Yeah, may be a regional thing.

Cream first, point of origin Gloucestershire (pronounced "gloss-ter-shire" if anyone is wondering).

ETA - this should probably be in non-related though

The jam is thicker, so that goes on first so you don’t mess up the cream.

Cream first. My mum is also a Devonshire Dumpling :)

Nice thick clotted cream, then mix the jam a little with a second knife so it is nice and loose and spreadable, then jam on top.
If both are too thick you get uneven quantities and I like my scones even ;)

Although I'm not a great cream lover, so there are times I just have butter and jam (obviously butter first in that scenario, lol)

My sister does the opposite, because she prefers a lot of cream and only a little bit of jam, so spreads a thin layer of jam first and cream on second.

Edit: I'm from just around the corner in South Gloucestershire, which despite the name isn't part of Gloucestershire ;)

When buying locally it would normally be Roddas for the nice thick crust, and it tends to be the clotted cream you are most likely to find in the supermarkets here (apart from own brand etc.). Although when visiting Devon it is whatever fresh local version is nearest.

But then either would work for me, due to the "jam whipping" prior to spreading (as my OCD doesn't let me spread the jam if it is thick enough that I'm likely to get cream from the first scone back in the jam jar while scooping out the jam for the second (or third, or fourth.... heheh)

I tend to eat scones as they are or with margarine on them and nothing else.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.

Jam then cream dropped on top. Real question is do you use soda water or lemonade to make your scones?
