Over the last few weeks ( the summer holidays for schools) there are the usual newbs that start and then find it hilarious to troll chat and get banned, then start another account, rinse and repeat.

It would be in everyones best interest to put either a 12 or 24hr lock on chats for that first 12 - 24 hrs. It would certain help the staff, especially the few that have spent hours banning the same ppl on a multitude of accounts.

    Feed back pls.

Global chat should never be restricted. Sorry Max but you don't own it, it belongs to everyone equally.

If you restrict global chat you solve no issues overall, you still have the same 'issues' in either new player chat or trade. Or potentially even make it harder to be reported.

And if you restrict trade chat then you effectively turn new player chat into a trade chat for newbies, makes it even harder for them to have conversations and socialise with others their own age.

If players are restricted from global are they also restricted from trade? If not do they just have conversations in there and get punished from staff for doing so...? The idea of restricting global I feel only has a net negative result.

What chats really need is shadow bans. Add those as a function for staff to add as well as regular bans. That would go a long way to curb the effect that spammers have.

(for those who don't know, a shadow ban would have the same functionality as a shun on IRC, the user is 'banned', but only server side, not client side. To the user who is banned it still seems that their spam messages are getting through, whereas actually to everyone else they are not. This would give the illusion to the spammer that they are spamming when they aren't, eventually they'd get bored and just give up thinking they were just being ignored or that staff weren't bothering with them despite already doing so, or at the very least would go a considerably longer time before creating a new account to try and spam again)

R+, I think this suggestion should be at least the bare minimum for using global. As said in global, I personally think a 1 DP purchase for access. I think that is a tiny amount, expect for multi's who would have to pay out loads to continually spam through different accounts.

    bogie

did you actually read it properly?

im talking about a 12 or 24 hour intitial ban on all newbies for the explicit purpose of stopping the 'instant creation of spammer accounts' that we know and love. After the 12 or 24 hr all chats would be availible.

thanks for the lecture btw >:(

    I did read it :/

If you restrict chat from the offset you also potentially damage new player retention.

Spammers are not going 24/7, however legit new accounts are always signing up. Many stick around after immediately finding the chat boxes (to them global chat is already minimised and new player chat is the only one immediately active) and speaking with their fellow newbies.

If they sign up and have nothing like that, nowhere to go to ask questions, not sure where to turn to then they're more likely to quit... this idea would be more damaging to legit players than spammers. If a spammer wants to spam, then they'll do so.

how about a compromise from a previous suggestion?

a 2 -3 hr initial ban which can be negated on purchasing a dp with rl cash? that way potential new players that will stay will get full oppotunity/

Max, I honestly don't think there was anything wrong with your original time suggestion.

Also, Bogie, if you think about it new starters already have a newbie chat box they can access, plus Sweeny is always fast in answering any questions new players have in the new player forum, or at least he was when I was under 30 days old - not long ago.

Plus don't forget when you talk about new player retention that most of the game is "locked" to new players anyway. I have only just opened up all the Casino options, and flying is still something I am unable to do. Driving / racing requires time put in for the general education course and there are other Crimes locked until completing certain courses (hacking) or donating (Gas Can).

I don't think it necessarily a bad thing to make global chat something else to unlock as you progress through the game.

in fairness toBogie, he is correctin saying that the chats are a good source of info if used correctly

but i believe you do have a point as well.

It has to be balanced to draw in the new players to keep the business running BUT there does need to be a more inteilgent policing method. The staff that come into global do their best with what they have but its always ' after the fact'. We need preventive not curative action.

I thought staff were supposed to help them with questions in new player chat ?
