The International Space Station's 3-D printer completed the first phase of a NASA technology demonstration by printing a tool with a design file transmitted from the ground to the printer. The tool was a ratchet wrench.

"For the printer's final test in this phase of operations, NASA wanted to validate the process for printing on demand, which will be critical on longer journeys to Mars," explained Niki Werkheiser, the space station 3-D printer program manager at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "In less than a week, the ratchet was designed, approved by safety and other NASA reviewers, and the file was sent to space where the printer made the wrench in four hours.”

We should have abandoned the space station long ago and replaced it with a better one that was capable of manufacturing. Failure to do so has severely limited space exploration. We should have done this shit decades ago long before 3d printers. The current space station was incredible for its time but compared to what we have been capable of it is incredibly laughable.

We should have doing a lot of things in space, but we decided to waste all our money, energy, resources on other stuff.

    And so it goes.

Yes im afraid the International Space Station is more or less a white elephant.

But the funding is in place for it and we are going to run with it until it is so decrepit that it has to be abandoned.

Like the russians did with Mir.

It is a international project and it will be there long past its sell by date before we move onto something else. Or maybe nothing at all.

Its hideously expensive to keep it running.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.
