I have made one of these mug bots, it tracks over 5000 bazaars simulatenously, a 30 second bazaar cache wont affect its operation at all as it takes 1 - 2 minutes to update all of them.

Warwinds has very valid points not sure why most are alienating him or distorting what he says :p

This is a good change but agreed we should go further

An alert for a bazaar sales takes lots of skill out of mugging and benefits laziness, imo should be removed

Naturally people who are benefited by mug scripts or that are in favour of scripts in general will visit this thread more than the average torn player that plays on a huge disadvantage without such scripts, either by getting mugged or trying to mug without scripts, dont think the general torn population wants these kind of alert to exist at all

Except it's not an alert for "bazaar sales" specifically as you two seem to be thinking.

All it does is take bazaar value from point A and compare it to bazaar value from point B. Was there a sudden drop in value? Safe to assume that an item was sold and the player may have cash on hand.

There's a lot of other scripts that utilize the bazaar API which are wholly unrelated to mugging. Removing the section entirely would have a lot of breaking changes on various tools that are essential to some players such as myself. The change they made is definitely for the better and the only people it harms are bot-muggers, so I'm not sure what there is to complain about.

Can u guys move the discussion to gd or somewhere else please? This thread is for api changes and it makes hard to find the actual changes when there's a whole discussion in it.

Well they are not criticising it, they arguing inbetween and not helping to get things better, half of them defends something, other half says the otherwise so yeah, move it to the freaking gd.

What is your solution to going a step further? Removing bazaar API calls isn't an option. You're killing functionality in Yata, Tornstats, tornPDA, torn.report, and many other bots, financial reporting scripts, spreadsheets etc.

Y'all are whining about API this API that but aren't even discussing scrapers. Which are stronger than  the API, legally you can sit on a bazaar page with a script that adds up all of the value and spam F5.

The use of scripts, extensions, applications or any other kind of software is allowed only if it uses data from our API or a page you have loaded manually and are currently viewing.

    Untouchable [1360035]

That’s where you’re wrong, API bots are infinitely worse than scrapers because you can only scrape one page at a time.

if I collect a key from everyone in my faction, I can have a bot that pings for 10K+ bazaars and checks every 5 minutes, that is fundamentally broken and if you don’t agree, you’re being selfish.

there is absolutely no need for such tools to exist, and you can’t convince me otherwise. Speaking as someone who has profited massively from them, and could continue to do so, I think they’re broken and make the game less fun.

scrapers require you to be at your device refreshing, I can be in the gym, taking a shit, or doing literally anything, get a long on my phone that takes me to an attack loader and mug someone in seconds with plunder, then go about my merry way. It’s dumb

well that's not entirely true, a real scraper can work even with your browser closed.

But if I remember correctly ched decided to implement API to get rid of the scrapers (they were overloading the old infrastructure or something similar).

I do agree with most of what you said though, best and simplest solution would be to put most stuff under limited api, so you can just see your own stuff and just some info about others (some API are ofc fine to be public, like the list of items, companies, some part about factions).

This should leave most QoL available, while limiting most of what is ruining the skill and effort part of the game

Yes, technically it can run with your browser closed but that’s illegal, and you’ll get caught. I’m talking specifically about legal scrapers which you have to have opened the page manually.

    Freshmentality [2954019]

Can u guys move the discussion to gd or somewhere else please? This thread is for api changes and it makes hard to find the actual changes when there's a whole discussion in it.

These discussions are really beneficial - they help to better understand what community does, needs and wants. So really, I don't mind when they happen. Some people bring very good points and I'm thankful for their opinions (regardless if they agree or disagree with the change).

However, you do have a point - it is increasingly harder for others to find the latest news.
I'm always pinning the latest changes to the thread, but I've now also added a list of recent API changes to the original post to make things a little bit easier.

    Hopefully that helps a bit!

Thanks this is so helpful! Appreciate the work and effort you’re putting in!

I agree with the part of comments helping the future developments, it just seems like its getting out of the hands at some point and turning into meaningless fights, but again, thanks a lot.

    Hello,

Due to concerns of unfair advantages being gained through mug scripts as well as complaints from players worried about their API keys being linked (please note that this is an unfounded complaint, but was worth addressing), we have added a global 30-second cache to the 'user' -> 'bazaar' section in API v1.
This change applies to all requests, regardless of which query parameters are sent or which API keys are used.

We hope this change will provide better experience and enhanced gameplay for everyone.

For those who might attempt to bypass this change by scraping data, please ensure you do not violate the rules, especially those regarding page scraping:
    https://www.torn.com/rules.php

    Thanks.

This shows you don't understand the mechanic at all

30 second delay on a per-minute API call does nothing most of the time.

This isn't a solution, it's an excuse to pretend you "solved" the issue.

Turn off public bazaar API or set the delay to 30 minutes at the very least.

It's bogie's torn, we just live in it

What on earth are you on about? You are the one who doesn't understand mechanics. Per minute call? Mug bots check bazaars every 10-30 seconds (i know some do even sub 10 seconds). This change makes it so buymuggers and people manually refreshing the page will now notice the sale faster than the bots most of the time. It basically gives people mugging manually up to a 30 second window before the bots can ping the sale. Most of the sales mug bots will be catching now are the ones that have already been missed by people mugging manually, which does not affect the anti-bot muggers since they wouldn't catch those anyway.

Toolbox - a collection of my tools and spreadsheets made for Torn.

Guidebook - a collection of guides i made for Torn.

If people are lazy to be online when they sell shit, then they better sell in hosp.

If people cant come online to safekeep their cash before their hospital time ends, they better not sell through bazaar and should instead go to traders or auction (for rw stuff).

You want to completely destroy a method of mugging because the seller is lazy? Wtf seriously? The delay itself should've never been implemented in the first place.

You want to completely destroy a method of mugging because the seller is lazy? Wtf seriously? The delay itself should've never been implemented in the first place.

This change isn't about traders being "lazy".

If someone is not careful enough about how they handle money while they're doing bazaar sales, they should definitely be punished for that, there's plenty of ways to store money safely.

But the punishment needs to come from players actually playing the game, those checking the markets or a few selected targets actively, and not from someone driving a car and clicking a link on a Discord bot seconds after a sale.

Personally, I'm hoping with this change traders will become more relaxed and as a result will make more mistakes that actual muggers will be able to benefit from.

This shows you don't understand the mechanic at all

30 second delay on a per-minute API call does nothing most of the time.

This isn't a solution, it's an excuse to pretend you "solved" the issue.

Turn off public bazaar API or set the delay to 30 minutes at the very least.

I hope for this too, ever since everything became automated it’s a requirement to self hosp because you’re gonna get mugged, especially as a younger player with less stats. It’s not if but when, at least now there’s a /chance/ people will relax.

i hate how automated this game has become. I fully support any change that makes it harder to automate any form of gameplay that interacts with other players

I completely agree with your viewpoint. What I do disagree with is the fact that this delay has only been placed on bazaars. why?

Isn't your exact argument true for people putting players on stakeouts and getting notified through said pings to come online and hosp them/ mug them or whatever? or even in wars people using bots to be alerted soon as a player meds out? Shouldn't people actually stalking the war page be rewarded then?

I don't mind the 30 second delay being put into place if this 30 second delay was for every single datapoint on API and not just bazaars.

don't get me wrong. I am not a fan of this 30 second delay. I wouldn't want the delay anywhere tbf. but it is not fair to put the delay in one place and not others.

This is yet another "lazy" fix by the dev team and we have seen a lot of those recently.
