Junkyard Dog - An Analysis of a 5 Star Special
-
Thread created on 02:20:40 - 25/09/20 (6 years ago)|Last replied 06:53:08 - 22/01/26 (9 months ago)Junkyard Dog is a Special granted to 5* Mechanic shops that allows the player to spend 10 job points for a "random car." I had questions as to how "random" this truly was - were these pulls weighted in some way? Which cars were available? And ultimately, is using this special "worth it?" As such, I did 101 "pulls" - my way of referring to uses of the special, getting its nomenclature from the term used in gacha games - and recorded the results. I was pleasantly surprised.
1.) Is it worth it?
At first glance, it would appear that this special is worthless. 5 job points can be traded in for one Racing point. Racing points cannot be purchased with Torn currency; all cars can be.
However, many people who join a Mechanic Shop are doing so for racing merits, arguably the hardest of which to achieve is the "On Track" honor for achieving 2500 racing points. Assuming 269 points needed to outfit a car, this is enough to completely outfit 9 cars and some change. Those in a Mechanic Shop with at least 7 stars never lose car parts after crashing. The math is a little sketchy here (is an individual going to invest in safety, for example? How many cars do they really need to outfit to reach their goals?) but the point is the same - at some point a player in a Mechanic Shop is going to have more Racing points than they know what to do with, and thus spending job points on more is meaningless.
That said, the average amount of money that can be made if a player sells off all their cars isn't that great, with one notable exception I'll be covering in a moment.
2.) How weighted are the pulls?
In 101 pulls, I recieved 19 Class E cars, 24 Class D cars, 17 Class C cars, 23 Class B cars, and 18 class A cars. This suggests a rather even amount of weight. I expected to never pull a Bugatti Veyron, a class A car that is handed out as prizes for certian community races. I also expected to never recieve an Audi S3, a class C car believed to be acquired by certain Grand Theft Auto crimes. There were only 7 other vehicles I did not acquire through pulls, and it's difficult at this point to tell how many of these were just the numbers being against me; I acquired my only Hummer H3 (D Class) on my 89th pull, and an Aston Martin One-77 (A Class) on my 97th.
That said, I pulled two Sierra Cosworth (B Class), a vehicle prized for it's ability to handle dirt tracks and regularly sells for roughly $15 million.
The vehicle I acquired the most is a tie between the 7 Classic Mini (E Class) and 7 Volkswagen Beetle (D Class).

3.) How much cash will this special earn me?
If I look at the 101 pulls that I made, which include the 2 Sierra Cosworths, and we use the lowest market price listed when I grabbed the vehicles' worth September 21st, I would have made on average about $440k a day.
However, if we ignore the two days I acquired a Cosworth, my average worked out to a much more lackluster $150k a day.
Keep in mind as well this is an overall average; there were a number of days where the vehicle I acquired wasn't worth $10k! Those were always depressing days.
Conclusion: Junkyard Dog pretty evenly represents all of the cars that can be acquired in Torn, with a few notable exceptions. Further testing needs to be done to determine if the 7 cars I didn't pull (Fiat Punto, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Vuaxhall Astra GSI, Pontiac Firebird, TVR Sagaris & Mercedes SLR) can be acquired randomly. The Cosworth can be pulled. Ultimately, this is a Special for those looking to burn job points because they're in a Mechanic Shop, and not a solid money maker in it's own right.Last edited by Sethimothy on 02:27:56 - 25/09/20 (6 years ago) -

Pull 109 was a Honda Civic; 6 cars are not accounted for. Of note, that's 1 car in each class plus two in class E.
Pull 114 was a TVR Sagaris; 5 cars are not accounted for.Last edited by Sethimothy on 08:25:04 - 12/10/20 (6 years ago) -

You have exchanged 10 job points for a TVR Sagaris.
So, that means all B class cars can be unlocked. I suspect barring two specific examples (Audi S3, Bugatti) all cars can be acquired this way, but I'll be pulling until I've done 200 total to figure this out. -

You have exchanged 10 job points for a Fiat Punto.
This is a laughably bad car, but it's also the first time I've pulled the Fiat Punto with this job specialty. This was the 133rd pull in.
The 130th was another Cosworth, so I've got that going for me, I guess. -

I actually wanted to post that today I burned through some pulls, and my 146th pull was the Class C Pontiac Firebird, and the 149th was the Class D Honda Accord. To date, this leave 3 cars I'm uncertain I can get through this job ability - no word yet on the Vauxhall vehicles (Corsa or Astra GSI) or the Mercedes SLR.
Once I reach 200 pulls, I'll probably wrap this up and present it in a steadier fashion. -
