I was rewatching the star trek remake and didn't really pick this up the first time. After Kirk & Spock have their fight on the bridge, Spock goes to McCoy and resigns. McCoy is a doctor on a star ship. Does he really have that much power to accept the resignation of the captain?

well it is sci fi :P and not real.

but i would imagine it being like the doctor telling him he should step down because he isnt capable of running the ship at the moment.
