    As the title says. What exactly IS Anime/Manga?
    AFAIK they are cartoons that people watch. Why do people watch them?
    Also, I have a long summer, so if I were 'hypothetically' speaking wanting to get into it. Where would I start?

    the simple answer ... anime are japanese cartoons

    as for why ... why does anyone like cartoons, tv series or movies? lots of different reasons
    one thing about anime, unlike western cartoons in general, is that there are shows directed at all sorts of different demographics

    where to start ? again not an easy question ... it all depends on what kind of stories you like, what genres, settings, etc ...

    i mostly go for fantasy and period anime but won't say no to a good echhi (usually comedy with lost of sexual innuendo but without crossing the line into cartoon porn), rom-com or the occasional slice-of-life show ... some people like giant robots and sci-fi, others may like comedy, horror, supernatural... you name it

    Good anime to start with, if you're a bit older, is usually something like Death Note or Black Lagoon.

    Anime = Japanese word for Animation. Animation as cartoons. But, Japan have focused in a style of specific cartoon that globally is called Anime. Something about stethics more than other thing.

    Like in America or Europe cartoons are related to animations made for kids, anime fans doesn't like anime to be called a cartoon, just because the assosiation of cartoon = childish. When isn't always like that.
    The majority of animes are not made for childs. Think about anime as an adult series, but made in this stethics. That's it.

    May you know there's its cathegories, the famous anime porn (hentai) and ecchi (almost porn, still sometimes NSFW) also mistery, fantasy, comedy, drama, science fiction, robots (or mecha, for the word Mechanics or Machines), adventure.

    I'd recommend you something heavy like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. It's very famous, simply, BECAUSE IT'S f**kING AWESOME. Some other popular and not so heavy animes are Sword Art Online. Or Kill La Kill.

    Japanese humor is very different from american or europe humour, so don't feel weird when you can't get a joke in an anime. Believe me 70% of the non-japanese audience neither does.

    If you want an anime for a long summer One Piece has over 700 episodes and ongoing so you know its a good one.
