I am starting a food blog here and I will be concentrating on recipes, cost and health. Some of my health views may disagree with contemporary views but all views will be welcomed here.

Not all of my meals will be healthy meals and when I post a recipe I will include in the description of each meal the pro's and cons health wise for each meal.

I want to start with a few question for each of you then I will post my first meal idea.

What is your typical monthly food budget and how many people do you feed with that budget?

The reason I ask it like this is because it is more expensive to feed just one person because if you buy more food you often get a better unit price so the value of your budget very much depends on how much food you are buying.

My typical monthly food budget is about $380 lately and that feeds 4 people for the month (not counting my youngest sons baby food).

    Tonight's dinner:

    Corned Beef Remix:

2 cans Corned Beef Hash ($1 a can at The Dollar Store)
Cabbage (given to us free but average cost per head is $1.44 in the US)
Eggplant (given to us free but the average cost in the US is $1.22 each)
Jalapeno (they run about 14 cents in my area for a single pepper)
Yellow squash (given to us free but the average cost in the US is about 42 cents each)
Pepperoni Slices ($1 at The Dollar Store)

Boil the cabbage till soft. Mean while dice the Jalapeno and eggplant and slice the squash. The fry them together in a pan. In a separate pan fry the Corned Beef Hash. If you have a really fatty can then you may need to drain a little.

Make a bed of cabbage and place a single slice of pepperoni in the middle. Then give a helping of corned beef hash right on the pepperoni. Spread the veggie mixture around the hash and pepperoni and garnish with 2 slices sticking up in the hash.

    Pro's
    High vitamins K,C and Potassium
Capsaicin from the pepper is an excellent way to promote weight loss and dilate blood vessels.
    Fiber

    Con's
    High Cholesterol
    High Sodium
High Fat (saturated fat at that)

With modifications this dish could be quite healthy. However despite this dish's many health benefits the negative aspect of the high salt fat and cholesterol far out weight the positive. It is a great tasting meal and I will soon redo a healthy version.

    Cost:

at about $6 for a meal that can feed a family of 4 a reasonable portion this meal is an excellent belly filler.
