Meat + other fillings surrounded by 2 pieces of something imo. The exterior doesn't have to be BREAD, could be anything, as long as there's 2 individual pieces surrounding meat.
ie a taco isn't a sandwich, but a chicken quesadilla would be.
A hotdog in a bun is not a sandwich because it's one bun split down the middle, but a hotdog between 2 slices of bread is a sandwich.
Korean BBQ in a lettuce wrap is not a sandwich, Korean BBQ between 2 pieces of lettuce is a sandwich.
Lettuce/tomato in between 2 pieces of bread is not a sandwich because it lacks meat. Add bacon to that and it becomes a sandwich (meat is a requirement)
What classifies a sandwich?

The General discussion of torn’s forums! So let’s hear it! What makes a sandwich a sandwich? My roomate claims all it needs is bread and or bread esc surrounding literally anything. (Example: Hot dog, taco, burger, etc.) would count.
Is he right? -

Generally, I would say it would need to have the outsides (?) be in bread form. However! I've done sandwiches, but instead of bread, I've used a cucumber sliced in half! Which is super delicious. But I would not count a hot dog/taco/burger, those are not sandwiches. >.> -

Also, meat is not a requirement for a sandwich. I would direct you to the watercress sandwich, cheese sandwich, or the humble butter sandwich for non meat sandwiches. Additionally, open face sandwiches throw a wrench in the two individual pieces of bread argument, not to mention sandwiches made with one slice of bread folded in half.
A sandwich is kind of like porn, impossible to strictly define but we all know one when we see one. -
Posted on 16:40:53 - 29/04/22 (2 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkA sub is traditionally cut all the way through with a top/bottom so it is a sandwich.. a hoagie, which I'd classify a hotdog as, is typically 1 piece of bread split down the middle filled with meats/other, which by my definition is not a sandwich.
Adding the word sandwich to the end of a word doesn't make it such. And even if it's common vernacular, its moreso that items are "sandwiched" between bread, but doesn't make it a sandwich by my above definition.
Same thing for an "open faced sandwich"... its just something on top of a slice of bread, it doesn't make it a sandwich. It's just common vernacular. In fact, an open faced sandwich is even less of a sandwich than the non-meat variants you posted above, because nothing is "sandwiched" between 2 other things.
Google says a sandwich is meat/cheese/filling between 2 pieces of bread. Hoagies are one piece of bread, as are opened faced sandwiches, so take that for what it's worth.
Bread is defined as a leavened mixture of flour/water. So would not include things like tortillas, Flatbread, rotis, etc., where I personally include those things by definition so long as there is a top/bottom piece.
But yes, I can agree w/ your last sentiment lolol, thats probably the best way to describe it. -

There is even a thing called a toast sandwich, which is a piece of toasted bread between two untoasted pieces of bread. Seriously...I will never lie to you. What I say is how I feel...
