The Bathhouse on the Border is a location based story for the most part, and yet there are general concepts - and that's why I name the chapters. It gives a container to play in. It ends up we like some structure. We want our freedom but we also want to know what is expected of us so we can do it well.

The Starship Zeta by Strange and I is our latest, and we actually cast people in certain roles ahead of time because it's not only location based but also ideology and technology based - all on Star Trek the original and TNG. So particular roles are expected to hang the story on. It's a known and predictable format we're going for. This one also has episode titles. The general idea of a story, but the middle is missing. 


Generally, we know where we began, we know where we want to end - but how we get there is up to the characters playing their roles IN the puzzles and/or situations created for writers. The Narration posts are in the Zeta to give everyone a heads up that something has been solved and things are moving forward. to the next thing. 

We're at the end here, the final part of the story in the Zeta, and it should be wrapping up in a few days. (in theory - you can't control people's schedules or desire to write)

A good time span for an episode seems to be about 3 weeks real time, with a week long break between. That gives time for writers to have spun up, gotten into their characters, spent some time in them and gotten comfortable, and then they're ready for a new thing.

(Edit for addition) Oh! One important thing I left out - I'm often talking to people in direct messages as the RP continues, getting feedback and answering questions and making suggestions. It's not all done in silence, or all done at once! It's a collaboration :)

There have been quite a few things I’ve read where one of the main characters becomes an antagonist near the end.

I mean, THE main character, as in Tanjiro Kamado being possessed by the Demon King's will and consciousness

Plenty of novels and movies end with the protagonist dying, and a few end with the protagonist becoming the villain. What you have to do is lay the groundwork for that. When writing a novel or movie, where one person has executive story control, this can be fairly easy. However, the nature of RPs is that many people provide input and story direction. That makes it challenging to have the full control you want and to create a believable scenario where the MC becomes evil or dies. Just because so many other people might have laid the groundwork for your character NOT dying or becoming evil.

That's this writer/film critic's two cents anyway.

The other issue with that is that in a group RP every writer taking part IS, in a way, the main character of the story they're helping to write - especially if roles haven't been laid out ahead of time. Live collaboration can't be the same thing as a planned out novel or script, by the nature of how it works.

The story, the momentum forward, goes where the action and interesting thing is, so the writer's characters often step in and out of the limelight several different times as things progress. We each get to do our own little solo riffs and then hand it off, and hopefully we make beautiful music together but sometimes - especially without a conductor - we just sprawl and end up off in the bushes somewhere.

Often with live collabs, the most inspired person is the one to take the lead role - whoever that happens to be at a given time.

The fact that I wrote something in a very old thread, continuing the story of a burglar who is surviving the zombie world. He is like my second main character that I created and I am quite attached to that character.

Yeah, I feel that way about Kira from Knights of Necromancy that's back on like page 7 now...my first Torn RP character from 2-3 years ago. 

I didn't try to resurrect her in that thread though since the original poster left the game. I brought her back for a bit in Woods when DCDark asked me why I hadn't RP'd in a long time :)
