The continent of Glacia is home to three major kingdoms, Xicel, Clein, and Rytela. You hail from Xicel, a kingdom in the northern region of the valley-prairies. The tall orange grasses here seem no more odd than the dragons soaring about like hawks.

The dragons here are between 12 foot and 26 foot when fully grown. Clein, the kingdom in the far south, has begun utilizing the native dragons to attack with unrelenting ferocity. Xicel and Rytela have formed the North-West Pact. Rytela will send their troops while Xicel will provide riders for the first time to rise to face this new threat. You have four days until the eggs hatch. Prove your worth to be a dragon rider.

While Rytela prepares to ward off Clein in the west, we must prepare you over the next 4 days. The Castle Xicel stands tall with the Waning Mountains as the backdrop. You pass through the bazaar on your way to the castle gates.

Once inside the grand castle, you shall notice the eggs... or rather, the lack of eggs. They will be kept hidden away until the time comes for them to hatch.

Now, your testing shall begin. First, state your name.

    Bronwyn, age 23, female

She's always been a bit of a tomboy. She was in the middle of milking one of their old dairy cows when the rider passed by her family's homestead, yelling at the top of his lungs. "All able bodied young adults are requested at the castle. Find out if you have what it takes to be a dragon rider!"

She picked up her pail, dropped it off with her mother inside and said, "I'm going to the castle. I'm going to be a dragon rider. Byeeee!" With that she ran out the door. Her mother called after her, "Just be sure you're back in time for supper!"

As she stood on the flagstones of the main courtyard with all the other dragon rider hopefuls, it finally settled in - she was here. She would become a rider, no matter what it took.

    Kismet, 33, Female
    Only child/orphan
    Unmarried/childless
    Motto: "Fate is Unavoidable"

Kismet is tall, lanky, and very pale, with dark black eyes and hair. She has some experience in dragon riding, recreationally, as a child. Before her parents died, her father would occasionally take her on moonlit rides around the outskirts of Xicel. When she heard the call for Dragon Riders, she felt she had nothing to lose, and thought it would finally give some purpose to her existence.

"Is this all?" asked the Lieutenant, looking out across the small crowd of nearly seventy people. "Very well. Follow me," he said, turning abruptly and walking briskly down the smooth stone corridor, his two guards in tow.

The walk was a short one, as they reached the first area, just outside the inner castle wall. Before you is a large open prairie, roughly half a mile across. You're standing at the top of a rather steep hill, and at the other end is another hill, but this one is steeper. The Lieutenant turned to face the crowd once more. "This is the first test. The first forty to reach the other hill will stay. The rest will return to their homes with a small bag of silver for your troubles. Once you reach the other side, form a crowd by the guardsmen over there," he explained, pointing to four guardsmen waiting atop the other hill. "Now, begin!" he shouted, walking to the side to allow the Trial Runners through.

Kismet expected some fitness tests and obstacle courses, but not immediately upon arrival. She was dressed casually, but in flat sandals, not running shoes. Yet, as soon as the Lieutenant had finished giving directions and said "Now, begin!" she was off like a bolt! Her long legs and lean body gave her an advantage over some who had show up. She hurled herself forward as if being chased by an ill-tempered dragon herself. About two-thirds off the way there, the strap on her right sandal broke, causing her to trip out of her shoe. She stumbled, cursed, and grabbed it. Stripping off the left shoe, she continued, barefoot. The terrain was rugged, and occasionally she landed on a rock or stone that dug into her sole. Nearing the steeper hill, she was determined to be one of the 40 at the top. Pushing herself harder, she clawed, ran, and scraped her way past other competitors until finally, dirty and exhausted, she had scaled the mount. She huffed and puffed and felt a tear run down her cheek.

One of the guardsmen put his hand on Kismet's back and directed her to one of the others. "This will be your officer until you either pass the Trials, or are sent home," stated the guard in a calm, even voice.

Composing herself, Kismet stood up straight when addressed by the guard. "Yes sir," she responded to his direction. Her feet were sore, but she tried not to let the pain show on her face. She walked over to the other officer and stood among other designees for that section, waiting further command.

Bronwyn coughed behind the guardsman that had put his hand on Kismet's back, and tapped him on the shoulder letting him know she was also here. Who knows for how long? She wasn't nearly as out of breath or worn out as the others, many of whom stood bent over with their hands on their knees just trying to get their breath back. The rest were still struggling up the hill.

Tomboy that she was, she'd grown up in these parts. She knew the hills like the back of her hand. It was hard to not just take off like a shot from an arrow, straight at the problem of the hill as soon as the others started doing that. But she knew the other side of the higher hill the far soldier's were standing on had a nice stone stair made of tumbled boulders in the back.

So, instead of running with the group, she ran around them as fast as any of them but on a different route. Instead of taking the long way, she went where she knew it would be easier to navigate and, in her rugged boots, did just that. She climbed the tumbled boulders, as fleet of foot as she was sure of the terrain.

"No problem," she chirped easily, putting her hands behind her back and leaning to the side to grin and wink at Kismet from around the guard. Her brown pigtails, tied up in braids, fell across her shoulders as she did so. She raised one hand to the other girl and made a V for victory sign at her. Would they be best friends? Or bitter rivals...

The guard turned to Bronwyn. "Thirteenth," he muttered, motioning to the guard to Bronwyn's left. "Swinta will be your officer until either you pass the Trials, or are sent home." The guard turned his attention to the next arrival.

Now 24 have arrived. Rhimule has 8, Swinta has 8, and Dioa has 8 (Bronwyn is with Swinta and Kismet is with Dioa). Only 16 more will be accepted... and they're fighting their way up the hill now.

Bronwyn scowled at the guard's back...his lack of perceptiveness had put her way behind Kismet in the running. Her hands clenched into fists as she muttered darkly under her breath and took her place next to Swinta.

Kismet stood, watching the others race and rank. A younger girl waved to her, apparently not even breaking a sweat. But how? Kismet gave a small wave and a nod back. She was assigned to a different officer, but the lines stood parallel. Some fellow was arguing with one of the guardsmen about being 'cheated' from the top 5. Kismet only heard bits and pieces, but apparently the guard wasn't having it, and threatened to disqualify him entirely if he kept on ranting. Looking around at the groups assembled, they were quite a diverse bunch. Most appeared younger than she, but that was fine by her.

Everyone had reached the top of the hill now. The Lieutenant stalked briskly past the four officers, each taking note of their ten Trial Runners, and addressed the thirty Runners who had not passed the first Trial. "Here is your silver," he started, holding up a small pouch of silver. "Two pounds each. Once you have received yours, take your leave. Return to your homes. That is all," he said. One of the Lieutenant's guards started passing the pouches out and seeing the unsuccessful Trial Runners on their ways.

"Now, for the remaining forty of you," he paused, looking at the four officers. Each nodded. "Tonight, we feast, in the light of your success. Your next test will begin tomorrow. Quintly, lead your Runners to their quarters. Rhimule, do the same. Swinta, Dioa, same for you." Once he had finished, the Lieutenant walked back towards the Castle Xicel, accompanied by his guards. Quintly started marching his line to the entryway they had entered the prairie through. Once that group had reached the base of the hill opposite of the three remaining lines, Rhimule started off. The process repeated with Swinta and Dioa.

"Excuse me, Officer Dioa?" Kismet approached her team's lead once they arrived at their quarters. "I was unprepared today with appropriate attire." She held up her broken sandal. "Is it possible to request replacement shoes? Or am I able to take a short leave to return home and pack more supplies before tomorrow's trials?" She felt embarrassed in asking and didn't want to jeopardize her opportunity. But she knew she couldn't compete barefoot through the entirety of the contest.

The tall man looked at Kismet. "A request may be placed, yes, but, however, if you are to fail the Trials, the cost to replace your sandals will be taken from your silver," said Dioa in a stern, flat voice. It wasn't unfriendly in tone, just more professional than most are used to.

Dioa's clan scattered about the stone quarters where they'd be staying for the night. The bunks were built as part of the walls, with stone structuring directly connected to the walls on either side of the chamber. All four clans were in the same type of bunk chambers. These chambers were normally used for infantrymen. These were odd circumstances, however, as Xicel was at war, and with a greater threat than ever before. Only during the Siege of Dragons had Xicel's people ever been attacked by dragons. Even then, the threat was less grave than now, for, now, the threat wasn't only dragons, but dragon riders as well.

"Time and time, we stare death in the face, la di da di da..."
Seconds ticked by on a clock in a small house. The fireplace crackled, happily burning away the wood put inside of it.
"And every time, death backs down, la di doo da dae..."
The lights were occasionally flickering on, leaving the majority of the room in a shroud of darkness. The fire illuminated the man's face, revealing pale skin and short, black hair with stubble growing.
"Oh, what do we say to the Lord of Death, to Death what do we say?"

Sitting on a chair infront on the fire was a young man of 20 years old. They wore a black shirt with a red waistcoat, alongside a pair of gloves commonly used by archers, complete with fingers covering the index and middle finger, and the thumb, leaving the ring and pinky fingers exposed. A hooded white trench coat was on the back of the chair, and the man wore a pair of black pants that had seen better days. Coupled with a pair of laced boots, he wore the outfit of someone who seemed too refined to be living this way.

"Not today, good sir, not today." They said, their song done.

Bronwyn went immediately for a top bunk. She climbed up the short ladder, hopped in and lay down, all but hidden up there as she surveyed the other recruits as they filed in. She realized that most of them were men, some younger, and some older than she, but not a single other woman was in evidence. She guessed Kismet was experiencing the same thing, wherever she was...

Some of the people she recognized, most she did not. Considering she'd spent the majority of her time on the farm, that wasn't surprising, but she'd hoped to have at least one person to share this experience with.

She suddenly found herself coming eye to eye with a very tall, broad shouldered man who had come over to lay claim to the upper bunk she was hiding in. "Taken!" she chirped with a grin, then looped her arm down to point at the bunk beneath hers. "That one's still open, though!"

The man grunted, sat down where she'd indicated, and stowed his pack beneath the bed with an ungraceful kick. It was only then that Bronwyn realized she hadn't brought anything. Not even a change of clothes - she'd just rushed out, barely even saying goodbye to her ma... Well, she was here. That's what mattered.

Swinta oversaw his clan as each of them claimed a bunk. He stood silently, with his hands clasped behind his back. Almost everyone was settled.

Quintly's clan of Runners were slightly more chaotic, but eventually settled down. Meanwhile, Rhimule's clan took to the bunks like magnets. Each informed their group that the feast would begin in three-quarter hour.

Jace heard a knock come from his door. He sighed, putting on the hooded trench coat hanging off the chair. He buttoned it up, pulled up the hood and moved towards the door.
At first, the door stuck, but after a few tugs, he managed to open it.

Kismet laid in her bunk reflecting on the events of the day. Twelfth place, not too shabby. She was neither arrogant, nor humble, about her performance. She always knew she could do better. Without any kin to cheer her on, she had to be her own cheerleader. Others in the camp were still chattering about the race, and speculating about what was still to come. She merely wanted to get a sound sleep and be prepared for tomorrow with her new running shoes, thanks to Officer Dioa.
