Actually, the bill says that the decision to graduate students won't rely on standardized state test results. The tests are still being administered--they just aren't used as a deciding factor to whether students have mastered a subject or not. It sounds like credits in these areas are still required. As a teacher, I tentatively think this is a good idea, since the format of these standardized assessments doesn't give a valid read of many students' skills, not just those from minority backgrounds.

You're right, so if they're lacking in these skills it's better to also make sure they don't have a diploma as well, that'll make them more employable.

Yup. And they're going to keep teaching and assessing those subjects. Important notes from this article:

-Prior to this bill, only rarely did students fail to graduate because of performance on the standardized tests in question.

-Essential skills, including the 3 Rs, are assessed by projects AND standardized tests, and the decision to graduate students has hinged on their successes in both areas. Now the standardized tests won't factor into those decisions.

-Standardized tests often are not valid tests, meaning they don't truly assess the skills they are purported to assess. Take the ACT, for example. Ostensibly it's an assessment of reading, writing, math, and science. Actually though it's a test of students' test-taking strategies and logic, especially on the STEM sections.

I don't teach in Oregon, but I'm astonished how much time some teachers in my school spend giving students practice tests to prepare for the 'real deal.' Every year 3rd grade and up takes the MAP test, which is a state assessment used to gauge how well districts are teaching the subjects in question. Last year the 3rd grade teachers spent 3-4 weeks of giving practice tests to their students so they could be comfortable with the MAP. In the meantime, all the usual instruction in actual writing, reading, and math went out the window until this was over.

I'd think that you, as a conservative, would favor the idea of a reduction of the importance of these state-mandated tests, which to me are one of many symptoms of government overreach in public education in the U.S. I wouldn't cry many tears if state tests were dispensed with all together, in fact, but that's not even what the bill in Oregon is enforcing. Hopefully things will head in that direction, though.

Standardized testing is not a good measure for knowledge or capability. It's a kludge we use because we like...well... standardization.

Texas standardized tests for middle schoolers "was" the curriculum when test season started. We were taught how to most effectively take a test rather than taught information. I was instructed, for example, precisely how many paragraphs to have for the essay portion of the test, what each paragraph should convey and cover, and this specific essay format was drilled into us, because that format has shown the most success from the black box that was TAS scores afterwards.

Right. I think standardized tests are useful and sometimes necessary, but their uses are blown out of proportion and far more weight is placed on them than there should be. It probably benefitted you to learn that essay format specific to the test so that you could learn that different situations call for different essay formats...but again, that's more a test of your adaptability than your written communication skills.

My students who have IEPs routinely score far below average on state and district tests because of their attention spans or limited capacity to cope when given a stressful task. Their true abilities don't shine through when they take these assessments, no matter how many accommodations they receive.
