Interesting fact here...
The names of the animal come from the viking invaders, such as pig, cow, etc...
The name of the meat come from the french, such as beef, pork, etc...
Brought into the english first by the vikings then from the normans...
Just sharing the wealth... []

Made a prime rib on Monday. Made a soup on Thursday with the leftovers.
Likely will roast a duck this weekend.

Posted on 14:21:45 - 14/10/18 (6 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkYa that's why I ask about NB and NFLD. Didn't think you'd find a moose anywhere in NS save for maybe Cape Breton.
With your choice of meat, hunting isn't a bad idea. Field dressing a moose or deer might be a bit much for you though.Have a Great Day!

Posted on 20:22:15 - 14/10/18 (6 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkVictoria and Inverness Counties have a lottery for the moose hunting that, if you get lucky enough for a draw, you receive a 5 day window to get your moose. It runs from late October till December and to me sounds like a pretty awful system that I have no interest in trying to get into.
I've done bird hunting (partridge and pheasant) and that's fine I guess but don't generally like the meat you get off hunted wild birds (bird shot and all that). I'd also rather have more wild birds hanging around to try and keep the tick populations at bay. I sometimes make some trades for hare meat but also raise my own lamb meat and have enough to sell to friends and family. I'll probably get 200-300lbs of lamb meat this year which is plenty.
Venison and moose is a treat, but not something I go looking for, usually been shared by newfoundlanders when visiting there, some Métis when I was working forestry in Northern Ontario or my grand-father and his brother's successful hunts. Couple of my ojibway friends would treat me to it too. I know I could field dress them if I was really motivated but the thought of hoofing several 100-150lbs haunches of moose meat through the woods isn't all that appealing to me to be honest.
