"What should happen when one spouse, who owns a property (usually a PI), goes totally inactive and the upkeep and staff costs put their account into the negative? Should the other spouse get to continue living there for free indefinitely ? Or should a system stopper be instituted to prevent years and years of free rides?
The instance that caught my attention was approximately 5 years. Keep in mind that upkeep of 352k a day is 128m per year. Obviously losing a partner sucks, but you always have the option of finding another. Most stay with an inactive spouse for the merits... ofc that's a conscious choice made for their own benefit." TIGRRRRRR

"Make it so when staff aren't paid for a week. They quit. Would be logical IMO." Core

    Optional

"I agree. It gives the spouse and unfair advantage. After a year or two of inactivity, the spouse should be given the option to buy the property at a discounted rate and if they don't want to the property it returns to the system. The property owner is returned 90% of the purchase price of the property minus the upkeep costs that have built up." DetectorMan

"Returned money would become a cashier check that lasts as long as the player comes back and takes it out." Core

    Optional

Private Island Vault has two rooms. If the spouse that owns the property kicks out the other spouse, the spouse would get their money back in a cashier check.

If the vault can hold 500m, each spouse can store up to 250m into their room.

    Optional

Vault sizes can also be upgraded to 750m then 1000m.

I am against this purely on the reason there isn't an overly fair way to do it. That and the fact that it's such a minor issue over what is essentially a very small amount of money.

So who would pay the rent in the 2 years of inactivity?
So the person who quits will then just be mugged to death and loses all their money. So they lose a 850m property for a debt of 280m tops?

Not sure exactly. Something like this...
    1) Abandoned/Heartbroken spouse receives a mail: Your hubby has gone into debt and is unable to cover the upkeep, you have 7 days to cover the $x,xxx, xxx by sending them money or further action will be taken.

    2) Your spouse has not fulfilled his obligations to pay upkeep, you may now assume ownership of the property OR visit the Properties page and select "Abandon property"

    3) Hamster gets himself a property and the spouse that left only ran up an overdraft of $3,000,000 rather than $50 hundredty milliony.

    4) Spouse returns to game, just $3,000,000 in debt, and shares their story in the support group frequented by abandoned company and faction owners.

after 1 week of not getting paid the staff should quit. could even make a merit out of it.

So if I go halves with a PI and my partner quits, after 1 week I now have a useless PI that has no staff and I lose out on half my money?

They should have traded you the PI if they thought so much about you. Also you should always try to get some type of contact with someone you "went half's on a pi" with. the only deal i have with my spouse is that we both rent a PI for 30days, every other month, so one month i rent it, the other month he rents it. if I were to buy a PI I would not expect him to do anything.

Plus if you do go halfs with someone and you notice they quit, then you should be sending that other person money each day or week to prevent the PI staff from leaving.

If you go halves on a property and your spouse sells it, you have nothing. That's legal in the game, splitting payments like that is risky.

I've always thought it was stupid that going inactive would make people millions of dollars in the negative. R+ from me.

I think it's unfair to pay for staff on a PI you don't own. If you think the other person should pay the staff fees you need to create a system were the property fairly gets transferred over the property.

The only issue here is the continued employment of staff when the owner is inactive (and the possibility of racking up significant debt as a result) - if the owner of the PI goes inactive then just have the staff automatically be dismissed when the owners cash on hand drops below zero. There's nothing stopping the spouse from continuing to stay in the property, algeit at a lower max happy level.

Problem solved - no need to screw around with removing the property or giving it to the spouse then.

If the spouse went halves in the PI and the other player has gone AWOL or quit without handing the PI over to them then that's just bad luck as others have mentioned above - as others have mentioned there is a risk when you split the cost of anything in the game with someone you can't stay in contact with.

The other alternative would be to allow the spouse to "buy" out the missing player, but then you'd need to keep track of who paid what so it wouldn't help players who have already split the cost of a PI in the past - then there is also the issue of where that "buy-out" money goes (because if it goes to the inactive player then they'll just get mugged).
