If you are interested in this, you should read the book called Seveneves. I won't give away any spoilers, but the whole idea behind the book is that one day the Moon suddenly explodes, and the rest of the planet is left scrambling to cope with the coming catastrophes that result. Really good book, if you like space stuff and hard sci-fi this is for you.
