Deutsch. While I was applying for jobs in the past, I found alot of the good options where in Germany. Especially if you are new in the field.

Also, many people speak it so you can always practice it out of no where

    L4suicide [15699]

    Mandalorian

of course it depends on your career. Mandalorian is pretty solid if you want to go into interstellar history.

Otherwise I’d go with Mandarin, Bahasa, Spanish (in that order) due to the financial powerhouses that south east Asia will be dominating with in the next 20-30 years.

in fact you might as well give up speaking English..

    Aryore [1835557]

Are you referring to bahasa Melayu or bahasa Indonesia?
hmm i think he referring to bahasa indonesia because usually people says bahasa melayu as melayu and bahasa indonesia as bahasa

    TheDevilsBigToe [2204723]

Thought I'd ask the masses as opinions from around the world may help me here.

I've recently changed jobs and work within a large international company. There will be occasions where I will be communicating with others from around the world. A lot of this will be via email so in itself it's not a barrier, but this got me thinking.

My main language, and only other than a few basic words, is English.

I'd like to learn a 2nd language. And I ask for your input as I can't simply base it on which languages I'm most likely to come into contact with, as they have customers in over 190 countries, so there's a good few to choose from.

If you were to choose to learn a 2nd (or another) language with the main aim of it potentially coming into play with career progression, which language would you choose and, importantly, why? Which languages have you found to be most beneficial or widely used for yourself?

    Tia

    Beerstein [1322136]

    French.

Best to consider which ones refuse to learn and are most strongly averse to speaking English. Just some opinions based on my experiences working with people around the world.

    French
    +A lot don't speak English
+Those that can mostly seem to not want to.
    +Solid economy
+Even trying to speak French instantly shifts a switch in their heads
    -None

    Russian
    +A lot don't speak English
-Not generally a business lucrative country, especially the ones that don't speak/want to speak English

    Mandarin
    +Large economy big in business
+Probably similar to French where they'll look at you in a much more positive light if you're even trying.
-Most you deal with probably have strong English skills

    Spanish
    +Very large language reach
-As with others, probably already speak solid English.

    German
    +Major language, strong economy
-Most speak English and prefer it when talking to English speakers and sometimes even speak it to eachother.
-Probably think you have some Nazi fetish just for learning it.

I think that covers the ones most mentioned here. In general, you're probably only dealing with people that already speak solid English, which would narrow it down to the ones that will most quickly shift their opinion of you for trying to speak their language.

If you do learn a language, you should do it because it's fun though. Any other reason and don't waste your time. If it's not fun for you, stop.
Good way to break it down, I like that.

If you fail, blame someone else.

    Tia

    Ata [2507441]

First and foremost, I think it's bad practice if you're choosing to learn another language because of the work you do - tomorrow you might not work at that company but local startup that does business only with your local county. Exaggerating a bit but my point is that you should learn a language because you want to - and yes of course it can help you at work too, but only as an added bonus :)

That said, if you really want to help your job, then do some statistics on those 190 countries, where is majority of your customers from? Surely you don't have 1 customer per 1 country.

In general, as so many told you before, learning Mandarin is imperative. Do not get left behind jumping on the future superpower :)

If you want to cover the whole continent: learn Spanish (Middle and South America) or French (half of Africa).

German, because they're Europe's biggest power.

English is only my third language but if I would have to learn any new language, I'd choose one of those four mentioned above (I know some German tho).
I get what you're saying. I'm certainly not wanting another language just for work or career advancement. I've wanted to learn another language for a long time, but the added potential for work related benefits has brought the subject back to the surface.

As for company size or customer base, getting statistics would be very difficult. With almost 60k employees and nearly 7k distributors and dealers, I wouldn't like to think how many customers there are worldwide.

But you do have some very valid points and your opinions are appreciated.

If you fail, blame someone else.

    Mandarin.

Trust me they are the powerhouse for the future.

Why? They are good a copying things and making them affordable. With the number of people they have, even by spitting they could drown plenty of people.

    Agreed.

Thanks for all the input guys & girls.

I think I've made my decision, being a two stage plan.

First I think I'll go for French, for the following reasons; as mentioned it's a common language so can be useful, I know a couple of people who speak it so should be easier to practice, and my kids will be learning it in the next year or two at school.

Secondly, once I'm happy with my level of French, I'll try mandarin.

I'm in no rush, I may take many years for this and will likely need that long I know.

    Thanks all.

If you fail, blame someone else.

it all depends who your company works with. perhaps they do alot of business with china, in that case chinese would be a good choice... bear in mind most places default use english anyway, so if you deal with india you dont need to bother with that as indians are taught english almost as a primary language anyway as do many places so you will find alot of places you dont need to bother with. same with any Euro place... english is pretty much the default of all of europe now so everyone in europe understands english too. but yeah, id say chinese is always good one as im not sure they learn english like most others do, and they are set to be the number 1 most important in trade and will probably go full empire in the future so yeah, your gonna be learning chinese anyway, everyone is, get ahead of the curve lol

I think learning a 2nd language is only necessary. If you really really need to do it.

I am english. English is a really good language to learn. It is 'everywhere' after all.

In the olden days ie in the past the uk 'ruled' the world ie we had colonies/'took over' countries all over the world. English is spoken in a LOT of the world. I dont just mean The USA, canada, australia etc we 'took over' many other countries as well ie large parts of africa, India, pakistan etc. Basically english is used 'everywhere'

Just looking at gaming what we are doing now, knowing english is often necessary to communicate with your fellow gamers as many of you have already have done where your first language isnt english.

If you want to learn another language other than english you should choose what you need. The languages of france, and portugal are widely used throughout the world for similar reasons why english is used.

There are other languages you could learn as well but only if you really need it. Ie going to spend a lot of time in germany, japan, china? learn those languages. Dont bother if you are never going to go there though.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.

I think Spanish is great. Mandarin too. I doubt it'd be a big deal in the future as translating services get better, but in a business setting, learning the language of the country you'd have to deal with the most would make sense

Learning languages is fun on its own merit, and really changes your view. I think I'm quite literally different people when I speak English vs when I'm talking in hindi. Much more relaxed and informal in hindi, very professional, in character in English. In character being the nice helpful dude persona I set up for myself when I was like 17 and trawling hp forums

    Indian for sure.

Nigeria is a place to look out for but their national language is also English.

    Spanish is always good

Japanese might not be as useful but since a large amount of Japanese barely speak English, it can make a big difference
    "Indian" is not a language.

    Mandarin and Spanish.

And yeah first of paramount importance, find out what they find offensive in their culture and dont do that.
