It took eight radio telescopes around the world to piece that image together... massive data... reminds me of the song above.Earth Mother, Ganesha, Ra, Zeus, Jupiter, Mithra, Jesus, Allah,... GOD... and the Internet God of conspiracies... I beg you:

Posted on 16:50:25 - 10/04/19 (5 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkAnd some of those 8 telescopes are actually arrays of telescopes, ALMA for example is made up of 66 telescopes.
The black hole imaged is in M87, located about 55 million light years away, and is about 6.5 billion times the mass of the sun. The image shows its "shadow" (the region in which it's technically possible for light to escape, but from which very little does) which is about 2.5 times the diameter of the event horizon itself.
The swirling accretion disk appears uneven due to the effects of Doppler shift and frame dragging.
Hopefully we'll get to see Sagittarius A* in the near future too! -

Makes my brain clench up thinking about such huge numbers.
Amazing stuff.

This is equivalent to Newtons understanding of gravity, the Wright brothers taking flight, of stepping on the moon. This is so major to the advancement of science.
I'm excited to see where this leads. Excited that this is happening in my lifetime. Thanks for posting -

Don't get me wrong, as I'm really interested into these matters, but afaik there are no optics available at this point to make any pic of things that are 55 mil lightyears away from us... -

https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/1/8/16822272/black-hole-looks-like-what
In April 2017, the Event Horizon team connected radio telescopes at multiple locations across the world — as far-flung as Hawaii and the South Pole — and instructing them all to look toward Sagittarius A* for a few days. The network is the result of an international collaboration of 14 research institutions across the world.
Together, these eight telescopes have the power to “count the stitches on a baseball from 8,000 miles away,” as MIT explains. The array generated such a huge amount of data that it was more efficient to fly the data from each of the telescopes to a centralized location than it would be to transfer it over the internet.
For years, the scientists have been stitching all that data together. The hope is that the final image will show the event horizon, the boundary beyond which no light can escape. That event horizon will likely be surrounded by an accretion disc, a bright, incredibly energetic ring of matter that swirls around the black hole.
https://www.quora.com/How-do-we-convert-radio-waves-into-pictures
We can change, or modulate, the radio signal. We can change its amplitude (strength) or its frequency (wavelength).
You probably know that modern pictures are composed of small dots called pixels. If we think of just a black-and-white picture, we could change the strength, or amplitude of the radio signal for the brightness of each pixel. We start at one corner of the picture, scan across the picture, measure the brightness of each pixel and change the amplitude of the radio signal appropriately.
At the other end, we use the strength of that signal to change the brightness of the dots on the screen and reassemble all of those dots back onto the correct place at the screen.
If we want a color picture we must find a way to modulate the signal in three different ways for each of the three primary colors red, blue and green.
Since you may know that we store pictures in form of binary ones and zeros, we could simply change the amplitude of that signal to be higher for a one and lower for a zero. Then we just send all these ones and zeros and reassemble them in order to see the picture.Last edited by MachineGunSteve on 18:24:19 - 10/04/19 (5 years ago)Earth Mother, Ganesha, Ra, Zeus, Jupiter, Mithra, Jesus, Allah,... Posted on 18:35:21 - 10/04/19 (5 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkCorrect - this image was not taken by an optical telescope, it was taken by radio telescopes.
It's important to remember though that light waves and radio waves are all electromagnetic waves, defined by their different frequency ranges and energy levels. We have a prejudice for light, because we evolved to use it (see "opsins"), but there could be alien creatures with organic receptors for radio waves who would look at an optical photograph of a black hole and ask the same question you have - but the other way around. Of course, any critters that evolved to "see" radio waves (or x-rays) would have to be massive...like a telescope array, due to the less energetic nature of radio waves in comparison to light. -

Holy Moly is that right? How we get to this, whos made this system and whys it always going to happen..and why AM I talking about it in a black hole thread?
Im sorry i dont know how this will go down because i know y'all love science and science cant be brought etc.
The same guys making up data to pour drugs and give bad advice on to the public that actually kills folks in vast numbers MADE UP the the same kinda 'data' you spew in threads like this.People who conjure up Star Trek worlds and science come up with mind boggling dogshit which who knows, may have a bit of correct maths in it.
Whats the harm in giving fairy tales to space kids compared to the 'science' of drugging kids with meth cuz now everyone and his sons dog has ADHD..nothing and it sells just as well!!
Bad science,bad doctors,bad drugs...good drugs,good doctors,good science
Nope...'Space' science didnt stave off corruption,it came hand in hand from the get go.

It's nice to at least know that you can't see the hole for what it is in 3 dimensions.
The 2d illustrations and imaginations of black holes so far really didn't cut it after seeing how they really look. -
