Thread created on 15:16:11 - 01/03/18 (6 years ago)|Last replied 02:39:28 - 20/03/18 (6 years ago)How many of us have pulled up Netflix or Hulu, ready to watch a movie, only to be stuck for 30 minutes or more searching for the perfect movie to watch? Im sure we all do it, and as every one of us knows, its one of the most monotonous activities you can take part in.
Well, I watch at a bunch of Netflix/hulu movies every week, So I figure, I might as well put that knowledge to good use, and let other Tornizens benefit from my experiences, and hopefully, the experience of other movie buffs. Ive already asked a few people I know to be big time movie buffs to take part, and anyone who would like to add to the thread, please feel free.
My hope, is that this thread will help people decide on a movie to watch (or one they shouldn't bother with), so they don't have to waste precious time scrolling through the 1000s of titles, searching for the perfect movie. Ill update the thread as often as possible, and hopefully others will as well so we can come up with a comprehensive list of 100s of titles for people to choose from. Movie reviews will be posted in the following posts, and ill try to keep spoilers to an absolute minimum. -

Genre: Psychological Thriller
Personal Rating: 7
Review: As far as thrillers go, this meets all the criteria of a good one (Not great, but good). Shock, suspense, creepy setting, realistic plot, and realistic acting are all major selling points for this movie. There are some genuine moments of shock that get your heart racing, and the suspense level crescendos throughout the entire movie until peaking at the last 10 minutes. It can get a little boring at times, as there are gaps in between the few moments of shock, and its left up to your imagination as to what is actually going on until the final 10-15 minutes of this 94 minute long film. Along with that, the "bad guy/monster" is never seen in full, leaving you with a slight feeling of unfullfilment at the very end, which, depending on your preferences, that can be either good or bad. There is no formal resolution, and your left to wonder what will happen in the movies universe after the movie is over, unlike the classic way a comedy/tragedy style movie would end(which, as I said, can be good or bad depending on you as a person).
The Plot: A mother (Naomi) and her son (Logan) lose their Husband/Father in a freak accident, leaving them broke, and without many options. The Naomi's sister-inlaw offers to let Naomi and Logan live in her house in a remote mountain town while its up for sale. So, as the title is aptly named, the house is made available for prospective buyers to view during an open house, which is where the fun begins. Soon after, creepy things begin happening. Pictures being moved, weird sounds from the basement, and just a general feeling of uneasiness, leading the new residents to believe someone (or something) other than themselves are in the house.
To Watch or Not: Watch. For me personally, the nuggets of true shock, and the genuine feeling of suspense I had while watching and trying to figure out what was going on was well worth the watch. As I said, the movie can be slow, and the ending may turn people off because of the lack of resolution, but the believability of the film in its entirety, and the great acting/directing make for a psychological thriller that will definantly send you to bed feeling uneasy, and wanting to check your closets for monsters/killers -

Genre: Gore/Horror
Personal Rating: 7.5
Review: This, to me, is what horror is all about. Although it lacks in the storyline, and its totally unbelievable, the sheer amount of "Blood and Guts" gore, mixed with a creepy setting full of "Saw" style torture rooms, and "Human Centipede" style scenes of experimentation make this a great movie to watch. And of course, you get some slight glimpses a nudity, which, is something every great horror movie should have. This movie has about 10 minutes total in the beginning to get yourself ready, because the next 70 minutes is a nonstop onslaught of death, murder, and mayhem. If your looking for a horror movie with a great plot, this isn't the movie for you. But, if your looking to get out all your deepest, darkest urges, and your lust for blood, than this is the movie for you. Keep in mind though, that My rating doesn't reflect a movie that is a compilation of everything a good movie has, but rather the primal bloodlust and satisfaction you feel from watching almost 80 straight minutes of gore and destruction. This movie definitely will fulfill any "dark" urges you may have deep down inside, and let them come out and "feed" for the hour and a half you watch
Plot: A girl (Elaina) and her friends go to an ultra-exclusive, secret party in an undisclosed area of the city. Upon entering, they are immediately engulfed in music, and dancing bodies surrounding them. Elaina is separated from her friends, an taken away by our Masked Murderer, the villain of the movie, to his Hotel of Horrors to be tortured and eventually killed (or such is his plan). Arkam, a man who was a victim of the Masked Murderer, who was able to escape from our villain at the same time Elaina is taken, is promptly recruited by a team of mercenaries, hired by Elaina's rich father, to find and retrieve her before any harm can befall her. The rest of the movie is centered around Elaina being found, and hopefully returned safely, while everyone (Arkam, The Mercinaries, and Elaina) try to fight their way out of what looks to be certain death in the murderers Abandoned Hotel, turned H.H Holmes style hotel of death.
To Watch or Not: Watch. If your looking for a great story, or amazing acting, you need to look for a different movie. But if your goal, is to find a movie full of blood, guts, murder, and mayhem, this is your movie. The plot of the movie makes absolutely zero sense (aside from the the fact that someone was captures, and others are trying to get her back) the acting is sub-par, and the story is completely unbelievable. But the pure joy you get from watching heads explode, body parts being sewn together in Joseph Mengele style experiments, killer drug addict "zombies", ravenous dogs tearing people limb from limb, and just a general Creep factor, this movie is well worth the watch, and my 7.5 rating. Not only this, but the very last 5 minutes of this movie are SO satisfying to someone who just watched 80 minutes of death, that its worth watching the movie just for that -

Genre: Paranormal Horror
Personal Rating: 4
Review: As somebody who has now seen every Paranormal Activity film (Trust me, I was in no hurry), I can easily say, that this was the worst in the series. The Plot made no sense (A common theme in the series), especially in regards the the other films, aside from the few cutscenes which show you past events, and added things the the final film that added more questions than they answered. Not only that, but they lost a lot of what made the first few films good, in their depiction of "the paranormal" by giving it a face, rather than leaving it up to the imagination. A lot of what gave the first few films their credibility was lost on this film, which in my eyes, should have just never been created, or been made as part of a different series of films. The ONLY saving grace for this movie, is the fact that anyone who has seen the other films, will most likely want to watch this just to say they've seen them all, and even that isn't a great reason to watch it
Plot: A family of 2 and their daughter, move into a new house around Christmas. Soon after, a few relatives (The husbands brother and the wifes sister) come by to visit for a few weeks for various reasons. As the Husband and his Brother are unpacking old boxes of what were supposed to be "their fathers old porn stash" as they are settling into the home, they come across a box of old VHS tapes, and a old school VHS camera the side of a suitcase. Upon watching the films, they realize, that what they are watching isn't old pornos, but recordings of secretive rituals of some sort being carried out by 2 young girls. Like any sane person, they finish watching the few films, then decide to get high, and begin recording things on the old camera for fun. While using the camera, the family begins to see and feel weird things going on in their house, as their young daughter begins to become distant, and start talking to someone she calls "Toby". After a while of "Paranormal Activities" going on, the family calls in a priest ot bless the house and their family. Problems only get worse from there, so the family sets up cameras around the house to capture any and all activity they can, to try and figure out what is going on. From there, problems only get worse as they begin to realize, that a dark presence has taken a hold on their household, and their young daughter.
To Watch or Not: Not. Not even close for this semi fan of the series. This move is a big "NO" for anyone looking for anything remotely considered good on any level. I wouldn't even recommend this movie to others who have seen most or all of the Paranormal Activity series. There is absolutely no need to waste your time. The movie lacks depth, it isn't scary, hardly follows a common theme or story line with itself or the rest of the series... This is just a generally bad movie, and deffinantly not worth the hour and a half of time you will waste watching it -

Genre: Fantasty/Sci-Fi/Action
Personal Rating: 8.9
Review: Wow. First of all, let me say, Will Smith has the starring role in this film. That in and of itself is a major plus for almost any movie, but in this role, Smith really shines. The movie is set in a world, similar to ours (crime, drugs, gangs, dirty cops, good cops, racism, hatred, greed, class warfare, etc), with the addition of the element of magic and fantasy. Race and Wealth are what determines your role in life. Orcs are the lowest of the low, looked down upon by most of society, Humans, right in the middle, and Elves as the rich and powerful elite that live in their own sections of the city, away from the crime and gangs the rest of the lower class have to live with. This movie has a huge focus or racism, and lets the viewer feel what its like to be on the giving and receiving end, which only helps to pull you deeper into the story. It also has a big focus on class warfare, which mirrors real life almost perfectly. Its the kind of movie that pulls you into the story, but also makes you reflect on what it says about current society and the struggle between different races and classes of people to find a commonality between each other. And, another added bonus, the soundtrack is amazing. Deffinantly one of the better "Netflix Originals" ive seen.
Plot: In an alternate present, Humans live in uneasy peace with Orcs, Fairies, Elves, Centaurs, Dwarves, and other mythical creatures after fighting together to save the world 2000 years prior. In LA,veteran LAPD officer Daryl Ward (Will Smith) has been involuntarily partnered with Nick Jakoby, the nation's first orcish police officer. Jakoby is faced with prejudice by humans for his race, and by orcs for his position as an officer. In addition to the pushback from other officers, Ward is indifferant towards him after an incident where Ward was nearly killed by a shotgun-wielding orc and Jakoby had apparently let the assailant get away. Ward and Jakoby respond to a disturbance at what turns out to be a Shield of Light safe house; inside are a number of smoldering corpses, and the still-living torso of an elf woman embedded in a wall, indicating magic was used. They apprehend the lone unhurt survivor, a young elf named Tikka in possession of a legendary magic wand who apparently only speaks Elfish. As Jakoby puts it, a wand is like "a nuclear weapon that grants wishes", and can only be commanded by a 'Bright'a person with the rare ability to use magic. If a non-Bright touches a wand, they will explode from the raw magical power. Upon finding this wand, and Tikka, Ward and Jakoby go on a mission to not only get the wand into the safe hands of "The Feds", a specially trained government entity whos job is to find and procure magic before it can be used for harm, but to protect the world from the evil grip of "The Dark Lord", who is set to return if the magical wand is to be used for evil. This quest leads Ward, Jakoby, and Tikka not only on a battle against the forces of evil magic, but against the forces of evil people, gangs, and corrupt police, all while helping to fight against the idea of racism and class-ism along the way.
To Watch or Not: Watch. Deffinantly watch. Its got something for everyone, and its a modern day feel good movie. It has magic, fantasy, reality, action, comedy, love, hate, a great plot, great actors, great story line, great soundtrack. I cant say enough about this film. Its most definitely worth the watch. Its the rare movie that you become enveloped in the story, and genuinely feel close to the characters and their lives. I would highly recommend this to ANYONE -

Genre: Psycological Horror/ Sci-Fi
Personal rating: 7.5
Review: This movie is awesome for what it is. Theres one setting, one problem, no major action, no shocks or thrills, no "bad guy"... its very simplistic in presentation, but that's what makes this movie as good as it is. Your not going to watch this movie for scares or for a great story line full of twists and turns. This whole movie is about human nature, the desire for self preservation, and the internal struggles one would go through if they had to decide who to kill and why. This movie is an incarnation of society as a whole, and what most people value about life, and what they don't. Although the movie lacks the "horror" a normal horror film has, it has great actors who play their roles well, and a great plot, with an ending that leaves you wanting to know more, but in a good way.
Plot: 50 people wake up in a room, each standing in a specific spot on the floor, making a giant circle around a black orb in the center of the room. As these people begin to question where they are, and why they are here, they begin to hear an ominous, loud noise, which seems to be counting down to something. Zap. Someone standing in their spot on the floor is electrocuted to death. Zap. Somebody else tried to leave their spot on the floor and was electrocuted because of it. Now, the remaining 48 realize, that they are not only stuck in their spot or they die, but that they are able to control who the next person to die will be via a "vote" that they control by waving their hand in the direction of the person they want to die and clenching their fist. The 48 must pick and choose who dies next, based on everything and anything they deem to make the chosen person "unfit" to live, in an effort to save themselves in hope of salvation. They come to the conclusion only 1 can live, and continue to play the "game" as long as they can
To Watch or Not: Watch. Like i said in the review, if your looking for true horror, look elsewhere. That's not what this movie is about. This movie is all about human nature, and the reasoning (whether it makes sense or not) as to why one life is more or less valuable than another. Looking at the horror of human nature, self preservation, and societal norms breaking down is what makes this movie worthwhile, and deserving of not only a good review, but its deserving of your time to watch it. Definitely a thumbs up from this viewer, and most likely any else who watches it as well -

Review: Will update later. Overall cool movie, although the ending is lacking. But if your into aliens and Sci-Fi type things, youll really like this movie. Would have given a better rating, but The movie is slow, makes you think a bit more than I enjoy when watching a movie, and the ending is very cliche

I'm going to get in on this soon, I promise. I just got The Last Horror Movie (2003) and I plan on watching that in the next couple of days, and I'll draft up a good review for that. Looks pretty sick, and I'm a found-footage junkie.
