Ripley, don't know how old you are, but back circa 1990 it was the middle of a big Political Correctness push. Sure that's some years ago now, but I remember it well enough.  It certainly seemed as though saying MC was being made into a social faux pas.  I remember that Macy's department store, among other places, replaced MC with Happy Holidays, which is fine. However there was a customer outcry that shamed Macy's into allowing MC to be said in their stores again.  It was actually a thing.  This, as you might imagine stuck in some craws and it has been a talking point for conservative pundits since.   No, I don't think that there is war on Christmas, but it seemed as though there was one.
