Italy have 'old codgers' in the centre of defence, assuming they both play.

Englands only chance is to attack them. If england play a defensive formation we have no chance. Italys energy in midfield and attack will overwhelm us.

Even if we play a attacking game its still going to be very difficult to beat Italy..

If we play a defensive formation we have no chance at all.

    ltsZahid [2694248]

Those old codgers are still some of the best defenders in the world unfortunately...

We'll have to get lucky but I think there's a good chance of it coming home. At the very least I'm certain we could take it to penalties if it came to it.

    dunmugmeh [538353]

I dont think we can beat them if you want me to be honest.

But the only way to beat them is to attack them. A defensive formation cant work against Italy. If we play a formation like we did against Germany we are screwed before the match even starts. 2 full backs on each side wont work against Italy.

    ltsZahid [2694248]

I think what will decide it is whether sterling plays. In the end it didn't matter with the other matches but we are going to need players that can actually pass...
There have always been too many 'headless chickens' playing for England. For every Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Glenn Hoddle there has always been 10 times as many 'headless chickens' playing for england. The headless chickens literally lose their heads and cant even do the basics.

A lot of players cant handle pressure well.

Sadly there are a LOT of headless chickens in the england squad now

Yes Sterling is a headless chicken. But his pace could hurt the old codgers in Italys defence.

Forum signatures make my eyes hurt so i have turned them off.

Yes. Sterling is a headless chicken sadly.

Im a Liverpool fan. I was fine when we sold him to Man City. We got great money for the player that he is. He does have many good attributes. But he isnt world class. he isnt a killer striker. He lacks composure when in the opponents penalty area.

Personally i wouldnt play Sterling against Italy.

    Multipass [1955315]

    I’m English/Italian. This will be a hell of a game : )

I will say this: England fans booed their own team for kneeling. They booed the danish national anthem. One of them used a laser pointer on Caspar. The England team deserve a result, a bunch of the fans deserve sweet f**k all except a slap.

Also find it ironic that since I was a kid my English friends have taken the piss out of how Italy play - strategic, possession based defensive play with counter attacks. Only time in my lifetime England do remotely well, they adopted this style. Is not a bad thing, it’s how you win but wow. When Italy do it, it’s boring. When England do it it’s smart. They even beat Denmark with a dive. Lmao. How the turntables : )
When Italy do it, it is boring.

When England do it, well it is still boring. It's just that none of that matters when your team are winning.

I don't care if England bore Italy into submission. If England are winning when that final whistle goes, my beer is going all over whoever is in front of me, and my top is coming off. A quid is going in the jukebox, and 'Vindaloo' is going on 3 times.

There is a big issue. Southgate.

As a defensive coach he didnt select enough strikers for the squad. He will be playing.

His pace could hurt Italy. ie win a penalty. Other than that i dont have a lot of hope he can help us win against Italy.

He just doesnt have enough composure when its really time to go in for the kill. He does have many good attributes but at the end of the day he is just a winger who has been converted into a centre forward. He doesnt have the killer instinct to take the few chances he will get.

It all depends on the formation. If we play a defensive team and Sterling gets 2 or 3 chances he wont score. The only way its going to work if hes in the team is if we attack them a lot. If we sit back and defend a lot he doesnt have a high enough hit rate to justify him being in the team.

Mature grown men need to be taking the pens, not some kids. How the hell do you sub off your CAPTAIN and replace him with a kid?

Pens are not about athleticism, theyre about composure. Something England obviously lack from the top down.

Pens are not about athleticism, theyre about composure. Something England obviously lack from the top down.
Kane wasn’t subbed off, he took the first penalty!

Mature grown men need to be taking the pens, not some kids. How the hell do you sub off your CAPTAIN and replace him with a kid?

My mistake, I thought Henderson was captain. My main point was , why didnt the grown men of England take the pens instead of the 3 that all missed ? Why didnt Sterling , Grealish or Stones have one ? Why take out Walker and Henderson. These are the veterans

The answer is who did well in training when there was no pressure vs who has been in big matches before and has experienced it, even if in defeat.

Why not let a man like Henderson get the chance redeem his past miss in front of his whole country ?

My point is why put 3 young , internationally inexperienced players in the biggest moment of the countries recent history? They were set up to fail, and now subject to abuse ( by their own "fans") because some grown ass men were too scared to say I WANT ONE !

Do you think Chiellini said " Nah, let the rook have one" ?

Yeah I get that, was just pointing out your glaring error. Henderson is Liverpool captain.

I agree. Penalties are about experience, not just pure skills. Italy veterans will always take the shot, when needed. You have to lead by example, and if a veteran misses, it's only fair that they take it on their shoulders instead of a young one.

But hey, game decisions are never easy. Mistakes were possibly made, but there is no reason to complain too much. Italy was better, in my opinion, and kept playing to win for the entire game. England scored a fantastic goal and decided to sleep for the entire game after it.

If Southgate brings on Rushford and sancho as specialist penalty takers and he picked sako then the fault lies with him. Grealsih said he would take one and wasn't picked.
I totally get what your saying but at the end of the day the buck stops with Southgate......
