Just like real life, Torn's stock market is just gambling for rich people. But how can you use it to make money?
There are two ways to make money on the TSE (Torn Stock Exchange): From stock value and from stock dividends. Before we get to making money, there are merits you can get from participating in the stock market:

Moneybags: Invest $100,000,000 in the stock market
Stock Analyst: Achieve excellent success in the stock market

If you just want to know what stocks to buy for dividends scroll to the bottom.

Making money off of stock value:
Stocks are basically items or commodities. With the current system you can buy and sell them instantly, though Ched does charge a 0.1% handling fee for all sales starting 4/20/21 (20.4.21). Making money off of stocks is simple: Buy low, sell high. Buying and selling is easy in the current system since the TSE instantly buys and sells stock from and to you at the current valuation. The hard part is predicting whether stock value will go up or down. Ched does expect the value of the stocks to go up by 10% each year, but makes no guarantees because of the potentially volatile nature of stocks. In this system, you don't just have to look at long term trends because the instant buying and selling make day trading possible. By taking advantages of the minute-by-minute price updates, you can attempt to capitalize on the daily swings and falls.

Ched has said that TSE stock value movements are based on real world stocks in the same industries. Currently, we don't know what this means. There are theories of what real world stocks relate to which TSE stock and how these stocks influence the movements. It could be direct correlation or there could be some type of random scaling. There are also theories of how in-game actions affect these movements. Some say that in-game purchases of stocks will cause downwards movements of price and sales of stocks will cause upward movements of price.

If you don't care about predicting and just want to invest and sell based on your gut, the graphs and trends, make sure that you only sell your stocks when the stock value has increased by at least 0.1% otherwise you lose money due to the handling fees.

Not only can you earn money this way you can also earn merits too, and not just for earning money but losing it too:

City Slicker: Make a profit of $10,000,000 in a single Stock Market sale
Tendies: Make a profit of $100,000,000 in a single Stock Market sale
Diamond Hands: Make a profit of $1,000,000,000 in a single Stock Market sale
Bullish: Achieve $1,000,000,000 in total profits in the stock market

Stonks: Make a loss of $100,000,000 in a single Stock Market sale
Bearish: Achieve $1,000,000,000 in total losses in the stock market

(Looks like someone on the staff is on r/wsb)

Making money off of the stock dividends:
All of the stocks give dividends. Dividends are benefits that you get for owning a certain number of shares in a stock. At the TSE, there are two (2) types of dividends: active and passive. I'll go over both categories separately. But first the merits you can earn from dividends:

    Dividend: Receive 100 stock payouts
Monopoly: Own every stock benefit and dividend at the same time

    Passive Dividends:
For stocks with passive dividends, you get access to a perk if you own more than a minimum number of shares for at least seven (7) days. The outer ring of seven (7) arcs is a timer with the unlit arcs representing days till the perk activates. This timer will tick around midnight (00:00:00-00:20:00 TCT) everyday. You will also receive an event when the perk is activated. Unfortunately, some of the dividend perks are worthless meaning those stocks are only for playing the stock market. Below is a list of all stocks with passive dividends including the minimum number of shares to get the perk, the details of the perks and my thoughts on each one.

    Torn City Investments
    • 1,500,000 shares for perk
    • 10% Bank Interest Bonus
    • For optimal return invest 10/10 banking merits. Returns ~425k/wk for three (3) month investments of 2b with 10/10 banking merits. Also, you only need to own this dividend at for the seven (7) days before each investment period so it is possible to get the same benefits while only holding the stock for the last seven (7) days of each three (3) month period, but this will cost 0.2% of the stocks value each buy/sell cycle.
    Wind Lines Travel
    • 9,000,000 shares for perk
    • Private Jet Access - Free flights and flights take 50% less time than standard or 28.6% less time than airstrip (PI)
    • Most already rent a PI and by time you can get the dividend, you will own one so the only real benefit of the private jet will be faster travel which translates to a maximum of 40% increased profits for runners and energy loss-free travel to everywhere.
    Syscore MFG
    • 3,000,000 shares for perk
    • Advanced Firewall - Protects your company from the Intricate Hack Company Special and yourself from the Proxy Hack and IP Tracing Company Specials
    • Mostly useful for company directors, and very helpful if you keep a lot of money in the company bank. Maybe useful to people who bounty anonymously a lot.
    International School TC
    • 100,000 shares for perk
    • Free Education
    • Education courses are so cheap, this dividend is almost entirely useless. Use to play the market.
    Torn City Motors
    • 1,000,000 shares for perk
    • 10% Racing Skill Boost
    • Great for if you are into racing and can help with getting the racing merits
    TC Media Productions
    • 1,000,000 shares for perk
    • Company Sales Boost - 10% increase in company profits
    • Important for company directors
    Empty Lunchbox Traders
    • 5,000,000 shares for perk
    • 10% Home Upgrade Discount
    • Vital for property flippers
    Messaging Inc.
    • 300,000 shares for perk
    • Free Classified Advertising
    • Few people actual use classified ads (costs $250k per) and opt instead for forums, trade chat or direct marketing. Use to play the market.
    I Industries Ltd.
    • 1,000,000 shares for perk
    • 50% Coding Time Reduction
    • Only really useful for the 100 virus merit since viruses aren't 'used up'. Use to play the market.
    Tell Group Plc.
    • 2,500,000 shares for perk
    • Company Advertising Boost
    • Important for company directors
    West Side University
    • 1,000,000 shares for perk
    • 10% Course Time Reduction
    • Great for anyone who still has to complete courses. If you are a bit short on cash, you can sell this off while finishing longer courses or bachelors and buy it back 7 days before the course is complete.
    Yazoo
    • 1,000,000 shares for perk
    • Free Banner Advertising
    • Few people actual use banner ads (costs $500k per day) and opt instead for forums, trade chat or direct marketing. Use to play the market.

    Active Dividends:

For stocks with active dividends, you get payouts in the form of items, property, money, happiness, energy or ammo as dividends every seven (7) or thirty-one (31) days depending on the amount of shares. The outer ring of seven (7) or thirty-one (31) arcs is countdown and the unlit arcs show you how many days until your next payout. This timer will tick at about midnight (00:00:00-00:20:00 TCT) everyday. You will also receive an event when the payout is ready. You can receive multiple increments of the same dividend if you have more shares in the stock. You can not stack payouts. The payout will sit there ready for you to collect and you need to claim your payout to reset the outer ring countdown. This means you have twenty-four (24) hours to collect the dividend before it delays your next payout.

To receive 1 increment form a stock you need 1 BB (Benefit block) of shares, the amount is different for each stock. Each following increment needs double the number of BBs as the following increment. To get increment 2, you need 2 more BBs for a total of 3 BBs. To get increment 3, you need 3 more BBs for a total of 7 BBs. For those of you who like math, you can generalize this to in order to get increment n, you need 2^(n-1) more BBs for a total of 2^n - 1 BBs.

An important thing to note is that you won't upgrade to the next increment if the countdown has started. This means if you want to upgrade to the next increment level, you have either buy the shares you need to upgrade it and wait until you collect the current payout at the lower increment level, or you have to sell your shares and rebuy enough to hit the upgraded increment level in order to upgrade immediately but this will reset the payout countdown.

Below is a list of all of the stocks with active dividends, the number of shares to get 1 BB, what each increment gets you and the interval between payouts.

    • 3,000,000 shares per BB

    What Dividends Should You Get:

    Passive Dividends:
For this one I'll split it be need

Still in education: West Side University
Company Directors: Syscore MFG, TC Media Productions, Tell Group Plc.
    Frequent Fliers: Wind Lines Travel
Merit Chasers: Torn City Motors, I Industries Ltd.
    Property Traders: Empty Lunchbox Traders
    Advertisers: Messaging Inc., Yazoo
No one - this one is completely useless:International School TC

    Active Dividends:
Before getting to the Projected Annual ROI table, let me explain a few things. For this table, Mc Smoogle Corp and Evil Ducks Candy Corp are listed with their Feathery Hotel Coupon and Erotic DVD equivalents. However, these two dividends are harder to evaluate so it's up to reader discretion to determine how much they think each is worth. I highly recommend getting at least 1 increment in both if you are happy jumping. Also Big Al's Gun Shop is not listed because its difficult to find a value equivalent. The other note is that Reinvested TCI represents the scenario where you hold the Torn City Investments dividend for only the seven days before your next 3 month bank investment and assumes 10/10 merits and 2b in the bank. The investment column for this one represents Effective Opportunity Cost and is 7/90 times the cost of the Torn City Investments dividend since you only hold the dividend for seven (7) days out of ninety (90). The 0.2% transaction fee for buying and selling the Torn City Investments dividend and then putting that money in a different stock has been subtracted from the dividend.

A more colorful version that includes cumulative stats is available at this table here. Both will auto-update. and thanks to error34043[2597899] for creating this table. And remember, these returns are based solely on dividends and not on projected stock value increases.

Since Stocks 3.0 is still new, there will be new information coming out and I will be updating this guide. Let me know if any parthas become outdated. Have fun gambling!

Prefacing this with I'm not an economist, so I might be completely off base.

Since stocks 3.0 has just come out the YTD doesn't make sense. Also YTD is a measure of success of a portfolio from my understanding it would make sense more as a personal indicator of success. For those who don't know YTD stands for Year-to-date and calculated by current value of assets + value of dividends received minus the original value of assets at the beginning of the year all divide by the original value. I think for most people in Torn what they want to know, and what would be more helpful for them, is projected annual ROI. Currently the API isn't out which makes it harder to make a good ROI table, but once the API comes out I'll put one up

This is extremely minor, but I just wanted to contribute that with ISTC, I've been able to end one course and immediately start another without having to get ahold of a Faction banker for the tuition cost since I don't currently keep any money on hand, and in turn also minimizes downtime between courses. I think that between that and being able to use it towards stock-related merits, it wouldn't be entirely useless, even if it's an extraordinarily minor return by comparison.

There are other ways to do that actually. Spend some nerve, commit crimes and earn money. Sell some of the unnecessary items etc.

Having ISTC only helps for merit. (All stock benefits one)

MCS calculations are a little bit off imo. You can use energy refill cost instead of FHC price. Getting 100 energy per week isn't equal to 8m. And you can get 150e per day with point refill for approximately 1145000, which is almost equal to MCS Return/Day value

Yeah, like I say in that little paragraph above the chart, MCS and EDC are hard to pin a value on. We chose FHCs and EDVDs since they have the best e/happy per hr of cooldown. We didn't go with refills because you can only get exactly 150e (or 100e) in a day and it costs points not money directly. Still, any item based valuation of these will be off since they will have different values to different people and there is no good equivalent. So for those 2 (and BAGS), I'd say there is a lot more personal preference involved. Tho we might change the evaluation to refill based if enough people think the same way you do.

It depends on where you are in optimizing energy gains regarding MCS. I'd argue thou that if you're at the point where you're spending the kind of money that MCS BB costs you're probably already using energy refills and considering the next step. So comparing to cans seems about right to me.

    Sweet guide.

Tip tho: Can the spreadsheet be updated with a couple of columns for "Accumulated investment" and "Accumulated return". Perhaps even accumulated ROI. Where it just sums the current row and all previous rows to give an indication on where I would land if I put 2B / 6B / 50B in stocks?

That sounds useful and simple enough to do. I'll update the chart with them soon.

Thanks to Fr00t for his suggestion! Cumulative investment, return/day and annual ROI have been updated in the colorful sheet that's linked in the main post. The embedded picture won't have them for readability's sake. May the markets forces be with you all.
