I've read every single manga in the Captain Underpants series, and when I found out they were coming out with an anime adaptation, I was pretty excited, considering how much love I had for the manga. The manga itself was very interesting, it had a lot of humor, but it's story was also very interesting and deep, not something you'd expect from a manga marketed towards children.

So, how does the Anime hold up? Not very well.
First, let's start with the characters. There is very little wrong with the characters themselves, they were pretty faithful recreations from the manga. George and Harold are comedic, Mr. Krupp is mean, Captain Underpants is just weird, Professor Poopypants is still angry about people disrespecting his name.
Only one thing about the characters actually bothers me, which is the lunch ladies. Actually, I should say Lunch Lady, since there's only one. In the manga, we know that there's about 4 or 5 of them, but in this one, there's only one. In the manga, the lunch ladies were unlikable, much like all the other teachers in the school. However, in the anime, the single lunch lady is Mr. Krupp's love interest. You'd be forgiven for not catching that detail in the manga, since it never happened. Mr. Krupp never had a love interest on any of the lunch ladies.
Not only that, but this lunch lady is actually LIKABLE. She was shy, nice, and a good cook, unlike the lunch ladies in the manga. So, as for the characters, I'll use a saying that my 4th grade teacher used once, "Close but no cigar".

As for the animation and art style, it stays faithful to the manga, as the art in the anime looks just like the art in the manga. The animation is quite crisp and fluid, unlike many other anime which belong in the trash. We need a third bomb.

The plot, however, does not remain faithful to the movie. If you want to avoid spoilers, you might want to skip this paragraph.
As far as how Captain Underpants came to be, it happened exactly how it did in the book, which is by a 3D-hypno ring. However, everything beyond that is just bullcrap. Dr. Diaper didn't make an appearance once, despite him being in the first manga, nor did the evil-alien-lunch ladies, not to mention the evil talking toilets, despite being in the second manga, were only seen in the last part of the movie. Professor Poopypants was in the fourth book, yet he was the first villain in the anime.
Also, if you've read the manga, you'd know that Captain Underpants gained his powers in the third manga, when he was getting eaten by a giant mutant dandelion, and George and Harold gave a carton of Super-power juice to Captain Underpants. In the anime, he got it from drinking some sort of weird radioactive water when he got eaten by a large toilet controlled by Professor Poopypants.
Also, no where in the manga did Professor Poopypants ever, EVER control a large toilet.

Overall, it wasn't that great of an anime. However, the manga is still a great option for those interested. The Captain Underpants saga has come to a close in 2016, so now is a great time to pick up the manga from your library, provided people still use libraries.
