Hello folks, please, gather around. I'm here to share the wonderful knowledge that I only recently stumbled upon myself -- the incredible appliance known as the panini press.

This all started about 2 months ago, during a sale for kitchen supplies on Amazon. I noticed there was a DeLonghi panini maker that was a solid 20% off, making it close to $45 in total. I had never owned a panini press before and figured, "Why not? Who doesn't love easy grilled cheese sandwiches?" But hoo-boy, was I in for a surprise!

Sure, a panini maker can make a plain ol' grilled cheese, but it also works with literally anything.

Upon opening the box of my brand-new DeLonghi beauty, I discovered a User's Manual describing how to prepare all sorts of food that exponentially increased my interest -- from basic sandwiches and waffles to kebabs and an entire chicken! I was simultaneously amazed, confused, and downright scared. What sort of dark magic had I stumbled upon here?? I immediately wanted, needed to know more. What else could I cook on this wondrous device? Hamburgers? Grill up some sockeye salmon? Maybe heat up some fettuccine alfredo or tomato soup?

The last 2 months have gone by in a bit of a whirlwind if I'm to be honest. I've used my precious panini press to perfect the likes of crispy bacon, blueberry pancakes, and so, so many paninis. I'm building up the courage to cook a bird; we'll see how that turns out!

One of the best parts is just getting creative with the paninis themselves... absolutely everything works! Here's just one recipe that I invented earlier today, given in the form of a stacked sandwich, starting with the bottom and working up:

    The Artery-Stopper:
By the time you're done with this little treat, your heart will literally be sobbing to itself in the corner. That's assuming it's still working; the rest of your organs will have already shut down by that point.
    • Start off with a nice, soft slice of sourdough or lighter bread variety.
    • Mayonnaise. Lots of mayonnaise. You can never have too much mayonnaise.
    • Put down some cheese; preferably something white, maybe a Swiss or Provolone?
    • Fold up some sliced deli turkey/ham or something similar.
    • More cheese. This will be a common phrase used throughout my recommended recipes.
    • Happen to have some left-over spaghetti and meatballs with marinara sauce from a lonely Italian night a few days ago? Well, I did, so spoon a nice helping on; a real mountain of pasta and meatballs!
    • More cheese. I told you this would be a recurring theme.
    • You're almost done! Just spread some more mayonnaise on your other slice of bread and stick that on top.
    • Ta-da! A 6-inch-tall sandwich, ready to get panini'd! Lift it using both hands or a forklift; whichever seems more practical at the moment, and place gently on your panini maker. Now comes the most difficult, yet important part of the task.
    • You'll need to carefully hold the sandwich as you close the lid so the whole thing doesn't shoot out on to your kitchen floor. Let your precious baby cook for about 7 minutes or until all of the cheese looks well-melted and the bread has a mouthwatering golden crust while occasionally applying small amounts of pressure to squish the sandwich down.
    • Remove your masterpiece from the press and place on a plate. Unplug your panini maker and e n j o y .

A short while after devouring your panini, don't forget to clean your panini maker! It's absolutely essential to keep it looking good and appealing to the next user. Have fun!

Panini presses just make your bread sad and condensed. The best way to make a grilled sandwich is copious amounts of butter, a pan on really low heat, and a lid.

I will fight you to the grave on this.

THIS is the first reply to my thread?! Why?? I dare you to try The Artery-Stopper on a casual skillet, Julie. We'll see who's laughing then.

Warm mayo grosses me out, and the only layers that I actually eat are marinara and cheese (all the cheese) so my version of the artery stopper would work quite nicely in a pan!

It's certainly reassuring to know that everyone agrees that PrincessJulie's nauseating suggestion that a mere pan could outdo a panini maker. Thank you all for your support after the initial shock from that scandalous post.

Panini makers are pretty boss. Wouldn't recommend anything too juicy in your panini though like egg (over easy) as it's pretty sad when the juices go everywhere.

Have also heard that cast iron panini pans are pretty good.

It does sound interesting. I've had paninis before and loved them, but I've cut out most all breads from what I eat lately. I'll just have to admire salivating food pics of perfectly pressed paninis from afar.

Paninis don't have to have bread, though; that's what's so great about them! Get a nice hamburger patty and put it between two other patties!

    Carnivore:
    • Burger patty
    • Cheese
    • Burger patty
    • Mayonnaise
    • Burger patty

Now we're talking! Problem solved :D

Don't tell anyone, but sometimes I just squeeze half the mayo bottle into the panini maker and let that heat to a boil for a bit, before tilting the panini press and pouring it into my coffee canteen to take to work. Nothing starts off the day quite like a still-bubbling 24-ounces of hot mayonnaise.
