The real problem is scientific illiteracy and a lack of logical thinking skills - and by logic, I mean formal logic, along with a basic understanding of both frequentative and Bayesian statistical concepts. Do programming and dogma exist in science? Of course, but not to the extent they do outside of science, because science explicitly provides the ways and means for the deconstruction of illogical, superstitious thinking. The non-scientist will never catch up, unfortunately, because those skills take discipline, and most people want easy answers. It is much easier to think that humans could not build the pyramids than it is to talk to a team of architects and engineers and find out that they are very confident that they could build a pyramid with 10,000-year-old labour and technology. (Which I have done, by the way - the only actual hard part is creating a true square, but even that is achievable within the parameters of ancient mathematics.)
