There is a shift in the world order to a multipolarity. The supremacy of the US is coming to an end with or without Trump, because of the rise of China. So US has to pick selectively where it wants to get involved. It is assumed the US will focus on American continent but also can't let China get too much influence in the asian-pacific region with Taiwan. So when US is not focusing on Europe it will have to work out its own security architecture how to prevent Putin moving further west because it is not certain that he won't continue what he's doing if he gets his pieces of Ukraine.
