1.0 Mechanics are in the pinned post below, and will soon be obsolete.

Here is a sheet to help you!

    Mugging 2.0

    Mugging

Mugging is now a (sort of) "Flat Rate" - this means that the percentage of someones cash in hand that you mug is not dependent on the amount they are holding. You will steal a "base" percentage which is then modified in two ways; with merit upgrades you can increase the amount by up to 50% (5% per upgrade) and an RNG / Multi-Dice Roll will increase the amount you roll by up to 100% (with lower bonuses statistically favourable).

    Without any merits
    With all merits (+50%)
    5.0% - 10.0%
    7.5% - 15.0%

With full merits, a mug of between 8-11% here would be most common according to Chedburn.

Percentages will be rounded to 2 decimal places.

    Protection

Mug protection as you typically know it does not exist any longer. The idea behind mug protection was always to stop an offline user mercilessly being revive-mugged and losing 100% of their cash on hand after sales, faction handouts, etc, rather than to allow active users to walk around the city with silly amounts of money on hand at zero risk.

If you are mugged, whatever remains in your wallet will now be "protected". Over the course of the next 12 hours this protection will decrease linearly to $0. If you interact with the remaining money in your wallet, by which I mean you reduce the amount in your wallet below your currently protected amount, your mug protection will be reset to this amount (along with the 12 hour timer). Any subsequent mugs will also fully reset your mug protection to the amount left on hand. Below I will outline some scenarios to help understand exactly what is being said. For simplicity I will assume every mug is 10%, and events occur immediately unless explicitly stated.

    Scenario 1

    1. You are holding $100m and get mugged. You now have $90m remaining and thus $90m protection in this instant.
    2. After 6 hours, you have $45m protection. If you are still holding $90m, $45m of this will be unprotected.

    Scenario 2

    1. You are holding $100m and get mugged by a friend, who sends the $10m back.
    2. You are holding $100m and because you have $90m protection, $10m is unprotected.
** This is the sort of thing you can look to do if banking large sums of cash in Caymans. While "full protection" is not possible you can limit potential losses. **

    Scenario 3

    1. You are holding $100m and get mugged by a friend, who sends the $10m back.
    2. You decide to bank (deposit in vault, trade, company, faction, purchase items/stock etc) all $100m and then withdraw it again.
    3. You are holding $100m and have $0 protection because you reduced the amount of money in your wallet to $0. Someone may now mug you again and receive the full amount possible.
** This is the sort of thing that worked under the previous system, but can no longer be done. **

    Scenario 4

    1. You are buy-mugged. A player buys $500m worth of items and then mugs you, leaving you with $450m on hand and thus $450m protection.
    2. You bank the remaining $450m but do not close your bazaar. Another player buys $450m worth of items and mugs you. They receive a full mug of $45m because you have $0 protection.

    Scenario 5

    1. You are buy-mugged. A player buys $500m worth of items and then mugs you, leaving you with $450m on hand and $450m protection.
    2. Another player then buys $450m worth of items, and just before they are able to mug you you bank $450m. The mugger receives $0, as you still have $450m worth of protection.

    NOW OBSOLETE.

One might call it severe boredom, or intellectual curiosity, or a mix of the two. I spent the last couple of weeks spending lots of energy, time and money working out exactly how mugging works. Mainly because I was never convinced that the quoted '2 hour full protection' was true. So here it is, everything I've learned. It's in tutorial and guides mainly cause I don't really know where else it might go, and hey it may help some of you.

    Mugging (1.0) Sheet

Have made it a little more friendly. In the 'Protection' tab, simply enter the amount you were mugged for in B3 and paste the exact timestamp of the protection attack in C3, and it'll show you your protection over the course of the following 15 hours.

In the 'Mug Calculator' tab, enter the amount you believe your target to have on hand in B3 and the number of merits upgrades in mugging you have in C3, and the expected mug will be displayed.

Extras tab can be ignored for a bit, still working on stuff.

    Mugging

The amount you will mug from someone depends on the amount of cash they are holding, and your mugging merits. In this thread I will pretty much expressing things in terms of someone with 0/10 merit upgrades for mugging - although there will be a small section about those too. The quoted percentages for mugging are given as the following table:

    Target CashMug Percentage
    $1020.70%
    $10018.39%
    $1,00016.09%
    $10,00013.79%
    $100,00011.49%
    $1,000,0009.18%
    $10,000,0006.88%
    $100,000,0004.58%
    $1,000,000,0002.28%
    $10,000,000,0001.00%

which while correct doesn't paint the full picture.

The exact equation that calculates how much you will mug from someone is given by:

    y = x * ROUND[ (-ln(x) + 23), 2d.p.] / 100 when x is LESS than $3,584,912,846
    = x / 100 when x is GREATER than $3,584,912,846

    where
x is cash in hand and y is the amount mugged. This is illustrated in Fig. 1.

The rounding in the equation leads to a bit of funkiness - the trend oscillates and hence there are points at which you may mug more from someone when they have less on hand. This also means that working backwards (i.e. calculating cash on hand from amount mugged) is all but impossible (I have done my best though! My calculator is reasonably accurate but can never be completely precise below the 1% limit).

    Protection (Pt. 1)

When you are mugged, you are protected for the amount you had on hand at the time for 1 hour. After this, your protection will decay at a linear rate - 0.002% of the original protection amount becomes part of the "available mug pool" per second. Protection is fully worn off after 14 hours, 53 minutes. Some people like tables, so hopefully the following is clear:

I have also made a calculator to work out exactly how much someone may mug off you based on your original protection and the time elapsed since. Subsequent mugs after protection, although only mug from the "available pool", mug a percentage that is calculated using the total cash on hand.

    Example 1

Let's say you mug protect someone for $4,000,000,000. After 3 hours, you mug protect them again while they hold the same amount. The available pool is currently at $576,000,000, however when you mug this second time it will use the $4,000,000,000 on hand to calculate that you may mug 1% of the pool, meaning this second mug will be for $5,760,000.

    Example 2

Let's say you mug protect someone for $3,000,000,000. After 3 hours, you mug them while they're now holding $2,750,000,000. The available pool is $432,000,000 - ($3,000,000,000 - $2,750,000,000) = $182,000,000. When you mug a second time, it will use the $2,750,000,000 on hand to calculate that you will mug 1.27% of the pool, for $2,311,400.

    Protection (Pt. 2)

You can not renew mug protection by mugging someone while they hold the same amount they did for the first protection mug. For example, if you hold $3b to be protected, and then do the same thing 3 hours later, you will not have $3b mug protection from that point. The second mug will only start protection on the available pool.

    Example 3

Let's say you mug protect someone for $10,000,000,000. After 3 hours you mug them while they hold the same amount. Protection will be as follows:

    Mugging Merit Upgrades

Each merit upgrade that is placed in the mugging slot will increase your mugging by 10% (additive) up to 100%. So if you have 3/10 ticks along the mugging branch, a 1% mug becomes a 1.3% mug. If you have 10/10 your mug will be double that of a mug with 0/10 upgrades. It is important to note, however, that there is also rounding applied in the calculations here. The equation above may in fact be modified as follows:

    y = x * ROUND[ ((-ln(x) + 23)*(1 + z/10)), 2d.p. ] / 100 when x is LESS than $3,584,912,846
    = x * (1 + z/10) / 100 when x is GREATER than $3,584,912,846

where z is the number of merit upgrades invested in mugging.

Thanks for reading! If you have any queries or criticism posting here or mailing me is welcome :)

Huge thank you to Chain Reaction members helping me out with collecting the data for this guide, too.

Haha I was actually about to post a guide on mugging mechanics tomorrow (was doing a trial run within my faction to get some feedback), but I guess you beat me to it. Yours is certainly formatted better though. :P

    As always, nice guide!

Nice guide. I won't use it, but I imagine some traders will.  I'll certainly post a link then wasting my time typing all that out though if anyone asks :). I speculated this was coming sooner.

Very useful. Not that i mug much nowadays, but in theory. :)

Well done on cracking the formula. I thought the protected amount drops faster in the beginning, but i was probably fooled by the fact that the percentage drops so radically when the muggable amount increases.

I guess I still don't understand the rounding part.  Why can't you just represent it using the formula with no rounding?

You realize the sun don't go down
