Is any job really "Essential"? Outside of a handful, I'd argue no.

I agree with that statement. The only jobs I see as essential are jobs that if nobody does, bad things happen. The guy at BK not flipping burgers will not have any negative outcomes...might actually have some amazing outcomes.

I mean, when it gets right down to it, only farmers and hunters would be essential. We eat, sleep, and die.

Depends on if your want to see society revert to pre 1800s or have any real world view or not.
Society needs a lot more than 'eat sleep and die'. But im not 14 trying to be deep either, so i might be missing something. -

police, firefighters, EMTs, doctors, folks who are part of the power providers would also be on that list.

you can replace those 2 words with stock clerk if you disagree
"Refusing to help a neighbor who's house burned down is shitty. Refusing when you helped start the fire is monstrous."

Most millionaires are worthless. There aren't many Elon Musk in the world. He's a billionaire, but he at least keeps inventing, keeps trying to better the world. Most just live the good life.

whether elon invented anything or not, it doesnt matter, hes using his wealth to propel humanity to the next era, the next step, the space age. and has his sights set pretty high in that terraformation is probably a pretty mid to late space colonial age thing to do.
the advances we can get i cannot describe.... but think on going from the medieval age to the industrial age.... the life expectancy of humans increased a good 20 years and the quality of life improved.... so i believe musk is one of the more responsible good billionaires that can drag all of humanity up whether some of us see that now or not, his advanced will increase our quality of life and life expectancy and the survivability of our species. plus humans overpopulating this one planet will cause our lives to be worth less and life to get more miserable, we need to control our population which we cant do, the only other way is a offload and spread of population through many more planets. -

Why, even the article states the same, I think he is just some rich kid buying companies and abusing tax payers money to go after a completely unrealistic dream.

Thing is, Musk has invented. Maybe not in a way ol Cap believes. But he has a lot of stuff going on.
Falcon Rocket is one of his most impressive feats. A reusable Rocket. And an electric rocket engine.
Even one of his smaller creations, the "boring brick" is very cool. It's much stronger than normal bricks, and far cheaper. He would have them made during the making of tunnels and hyper loops. when you have to move a lot of earth anyway, why not make strong bricks for dirt cheap. (pun intended) -

I'm guessing you didn't actually read it? Where does it say that he invented nothing, and only bought companies and was abusing tax payers?
Cause it really only mentions companies He himself has made, Like Space X and Telsa. And Paypal, but he sold that. -

there isn't lol, he is a fraud with a big mouth, that's all.
there is no evidence that boring bricks" are actually strong as he claims, he did some unrealistic projects for some cities wasting taxpayer money to be able to fund his rocket fetish, so despite everything you believe space X is still mainly paid by taxes
Elon Musk’s growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies
"Tesla Motors Inc., SolarCity Corp. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., known as SpaceX, together have benefited from an estimated $4.9 billion in government support, according to data compiled by The Times. The figure underscores a common theme running through his emerging empire: a public-private financing model underpinning long-shot start-ups.
“He definitely goes where there is government money,” said Dan Dolev, an analyst at Jefferies Equity Research. “That’s a great strategy, but the government will cut you off one day.”
funny those "free market" adepts are the first ones to hold up their hands when the government gives money. -

He didn't make Tesla himself:
Tesla was founded (as Tesla Motors) on July 1, 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in San Carlos, California.[1][2]
He bought it
PayPal the same:
PayPal was originally established by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek in December 1998 as Confinity,[11] a company that developed security software for handheld devices. It had no success with that business model, however, so switched its focus to a digital wallet.[12] The first version of the PayPal electronic payments system was launched in 1999.[13] -
