No you can only gain points from races.

You can lose upgrades if you crash though, which would cost points to replace.

You need to read Baldr's racing FAQ in the racing forum. It's a very good guide that covers what you need to know to advance in racing.

So you don't get anything from custom races then
You can earn Racing Skill from custom races, but it’s recommended to not do that.
    Unless you can win something.

Is there anything you can do to get more racing skill off of a custom race? My faction mate and I have tried doing different classes, different cars. Some matchup seem to be more even, some more lopsided, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern in the skill gains. Our data set is very small, so I wanted to know if you had any observations from your much broader experience.

Well, this isn't a guide about skill... but my generally anecdotal experience:

Finishing first second or third helps. Recommend two player races for pure skill building.

Fast/long tracks appear to be the best - uptown, withdrawal, two islands, even speedway if you have time to start race after race.

    Docks still for your overnight.

Sorry, I should have specified, he spent his upgrades in E class and now has nothing in D class and has to grind through to catch up. So I figured I'd build my driving skill while helping catch up and maybe learn to understand the mechanics at the same time.

D class he just needs a BMW or Hummer. No grinding needed really.

I agree. Get one of those and grind out those dirt races and you'll have plenty of racing points in no time. Most don't even worry about dirt tracks or cars until at least class B, so you'll have the advantage on dirt tracks.

Yeahhh.. I knew all this already. unfortunately, trying to hit mudpit is in itself a grind, could start 20+ races in a row and not see it once.

i had a fully upgraded cosworth when i got in to A and that's what made me give up on racing. 1-3 points every 15 or so race attempts, with a fully maxed cosworth. i can't even imagine how bad the ratio would be in a stock car.

Should edit the guide to say, "Stuck in A class? Just sit in a mechanic shop for a year."

Glad you knew this already, but if your Cosworth is fully upgraded and you're getting 1-3 points every 15 races, you're doing it wrong.

A fully upgraded Cosworth (266 racing points - i.e. class A upgrades not class B upgrades) should be competitive at lower skill levels on all five dirt tracks and win most mudpit races unless your competition is also using a fully upgraded Cosworth.

The guide does note, in nice bold letters, that if you can go to one of those companies (i.e. mech shop, car dealer) to exchange job points for racing points that is an easier path, Baldr's guide notes those so I didn't go into a lot of detail there. I also point out you're in trouble if you reached class A with no points and don't have a Cosworth. I didn't have to do that, I hit A with maybe 150 points and went Ferrari per RD_'s guide for the overall performance, then built an LFA and NSX from there.

And a year is a gross exaggeration. A few weeks to jumpstart your upgrades is probably what you need, 28 racing points (from 140 job points - two weeks in a 10*) would get your Cosworth:

Strip Out (always!) - 1 point
    Rally Tires - 6 points
A rally gearbox (transmission, I'd probably go short ratio) - 10 points
    Group N Rally Suspension - 8 points
Maybe save the other three points towards the Nitrous Fuel upgrade, not sure any of the upgrades worth 3 points or less are that great (except Strip Out)

That gives your car the dirt specialty to capitalize on its already favorable dirt performance, you can make it up as you go at that point, just get the top upgrades for each item (no safety, including the safety upgrade hidden under engine) so you end up with 266 points for 45 upgrades.

I agree. A fully upgraded Cosworth should do well on all the dirt tracks early on in class A. If a person is getting 28 racing points in two weeks, it would only take 19 weeks to get 266 points and fully upgrade any class A car (not counting whatever points a person manages to win racing). So It's more like sit in a mechanic shop for 4 months.
