So, 6 months ago the company I worked for went into administration (effectively bankruptcy) due to covid impact.
I had/have a work issued laptop. It's all going through an insolvency company and we've been told the laptops are not high enough value and as such they don't want them back.

So, I'd like to turn it into a spare.
Problem is it's locked down. On windows launch it tires to connect to the work server, which no longer exists. Won't allow a win roll-back or reformat.

Not many options in bios so suspect that's locked to some degree too.

I was thinking of trying a win 10 USB bootable install, but won't have another Windows key to use.

Also considered Ubuntu but then my wife and kids can't use it so trying to avoid that.

I'm out of the loop pc wise now.

    What would you do?

Suggestions or recommendations on a postcard please.

If you fail, blame someone else.

Its likely that the Windows 10 key is tied to your machine as an OEM key and that it'll automatically activate upon a fresh install. If not then I can share some alternatives with you.

If you're gonna mess around with the BIOS definitely first check that this laptop originally came out the box with win10 on it. I recently got into trouble trying to refurb a ACER laptop that originally had win8; where apparently microsoft did something that makes the laptops unable to boot without checking something on the HDD first. So if you try and upgrade the hard drive you gotta clone the original data, or at least the part that lets it boot lol. Not able to get alternate acer BIOS from any website either cos it's old hardware. Sucks cos its a touchscreen laptop really nice too lol.

I would make a boot USB or DVD and just wipe the hard drive in the installation process, shouldn't face any roadblocks doing that.

KMSpico app would be able to make the activation check go to your own address and then bounce and come back valid lol, you can get it from any torrent site. Works with like 2 clicks just a simple app to run. I guess you already know the win10 bootable is free but has the "please activate" message in the bottom corner. So that's one way to avoid this. You could simply pay for one of these generated license keys on a CD-Key reseller site, but i don't see why to pay a fraudster a fee when he used this same app to generate license numbers.

There's also guides online for how to edit the registry so the "please activate" message doesn't show, but in my experience that gets reset every time there's a windows update lol so you gotta do it all over again.

If the bios is locked so you can't change settings or boot order you can serch for lists of backdoor bios passwords online, most computers have that so can get into the bios and remove the password.
