So, I started making oil paintings during lockdown and I was looking for ways to share them. I don't really like social media but I figured maybe this would be a nice place.
Before this, I have done some pyrography, burning images into wood. That does take a long time to pull off, so that made me want to try painting. So far, I'm pretty interested to learn more but do want to underline that I am an absolute beginner. With all these pictures I'm just trying out different things, I'm not expecting myself to perform very well. Any feedback is welcome nonetheless.

I was also wondering if anyone can recommend a nice movie still to paint? Or would someone like to have their portrait painted? If you can send me a cool shadowy picture I might try it out.

Currently working with just 4 colors: Cadmium red, yellow ochre, titanium white and paynes grey. Not a very good landscape palette, but perfect for portraits. Or so they say on youtube.

Current projects in their current states :)

    Finished in june 2021:

The doggo is done. Unfortunately he died while the painting was being made. This made the painting very special for the owners, but for me, I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it like this. Knowing now it has become of such importance to them, I would have wanted to do more, bigger, more durable (this just on cardboard canvas):

And we have these 'work in progress' pics:

Fantastic work. LOVE the use of light and shadows in the last one. The fingers of the right hand look almost tangible. Have you tried using acrylic?

I did not expect so many responses in such a dead part of the forum, thanks guys! Cheers me up.

I have tried acrylics. Something I can't seem to get right in acrylics, is remembering the colors I use. As the paint dries, it dulls out the color and then I start messing up the colors.
I think you can counter this my making your paint wet with special medium in between layers, but I basically just stopped trying after a while of not being satisfied. Also I love how easy oil is to mix and blend, I need the extra hours to come back to stuff later on.

I should also mention I use water-mixable oil paint. First layers are basically like watercolor-thin layers, only in the later layers I start with thicker oily layers. First layers dry in a few days, then for the later layers it needs like 1-2 weeks tops.

The Buddhist monk is breathtaking with his stare. The intensity of his stare. I would love to see this in person. Wow.

Just politely speak with a feminist for 2 minutes.

They'll figure out a way to be offended and you'll see the intensity in the stare.

Lol. I wont get into that.

To be able to portray such a human feeling in that glance is the amazing part.

Sad thing is the OP may never create something of that caliber to evoke that kind of emotion. Maybe they will? It often drives artists insane chasing that ability to convey emotion like this.

Added my dad dog's to the OP. Started this one directly onto the wood. Not very clever, but it looks okay for a first layer.
