George Porter Jr turns 71 next month, nominated for Rock HoF with The Meters (may not get in tho) and still plays live quite often.

Telluride - Jam in the Van

And here's one of my personal faves, Dave Schools, booming out a Meters cover song with Panic

    Just Kissed My Baby

Looking forward to more posts...there's alot of talent out there, I sure as shit didn't get any.

I would say Django Reinhardt. Not because he was 'the best' when compared point blank to other guitarists, but because he not only learned to play without two fingers, he inspired dozens of now famous instrumentalists (such as Tony Iommi), along with amateurs and professionals alike (even some not on the guitar, like myself) who were disabled to overcome their disabilities and play just as well as able bodied musicians.

I mean, yeah, he's not the greatest musician ever, but I honestly cannot think of a guitarist whose music affected more lives than him, and in such a profound manner! It's because of him that I kept playing the violin while my fingers weren't working properly- it's because of him that Black Sabbath is even a thing! I know my opinion is unpopular, but come on, the man was pretty incredible.

There are lots of songs of his online, but this is an improvisation I particularly love.

Actually a bit surprised that Django wasn't mentioned above.  So I don't consider your opinion unpopular.

I also didn't appreciate his talent until much later and really unsure why given his close relationship to Stephane Grappelli.

But my path to Grappelli was: Garcia>Vassar>Grisman>Grappelli so somehow missed Django even though I was listening to alot of jazz.

Anyway...Garcia, Iommi, and Django all had physical imperfections and their play style greatly benefited imo.

He doesn't get a fair shake imo.

Definitely not a guy who called alot of attention to himself. Things are certainly different now that Petty is gone.

Here's a bit of his latest project. Edgy, loose, and dirty.

    Biggles [1665757]

I think the single most talented guitarist is Steve Vai. Sure, he can shred faster than almost anybody (arguably Batio is faster) but it's not about the sheer speed. He's also able to play in more different styles and with more different techniques than pretty much anybody. From shred metal to rock n' roll, all the way through to flamenco. If you can name it, he can play it better than anybody else you can name.

However, much as I loved Passion & Warfare, a lot of his more recent stuff has been egotistical composition nonsense that would have embarrassed Zappa. But when he stops taking the piss and just starts shredding... untouchable.

Yes...Vai's awesome...but an arrogant prick. Heard him basically call Hendrix a bubble gum rocker in concert then proceeded to mess up Little Wing and another of Jimi's songs back to back. Lost a lot of respect for him then but ...yes..Vai 's playing is freakin' beautifully "out there" even if disrespectful.

Also...Randy Rhoads was mind-blowing. Saw him in Portland Me. in 1981 and couldn't have cared less that Ozzy was yammering away on stage beside him...Rhoads had me mesmerized. He was dead 6 months later so feel so grateful I saw him at least once.

I've seen Trucks and Jack White live off this list.

Not a huge White Stripes fan, but there's some of it I do like. But he's certainly an interesting man, with alot of talent apart from music.

My only Trucks show was from before the full merger with his wife, and at a small venue.  Love the Soul Kitchen Music Hall in Mobile!!  They pull in everyone from ICP, Snoop Dogg, and George Clinton to Mickey Hart, Col Bruce Hampton, and Tedeschi Trucks.

Back to Mr. Trucks. This time with Jimmy MF Herring.  Superb video of two world class guitarists.

Careful, 14 min long.  Brother Duane Trucks on drums. These guys played 8 shows here in my backyard over 3 years. Didn't miss any of them.

But we don't get any of this without Mikey Houser, RIP.

    In no order but:

Stevie Ray Vaughn.  Totally unique.  Listen to Little Wing.

    Buddy Guy.   Delta blues, brother.

Mark Knopfler.   Straits were great but give the Shangri La album a listen to learn what finger picking is supposed to be.

    Keith Richards-5 string virtuoso.

Clapton/Page/Beck and my guilty pleasure is Prince...he could really wail on that thing when he wanted to.

Shoot...let me throw David Gilmour out there too....I think he's chronically under rated.
