This game got a lot of stuff going on for it, so I decided I'd make a guide for all the guides you'll need to get going. I've helped many a faction-mate understand various concepts of this game, and have debated on making a guide of some sort to aid in my explaining. I decided to just make a guide of guides to show where I learned this information. This will (ideally) have a range of information from basic newbie knowledge to min-max ideals for the number crunchers, and be of use for players of all ages. I've included a basic breakdown of what each guide covers, as well as some good points from each. (I will probably add more guides as I find more useful ones through my time in torn)

If you know of a good guide that covers something that isn't listed here, comment the link to the thread and I'll check it out.

This was becoming quite the wall of text, so I split it up for easier readability.

Advanced Guides (Most people will learn a thing or two here)

Miscellaneous Guides (It's useful stuff to know, but perhaps not extremely important.)

    The Basics

Baldr's Basic Advice - Your bread and butter for starting torn. It covers a broad range of information, mainly for how to start off in torn. But it also has some useful other advice such how to keep money safe, how to make passive income, and more.
A must read for anyone and everyone
Another good one I've found that's more compact than baldr's guide is George_1000's New Player Tips, and still covers the gist of new player information.

    THIS IS FOR CRIMES 1.0
Crime Guide - Start to End - This is what you're gonna drink to wash down that bread and butter I mentioned earlier. Chock full of the how-to's and but-why's of increasing your natural nerve bar (AKA nnb). You don't have to read it all, just reference the middle section that lists out what crimes to do at what nnb. As stated in the guide, if you want to branch off to do merits, it's advised to do so at 45nnb as at that point you'll be at most crimes "success cap" and will have the best chance at succeeding. if you want to be on a PA team one day, just do arsons once at that point; DO NOT do hacking crimes because your nnb will essentially never progress while doing hackings. If you're aiming to be on a PA team, backtracking for crime merits is OK though as far as I know as it will just delay your nnb progress; not really set it back.
This makes raising your nnb to 60 a straightforward (but long) road.

    THIS IS FOR CRIMES 2.0
[Crimes 2.0] Search For Cash: An in-depth guide - Since crimes 2.0 came out, crimes are a lot more complex than "do crime A until X nnb, crime B until Y nnb...". As 2.0 crimes are still being released, there is yet to be a guide that depicts a nnb growth path as crimes 1.0 did, and I highly doubt a guide like that will be released until a few years after all the 2.0 crimes are released, if any at all. On that note, I did stumble upon a group of guides regarding crimes 2.0 that breaks it down on a complex level.
I've linked Emforus's guides for crimes 2.0; there is a separate guide for each 2.0 crime which is all linked in the first paragraph of each guide, and breaks down e v e r y t h i n g about the crime you could potentially wonder about. You can read the whole guide that pertains to the crime you're interested in and learn the complex ins-and-outs of the crime, or you can look over the top-half of the guide to just learn the basics of what to do and what to expect from each crime (how the crime works/progresses, key items you should have, critical fail results, etc.). Every guide is not yet linked in every guide, so you'll have to do some digging to find the one you're after.
Generally from what I know (I could be wrong), each crime's success rate is linked to that crime's specific skill, not your total nnb as was the case in crimes 1.0.

Three training "jumps" - This is your desert after eating such a hefty meal. A basic guide to understanding the three basic versions of happy jumping in game, that points you to detailed guides for each jump if you wanted to dive deeper. (Lollipop jumps are pretty worthless honestly, so just focus on doing choco jumps and happy jumps)
I will point out here, that as stated in this guide, daily choco jumps (24 hour cooldown with no faction voracity boost for chocolate happy) are only marginally worse than a weekly low-end happy jump using only 4DVD (idk why they didn't test with the normal 5 DVDs) and not being in a 10* AN (doubles DVD effects). This is a great alternative for boosting your stats without going broke, especially if you're able to get into a faction with 50% increased candy happy gains. Personally, when I was still within happy jump range I preferred to do daily choco jumps instead of shelling out for a weekly happy jump.
Training jumps cost money yes, but they're essential to get you out of the "low stat" region of torn. There are also great alternatives (choco jump) available.
P.S. Check this out if you're scared of OD'ing during a happy jump.

iribuya's Visual Guide To Flying -Flying is the first and easiest method of making money in the game. Aim for level 15 if you're new so you can gain access to flying. This is a straightforward guide for how to make money while flying (with pictures too, wow!). You can easily make 5m a day from flying with "normal" capacity (5 default + 10 PI airstrip + 10 faction + 4 suitcase = 29 capacity).
P.S. If you primarily fly for income, download TornPDA on your phone. It's enough to let you fly, buy, and return with minimal effort, and even has a one-push button to set your phone timer to when you're landing at your destination.

Adobi's guide to 200 merits in 200 days - Merits are an important part of torn, so here's an easy 200 for you to hunt for. Use merits to upgrade education reduction time to the max first, then most people will max out the bank interest for better passive income. Past those two, it's largely preference for what to upgrade next.

Tips for bettering your torn account:

I know this is a guide of guides, but I wanted to add my two cents. Most of these tips are things I wish I knew from day 1, and are aimed toward bettering your account (stats, nnb, etc) so may not apply for those who simply don't care about these things.

    • Aim to become self-sufficient in Torn. Don't settle for living off handouts. You can easily make enough to pay for max'd PI rent (1m a day) plus 3 xanax a day (round up to 2.7m) and an energy refill (round up to 1.3m). You'll at most need to make 5m a day under the 'optimal' torn lifestyle I just mentioned. Easily doable via flying. Add on some form of job payment. Supplement daily flying income with item-market-flipping. Or graphics. Or whatever it is you do for money. Just for the love of whatever god you believe in, don't try to make money in the casino.
    • Take 2 to 3 xanax every day as soon as you can afford it, and use the energy in the gym to train stats (~830k per xanax, easily affordable with casual flying). You will generally be taking a xanax as soon as you are able to once your drug cooldown is over, and immediately train that energy in the gym. You will forever regret not doing this earlier once you start. The only exception is if your stats are still in happy jump range (<400k in that stat, with 48 hour booster CD, and in a 10*AN). If this is you, you should be stacking that energy for a happy jump instead. You will only want to train with xanax when you're not planning on doing a happy jump (EX. can't afford it, or you're waiting on booster CD).
    • Don't forget about your refills. Energy refills should always be used daily on top of your 2-3 daily xanax, while nerve refills are optional and are more worthwhile when your faction has criminality upgrades (extra 50 or so nerve)
    • You can take 1 xanax a day and never have to rehab (unless you OD) if that's a concern. You could actually push this further and take 2 xanax for one day, then 1 xanax for six days and still have no addiction buildup.
    • Keep those cooldowns running. Drug, booster, and medical cooldowns should never be at 0 (always running/counting down). Take (ideally) xanax for your drug CD or work on your 50-of-each-drug merit if xanax is too expensive. Use beers if you're not planning on happy jumping to keep your booster cooldown going and supplement working on your nerve bar, or better yet use some FHCs/cans to further push your gym gains. Fill empty bloodbags for future use to make use of your med cooldown
    • Chaining is an important part for remaining in a good faction. Build a list of chain targets by saving the "easy to beat" mission targets you're assigned so that you're prepared for chain time (I like to use YATAs target list feature). These targets are assigned to you based on stats, and hence will yield good respect for beating them. You'll have to keep this list updated as you grow your stats however; replace old low respect targets with more recent high respect ones. Good faction members are prepared for chains with target lists. Excellent faction members have this list optimized for max respect gain. Be an excellent faction member guys; it's the least you can do for having amazing perks.
    • Do your missions as much as you can. You need those mission credits (for books, ammo, and most importantly weapon mods), and they're rather slow-coming (unless you work in a security firm which can make you jp-rich). DON'T fall into the trap of thinking that you should use the energy on training instead of on attack missions. I fell for that mistake and have ended up missing many "special deals" on weapon mods and a few decent books due to me not having a lot of credits. Don't worry about skipping missions every now and then as well, it doesn't hurt your trader reputation severely (I think). Personally I sometimes skip tree huggers (attack upwards of 10 specific people) and the one that makes you fly to SA to beat someone with a rifle (takes too much time).

Thanks for your time, I really hope this guide helps someone out. Or at least that someone finds it useful for attempting to centralize a bunch of guides I found to be important through my time in Torn :P

This is the end of the guide, so I guess here's a quick shameless plug for me being a trader

    Advanced Stuff

Fight better than a top 100 player- Do you want to grow your account into becoming a BAMF? This is what you read to know how to guide yourself to becoming a BAMF. Lots of info coming from a high level's perspective of "ideal" conditions of performing as a top player. If you strive to be strong, this is a solid read filled with tons of good info. Do take it with a grain of salt though, as this is primarily focused on end-game warring and stat building. However, there are good blurbs for learning about why things like weapon mods and merits into weapon mastery make a big difference.

    Efficient Training Guide for 2021
    - An advanced guide for gym gains. It's your preference if you want to stay balanced or if you want to skew stats in the way that is mentioned in this guide. (Balanced stats are easier to win fights with, but skewed stats will gain stats faster.)
IMO, you don't have to completely ignore that fourth stat as said to do in that guide, just decrease the ratio of your main stat and put that extra into the fourth stat (once it's around 1m then you can probably leave it there. It's mostly preference, but make sure to keep both special gyms unlocked by maintaining the ratio). The purpose of training in this manner is to make the most of the gym gains formula to eventually overtake others in stats so you can kick their ass (if you're both spending the same amount of energy training).

Training Gains Explained (and Training Calculator) - A good breakdown of an accurate-enough gym gain formula people have pieced together. Aside from the gains formula breakdown, there's a nifty training calculator you can use if you like crunching numbers (to get answers such as the next point below).
A quick rundown about how the gym gains formula works: Happy plays a big role when your stats are low. The more of x stat you have, the bigger your gains will be for x stat (exponential growth). This growth is capped out at 50m of that stat however. (IE you will see exponential stat growth until you hit 50m of that stat; from there it will turn into linear growth.) As of a recent update in August of 2022 there is no longer a "training soft cap" and people will see larger gains with larger stats. This doesn't really change the training formula nor general happy jump ranges however.

When to stop happy jumping? - This one isn't a guide, but is a screenshot of a bunch of numbers I crunched using a gym stat calculator (see above guide). It's a bit hard to read (sorry not sorry) but you can figure it out with a little thinking. Take this with a grain of salt because most people will not be this energy-efficient. The numbers I used for calculations are for extremely ideal conditions of 24 hours of natural energy use, a refill, and 3 xanax used within 24 hours. I've been told that under more realistic situations, it's good to keep happy jumping in a 10* AN with 48 hour booster CD until you have ~800k of a stat, but haven't had the time to check those numbers.
EDIT: I had to crunch some additional numbers and get a better estimate of happy-jump ranges, so I've updated the clicky link for this section with a new screenshot that contains an additional row for those of you who only use 2, 1, or even 0 xanax a day to train. This takes a bit of the guesswork out of your hands for finding out if a happy jump is a good idea for you, if you don't want to do the exact math yourself. It looks like for the average joe who doesn't use 3 xanax a day for training, happy jumps remain extremely effective past 400k stats. If the trend is remotely linear, my guess is that it'd be worthwhile to happy jump until 700k/800k stats while in a 10*AN, and maybe (very rough guess here) 300k/400k stats while not in a 10* AN (both scenarios assuming 48 hour booster CD and 9 DVD usage each jump) if you were to use only 2 xanax a day for training. If you used less xanax for your daily training, then your "is it worthwhile to happy jump at xxx stats" threshold would only go higher.

P.S. If you wanted to give it a crack and crunch your own numbers...the "bottom half" numbers for happy jump gains should be 99.9% correct in terms of gains-at-that-stat-amount. You should only need to adjust the top half "normal training calculations" numbers to a more realistic number.
For example, to get an accurate estimate of a "normal" person (10 hours/2 full bars of energy wasted, only 1 xan a day, no refill) take off 2 full bar of energy from natural regen's row's gains (multiply by 3 instead of 5) and 2 xanax from the next row (multiply by 1 instead of 3). Add the new numbers, then divide the 'premium/happy jump' number by the new 'natural gains' number for the new ratio.

This still applies even after they removed the 50m gym gain soft cap, as that only really affects people with billions of stats

A guide to rehab decay and addiction. 2021 update! - Breaks down addiction points and rehab decay very well. Understanding these two things are important for your torn life, especially once you start taking daily xanax. The main points of this is that rehab gets less effective the more you use it, which means it slowly becomes more expensive to rehab one xanax's worth of addiction points. Every time you take a drug, you gain an amount of addiction points (varies depending on your faction's addiction mitigation upgrade) and if you OD on a drug, you gain about 3x the addiction points from a single use of that drug. You lose addiction points naturally every day (about 1 xanax worth a day), and can also use some company specials like flower shops to remove some addiction points. But the best way to get rid of them is by rehabbing. Once you gain enough addiction points, you'll see a brain icon that says "Minor drug addiction -1% to battle stats"; the debuff increases as you gain more addiction points. It's good practice to go to fly for rehab once you have around -2% battlestats (hover over the brain icon that pops up once you have built up enough adiction), and to do max-1 rehabs (move the slider all the way to the right, then do one less rehab than that number) to help ease your long-term rehab decay, and also serves to not waste your natural addiction decay. Once you reach 4-5% battlestats debuff, you run the risk of being kicked out of your current education. An OD at -2% battlestats can push it to -4% and run that risk. Nothing sucks more than being kicked out of that 30-day long bachelor class 2 days before you finished.

If we want to get a bit more into it, this guide (Leave Last ONE Rehab Slot, or TWO, or THREE???) builds up on the concept of "rehabs are less effective the more you use them". Basically, you'll hit a point where max-1 rehabs will still waste some of that natural addiction decay, and you should instead start doing max-2 rehabs (then max-3, max-4, etc.). Generally, once you hit 750 rehabs you should start doing max-2 rehabs instead of max-1 as that means you've reached that threshold. Mawal1995 was nice enough to create this nifty spreadsheet (don't break it gdi) where you simply punch in your # of total rehabs done (look in your personal stats, under the drug tab), and it spits out the X in max-X number of rehabs that you should do (I hope that level of basic algebra didn't give you a stroke).

Stonks - This isn't a guide either but is a passive income ROI sheet that I stumbled upon (sorry idk who made it) that lists the "best" stock blocks to invest in. It's a good reference of what stocks payout compared to others. (Note that MCS is not an actual "money" payout; it's a payout is 100e each BB. It's dividend value is a rough estimate of how much energy you gain (100/200/300) converted into can prices or something.) General rule of thumb is to wait for the stock block to be at a low value when you decide to buy the block to maximize your profits should you decide to sell it in the future. But if you're holding onto it long-term as you should be, it won't be a problem if you buy it at a high price instead as stock prices should generally increase over time (tm). This has nothing to do with day-trading stocks for profit, which imo is a bad idea/hard to do nowdays after Ched realized what a money-printer it was.

Not-So-Quick Player Company Job Overview (UPDATED) - A pretty damn good guide that breaksdown all the player-owned companies in torn. Also has recommended 'ranges' of when you could find each company useful during your time in torn. Companies are important for a huge array of avenues of torn, not just for making money. Give it a read and find out what company would benefit you the most now, and in the future.
P.S. You're never committed to one company for any amount of time; feel free to swtich jobs when you need to, but give your director a heads up of about a week or two just as in real life, as suddenly leaving negatively impacts the company more than you'd expect.

Weapon mods guide - A guide for end-game when you want to min-max your Armalite/GAK with two good attachments. You unlock higher tier mods by first buying previous tier mods from the mission shop, so keep an eye out for the "special sales" on a mod you're after (basically reflex sights and lasers if you want just the "generic go-to" attachments. Flashlights seem good but are only work during the turn you use the weapon it's equipped to, so that may end up being a preference thing). Lists the price ranges of respective weapon mods (as the prices will vary when they appear, depending on Duke's mood), as well as their effects. I recommend only buying attachments you're interested in when they're on a "special sale" in the mission shop, as it will be a long time until said attachments will make a significant difference in your fights, so you may as well be effective when buying them.

    Misc. Guides

Knowledge is Power - Andyman's Torn Books Guide - You may come across a book during your time in torn. These books are insanely useful should you get the right one. This guide goes over how to make the most out of these books, because you only get to use them once each (save for the book that replicates the last used book's effect). Read this when you get a book to see how to make the most of it.

Guide: How to Start a Company - I highly advise against starting a company until you're very financially stable in-game, and have a lot of money to blow. It's got good information of what you should know before starting/owning your own company, as it's extremely more complicated than most people think. But I will list this here as I found it as a very helpful guide for showing me why I shouldn't start a company of my own (yet).

Targets from the AttackCentral! and Level Targeting List - Level 50-70 - Two lists that contain a metric ton of chain targets for you to use. Use these to find good chain targets when needed. Don't be the guy earning 1 respect per hit (factions hate those people, right after non-chainers). Find targets that are around 50-75% of your total stats in order to get a good fair fight (FF) multiplier (ideally you want between 2.0 and 3.0), and in turn earn good respect from the hit. Different factions may have different respect-per-hit requirements, but as a general goal to aim for, try to find targets that give at least 2 or more respect when 'leaving' them with no chain bonus active. This means that they'll give 3+ respect when you're actually chaining with a 1.5x+ respect multiplier. Note down the ones that are easy to beat (little to no damage on your end) on something like YATA's target list. Yes, this will take some trial-and-error hitting, but benefits your faction almost four times as much than if you were being a lazy chainer earning less than 1 respect per hit. And yes, you will have to find new targets periodically since fair fight/respect per hit is based on your stat total.
P.S. Take into consideration that you'll have -25% battle stats while on xanax, so you might struggle with some targets you originally had no issues with.

Guide list - Another guide filled with guides that I've only stumbled upon recently. It looks like it's just filled with every tutorial/guide in the tutorials & guides forum section, sorted by relevance/type. So if you're looking for something specific without the breakdown like I've done, then check out this list.

mug's Legendary Guide / Tier List - Debated on putting this under "advanced" but seeing as how any faction can get their hands on a ranked war cache easily, I'll slap it here. A very solid guide that not only outlines the known ranked war item bonuses, but rates them on a tier list for their amazing-ness. A nice read to find out what can potentially come out of a cache, weapon/armor wise.

Thank you so much for the practical instructions. New players really need this, to be able to get into the game of Torn very well. I would like to share this post with my faction members.

Ironically enough I made this for my faction, and decided that I made it well enough that it would be worthy of going on the tutorial forums :P

Definitely do drugs for 50 each merits especially when cant afford 2 or 3 xanax per day. Because when you are able to afford 3 xanax per day, you will never want to waste drugs cd on other drugs instead of xanax.

I got all my 50 drugs merits done when i could barely afford 1 xanax per day, or when i am focusing to grow my networth for 2b bank and few bb.

Because when you are able to afford 3 xanax per day, you will never want to waste drugs cd on other drugs instead of xanax. I got all my 50 drugs merits done when i could barely afford 1 xanax per day, or when i am focusing to grow my networth for 2b bank and few bb.
Very good point honestly, I haven't finished my drug merits and doubt I ever will because I have this exact mindset; I don't wanna waste that precious drug CD on anything but xanax at this point.

Added some target lists under misc. guides in light of the Halloween event. Also added a few more bullets under my tips's section.
