Well guys, the time has come.. (unless i've missed a previous post :

If you had to pick one or the other, which would it be and why?

I personally prefer Lord of the rings, just because the story is so deep, Tolkien created an actual universe, with several languages! There is just so much depth into middle earth as a whole and harry potter has nothing on this..

I personally think harry potter is very overrated..

    Lets hear it!

    Peace!

They are two different things and I like them both.

    Yes, I'm mental.

    No, it's okay.

I honestly cannot choose, they're both good in their own way.

I have to go with Lord of the Rings. I loved those movies and own the extended cut DVD set .. it's a must see. I tried to watch Harry Potter but just couldn't get into it. My girlfriend at the time had 2 young sons that loved the series but I always fell asleep watching any of the series with them. I know I'm kinda alone on this .. hell, even my mom likes Harry Potter movies, lol. But she didn't like the new prequel to HP .. but I'm not sure anyone did.

Lord of the Rings is far superior but both - HP is very decent in its own way; apples and oranges

    Harry Potter.

To read Potter is a superior writing style.

To watch Lord of the Rings in final epic battles wins but I can rewatch / reread Harry Potter films more than Lord of the Rings.

Both are great works but did feel a little bit disapointed in the books the fact that Fastesthorseisconcorde was bit of an unrealistic game changer in its speed and endurance. (and the fact they could have just rolled up a catapult and fired Frodo into Mordor) And the fact that this could in the films have been a great showcase of smaller people's talent over people no where near hobbit size (thought it was considered uncool to have white people blacken faces to play black parts - same thing). And the fact that it shows that despite my liking Jackson for Bad Taste when I saw it when much younger Jackson proved he did not believe in equal rights and pay for people in New Zealand even threatened them with "no other film will be shot here".

Another good film of wizardry and swords is Willow :)

Honestly, I wouldn't really count either of them to my favorites, but I guess HP since it's just more fun.

Harry Potter too often doesn't make a lot of sense tho and the overall story falls kinda flat.

Meanwhile LotR just isn't my kind of genre as high fantasy. I like urban fantasy a lot better.

Pretty much. If you compared LOTR with GoT, i would understand, but HP? (would still pick LOTR anyway)

^^^ I was about to say that

It never gets old when you find these types of comparison on the web, comparing completely different worlds with completely different set of rules is just juvenile (fun).

As per the thread, LotR for me, it has the most grounded set of rules of the 3 and the best application of "magic", 1st age: lots of magic, 2nd age: with the division between elves and men widening it started to wane for men and a recovering period for Elves, 3rd age: pretty much only already powerful beings could wield magic, 4th age: with the departure of Elves magic would pretty much leave with them.

PS, Targaryens are pretty much ASoIaF's Elves.

PS2, Sauron was never a flaming eye.

PS3, Any chapter of The Silmarillion blows away all 3 of these out of the water as far as scope and story.

PS4, HP better written than LotR?? Just as The Hobbit trilogy is better than LotR trilogy.

PS5, We might as well discuss Superman vs Goku (New thread anyone?)

PS6, I am doing an awful "PS" trolling :D

I watched the entire HP series and thought it was very over rated. even the ending was predictable and boring as hell imo. while there was characters I liked, none of them were main characters.

LOTR was superior in every way imo. Gandalf bugged me the most out of both though. what a sandbagger. lol

Disc World. Both answers to the question are just shit. One would have been solved in 10 minutrs by the eagles. The other is just crap. Even Two Flower had more magic... []

You know nothing, there isnt a cat in hells chance, the eagles would of got into Mordor, without being spotted by the eye of Sauron, thus meaning Sauron would of sent of army of nazgul to kill them, resulting in the one ring falling back into the hands of Sauron.

The only reason the eagles saved them, was because the ring had been destroyed and with this the Nazgul too.

    damn casuals ;)

When I read Harry Potter I enjoyed it immensely, maybe because I was just a dumb kid and now it's part of my childhood and I can't say anything bad about it. LOTR books are always smelly and somewhat boring, movies are definitely the way to go. They are both really good but I'd go with Lord of the Rings, because I'm a complete sucker for fantasy set in medieval (or around that) times. Just like Game of Thrones. If you liked LOTR try GoT as well.
