Today, we’ve updated the way racing skill is accumulated through racing, switching to a new system.
The old Racing Skill system used a steep logarithmic curve, causing skill gains to drop off sharply after level 20. This made it unrealistic for even power-users to ever naturally reach the cap of 100.
When the racing system was first introduced, there was no cap of 100 on Racing Skill—nor was it ever intended for anyone to reach such high levels. Originally, skill gains were never expected to go much beyond 20 or 25. It was only after additional skills were added to Torn that we decided to set the Racing Skill cap at 100 to keep things consistent, which has since become a target for many players. However, the rate of natural skill gains from racing was never adjusted to reflect this higher cap.
We’ve now replaced the Racing Skill gain system with a new version that boosts all gains, and features a smoother curve that tapers off more gradually. While reaching 100 Racing Skill remains a tremendous challenge requiring years of serious dedication, achieving the cap through natural methods is now a more realistic goal than before.
The following modifiers will apply bonuses to Racing Skill gains going forwards...
- The total length of a race: Completing longer races, like a full 100 laps, will earn you more Racing Skill than shorter events. However, the rate of increase isn't strictly linear, so you may want to experiment with different race lengths to find the most efficient balance between time and skill gained.
- Racing against other players: The more the competition, the greater the rewards for everyone involved. All participants benefit from racing together, and the skill gains increase as more players join the race - up to a maximum of 100 racers.
- Your placement within the race: Finishing in a higher position - such as first place - will earn you more Racing Skill than finishing lower down the rankings. The better your performance compared to other participants, the greater your reward, so striving for a top finish will always pay off.
- Official races: Racing in official races will provide double skill gain. This also includes official events with gold flairs, like the Ultimate Racing Tournament, Winter Rally, and Justice League.
We have also made changes to the TV Network's 10* Press Pass special. The racing skill gained when proccing that reward has been decreased from 0.5 to 0.25. However, we've also removed the 'map item reveal' reward which will make the others appear slightly more frequently.
