Here's one for the gatekeepers and gamers of torn...

    Is mobile gaming really gaming?

With the recent rise in official events, and even tournaments of mobile games like Random Dice, Clash Royale/CoC, Cytus II, etc. I've questioned the impact of mobile games, and started to question if we can really call it, "gaming" wanted to know what torn thinks about it :p

Well mobile gaming is like console gaming... Likewise consoles, it is a subpar device, but we consider using them as gaming none the less...

Why would it not be? Mobile phones are way more advanced by now than most consoles that marked history anyway.

In some cases, thinking Stardew Valley for example, you play the exact same game on PC and mobile, not a dumbed down version... So if anyone questions if mobile gaming is gaming, they should also question what games are real games...

The real diference with mobile is that is more directed to casual gamers where the low effort pay to win proliferates while other platforms not as much.

True! I thought it was, I've just seen many gatekeepers call mobile gaming, "not real gaming" and felt like it needed to be re-evaliated with how powerful the phones in our pockets are getting

I think it depends on the games you play not the device. If you are playing a casual game then I'd say it's more a time waster than gaming. But if you play competitive games then yes I'd label it as gaming.

If mobile gaming is not gaming, then I would be curious to find out when you think gaming actually became gaming. There were plenty of games on Atari, Intellivision, ColecoVision, etc. that were much further from a typical gaming experience that most things on my phone are. If the phone games don't count, why should those ones count?

I think mobile gaming can be, I've just heard a lot from other communities (kinda toxic ones tbh) say it isn't. Since phones gaming has expanded since the last time I heard it about 4 years ago, I wanted to see if it's changed haha.

Mobile gaming is gaming but i see it as gaming lite. You dont really get the full experience.

I have been a serious gamer for nearly 40 years. I have tried mobile games but they dont do anything for me.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.

my take on most of the "is X really Y" questions is usually "lol who cares"

i can't imagine having enough of my self-perception tied into video games that i would ever care if people who played differently than me were TRUE GAMERS or not

The mobile devices often have solid computing power and graphics rendering ability.

But people's usage patterns are different regarding their phones. I think a lot of it is ergonomic, but I also think at least part of it is about connection speeds and the payment model. The agreements Apple AppStore or Google Play have with app developers are much different than the agreements that game developers have with Steam, GOG, or HumbleBundle. The latter rarely have games with advertisements beyond demos, as they tend to instead rely on DLCs and new modules. Many mobile games use mechanisms like wait or pay and premium currencies that they use that aren't found in desktop games. And desktop games usually don't have batteries that randomly run out during the session.

Mobile games earn more than console and PC games and yes, it's real gaming.
There are a lot of awesome mobile games too and older PC ports. Like vice city etc…

Can be hard to tell with the early ones from a screenshot , especially in their original form.

not if you emulate the original versions instead of the remakes :D

well, there's a fair chance i'd mix up ff1 and ff2 but iirc all the rest look fairly distinct from each other

Emulators with a clip and a controller can work pretty nicely, I find the touch screen controller a bit annoying outside of anything turn based. Controller support for most games I've tried outside emulators has been pretty shoddy unfortunately.

I use a gba emulator for the original versions.

I was talking about the untrained eye.
