He seems to enjoy mentions butts all over the place, and I'm wondering if it's only for the female players.
for all you avid mission fulfillers out there, I'd like to see whether this motif continues past the first few missions. Document it here! -

With buns like that, girl you could open a bakery. Park that behind of yours down on that chair right there, it's distracting me and we got important business to take care of.
...
Now get outta here with your buns missy, I can never think straight with a woman in the room. -

Like that song about the lady. I gotta warn you though, he is one tough cookie, and you're probably gonna get your butt licked.
//I know this one isn't as suggestive (assugestive), but it's still worth mentioning! -

Posted on 14:57:56 - 16/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkIt's funny that Duke can speak suggestively to women here, but I bet he won't be rattling off any racial slurs. Along with very old models of cars and in-flight notes that are from ten years ago, Duke's dialog fits in with the anachronistic aspect of the game -- many descriptive details are way behind the times. lol, maybe female players will start making only 65% of the income of male players in income and mugging? perhaps we will be denied promotion beyond level 50? there are so many "1980's and earlier" ways to keep us in our place. just hope we see a woman NPC in the missions eventually, preferably doing something besides owning a brothel. I'm thinking of sending a copy of the "Kill Bill" films to the development team for inspiration. -

Nice work. Only downside is my sis has started wearing miniskirts again. No dude wants to see his sister's cakehole on display. I'm gonna buy her some nice smart pants. "

Posted on 18:31:07 - 16/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkoh, at my age, appreciative comments on my anatomy are welcomed if not encouraged. I'm decidedly not put off by the dialog. But I remember what it's like to be 25 (in RL) and we don't want to lose any young, female players when we have so few. For those who wonder why we care about the female demographic, read this: http://flurrymobile.tumblr.com/post/115192642055/mobile-gaming-females-beat-males-on-money-time
For many games, women keep the servers up and running. They play and they pay. There are plenty of other articles supporting this perspective. Note the bar for management/simulation mobile games.
I'm looking forward to the female physicist. -

Also I'm fairly certain you identified as male on here up until recently? Am I missing something? -

Posted on 19:18:43 - 16/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkyep, totally missing something. I'm female just as God made me, lol. Always played female too. Some players *have* assumed I was a guy and I didn't always correct them, as it didn't seem important to the topic.
I'm fine with Duke's personality. But answer me this: If Duke went after a racial group or a religious group is a way that indicated his prejudicial dislike of said group, would you be ok with that? What if he told a racial or religious minority to get out because their physical characteristics, as perceived by Duke, were bothering him? We'd be bordering on hate language then, and so you won't be seeing it in this game. Similar language, when used to refer to women, is socially acceptable. Just pointing out the dichotomy here, an interesting artifact of most human societies in our reality. -

Posted on 14:11:42 - 17/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkSo when he insults us men does this mean the same thing will happen to us? Because that's what Duke keeps doing to us aswell. Point is it's just his character, it's who he is. It's not like it's a real person insulting you for real aspects etc. It's a little bit exagerated to call things like 'good looking cause of your buns' or his sister wearing miniskirts disadvantaging to woman isn't it?

Posted on 15:08:05 - 17/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkIt would make the game seem more realistic with "hate language" from npc's, seeing how most criminals aren't exactly PC. But I'm sure someone would get butt hurt about it and call the NAACP or PETA or some shit.

Posted on 15:55:45 - 17/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkok, the first time I had this very same argument was sometime in the late 70's. I already know all the points and counterpoints, and as Sartre suggested, there is No Exit. Instead of engaging, I am going to take the very best advice ever given to me in this game, proffered by CDF when I was a mere lass of 15 days: "Suck it up, Buttercup." Just so we're clear, I'm saying that to myself, not to you. I know an infinite loop when I see one. I'm just going to suck it up, and say, "Why yes, you are right, how dim-witted of me not to see the obvious parallel here." Should any woman like to pick up the baton and go for this one, it's all yours. -

Posted on 16:41:05 - 17/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkah, you're right, it was BFM. I owe CDF an Armalite. Confusion of memories is the first sign of... something, I don't remember now. At any rate, it's not a rap, it's a compliment: summing up the most important rule of Torn in only four words is pretty good. And if he was insensitive, at least he was trying to be insensitive. Self-awareness ranks higher than sensitivity in my book. -

He just sounds completely unintelligent like the dumbest loan shark on the planet. It's like a 10 year old wannabe wrote the script for him.

Posted on 22:27:41 - 18/12/15 (9 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkI'd originally pictured Duke as someone similar to Badger in Joss Whedon's "Firefly" series (played by actor Mark Sheppard). Badger appears in the pilot episode and again in ep 4 "Shindig". Here's a link to the character: http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Badger
He's a petty criminal, but thinks of himself as a "businessman" and thus superior to the junk scavengers he trades with. He feels money and his job denotes social rank and misses out on the importance of honor, loyalty, ethical behavior and social graces altogether. What's important isn't how we see Badger, but how Badger sees himself. And he projects that need to be superior and in control.
I guess Joss Whedon wasn't available for the mission rewrites, eh? :)
