Too many amazing guitarists to crown any one the best.
I personally enjoy Knopfler, David Gilmore, Clapton, also pretty amazed no one named Eddie Van Halen yet.
Come on, he's a ****ing magenious.

I also enjoy pieces written by Isaac Albéniz and Francisco Tárrega, but ofc I cannot judge upon their ability to play the guitar, as they lived over 100 years ago.

Im a year late on this particular post but oh well, I can't imagine Isaac Albeniz was a particularly good guitarist given he was in fact a pianist, maybe he played a wee bit of guitar though. Tarrega must have been amazing to have composed such pieces throughout his life and also to have run away from home so many times at a young age to try and begin a career of musical performance.

As I said, I have no account on their skill ^^ just on the wonderful pieces they wrote.

I'm surprised I havent seen any metal musicians mentioned, what they play tends to be a lot more difficult and technical than any other genre. There is no way to definitively say who is the best because there is no measurable way to "score" them. My personal favorite guitarist is Dave Mustain of Megadeth. He not only plays guitar, he is also the vocalist for Megadeth and writes most of the songs

Steve Vai is my favourite. The film Crossroads is my reason.

Just read Sun Tzu and enough of this Melrose Place that seems to be Torn.

People rarely mention George Harrison among great guitarists, but I think his emotional slide-down playstyle and nag for finding wonderful little melodies should rank him among the greatest, even if he never really was particularly good at solos or playing "fast".
