in that moment, I felt a kick to the back of my neck, sending me flying into a tree as blue light began to flicker.

You hear an energetic cackling as you rise to your feet. When your eyes level they see a young woman grinning unstably, engulfed in an aura of electricity. “You really thought you could just talk like that in the open and not expect to attract attention?” She asks rhetorically, clearly mocking your decision. Her voice is layered by the energetic thrum of her powers. “And then you thought he was who they sent after you!” She cackles again with amusement, it sounds like the laughter of madwoman mixed with a short-circuiting breaker box. “You’ll be easy money~”

"Shit...two of them now...?" I pushed myself away from the tree, my upper body falling forward as I steadied myself, blood dripping from the side of my head. Rushing forward, I slashed at the two, missing the woman but slashing the man through the side of the abdomen. I looked at the two, my veins having turned pitch black, as I had tapped into my power.

I saw the shadow of the man cross over mine, and I raised two fingers, stopping him right where he stood. Then, I walked towards him, kicking him in the stomach to bring him to his knees before gripping his chin and coldly staring into his eyes. "Why are you here, you sick little bastard? Are you so weak that you had to bring backup?" I then brought my swords down on him, slitting his throat open and near-instantaneously killing him.

“So you’ve got the spirit~” the woman chuckles from behind you, a little impressed by how easily you took out the first man. “But the skills?…” she leaves it open ended as if expecting you to answer. Before you even can answer she flashes towards you and delivers another attack. You manage to block it but it still blows you back. Then she comes at you again, and again, and again. It’s getting harder to keep up and it’s clear this won’t be as easy as the man. If you don’t do something soon she’ll get another hit off on you.
