New Player Social SurvivalHey there new player! Welcome to Torn City, and congratulations on finding what will be the most important area of the city for you in the days and weeks and years to come: the priceless Tutorials and Guides Forum. Here is where you’ll find a treasure trove of information covering every aspect of the game. Veteran and near-professional level players have spent countless amounts of time and energy creating these guides to share their hard-earned knowledge gained from years of experience, so don’t pass up the opportunity to learn all the tricks and trades of the best in the business! There are plenty of guides covering all aspects of technical gameplay and strategy for beginners, so I recommend you read through as many as you can from this list. The purpose of this guide, however, is to help you navigate some of the social aspects of the community.Essentially you have just become a citizen of a unique society with an equally distinct culture, complete with all of the idiosyncrasies and customs you’d find in any foreign nation. It’s important for you to get an idea of some basic guidelines for the norms of social conduct in order to avoid any unnecessary problems as you start out.As we go through various points, I’ll also include some tips on how to avoid other common problems typically faced by new players. So let’s get started!Establishing Yourself in the Game
The first two things you’re going to want to do are to start generating an income and to start making connections with other players. Let’s look at how to go about both of those.
- Making Connections- one of the most beneficial decisions you can make early on is to find and join a faction that is friendly towards new players and run by older players. This is an excellent way of finding mentors to help guide you through the game.
- DO- Write a few sentences in your faction application outlining your goals as well as what you are hoping to gain by joining.
- DON’T- Apply to the first faction you see- read through the faction recruitment forum and maybe talk with some existing members or leadership to make sure it will be a good fit for you
- DO- Ask questions about how to improve as a player and contribute as a faction member
- DON’T- Ask for material or monetary handouts
- DO- Give your new faction a chance by trying to fit in and get along with your faction members respectfully
- DON’T- Quit and join different factions frequently- joining a faction is a commitment, and by accepting you as a new player your faction is being generous by offering positions to players who they know can’t contribute as much as older players
- Generating an Income- You’ll read about how to start making money in some of the other guides, but let’s talk about how to handle the social aspects of doing so.
- DO- Advertise what you are selling in trade chat and in the trade forums
- DON’T- Ask for handouts or beg
- DO- Try to use at least some semblance of reasonable grammar and spelling- people will take you more seriously if you do so.
- DON’T- Spam the chat with the same message or advertisement over and over or in all capital letters
- DO- Be careful who you do business with- before making a deal, check the other player’s friend to enemy ratio on their profile and see if they have their own trade thread with plenty of positive reviews (list of reliable traders) (trader blacklist)
- DON’T- Agree to a deal without using the trading system- if you send someone money directly and they don’t hold up their end of the deal, yes they did scam you but it was an entirely avoidable situation and you’re at fault for not trading safely. Nobody will sympathize with you for being taken advantage of like that when the trading system exists for this very reason.
- DO- If you are scammed, just let it go. Torn is a crime-based game, you need to expect that sort of behavior because it’s part of the game. Just learn from the experience and move on.
- DON’T- Complain in chat or on the forums about being scammed or try to get revenge on the scammer- players have very little tolerance for such childish reactions and you will be putting a target on yourself as an annoyance.
- DO- Advertise what you are selling in trade chat and in the trade forums
Common Conflicts- Mugging- this is a central aspect of the game and a legitimate money-making strategy. You will be mugged. You will be mugged a lot. You have a choice to either let it offend you and essentially be throwing a tantrum for an audience of zero, or you can take appropriate steps to protect your money (methods are discussed in multiple other guides) and accept periodic loss from mugging as inevitable.
- DO- Use methods to hide/protect your money or get mug protection when actively trading so that you keep your losses to a minimum
- DON’T- Complain about buy-muggers on chat or in the forums- the outcome will be the same as if you were complaining about a scammer or asking for handouts (it won’t involve sympathy)
- DO- Use methods to hide/protect your money or get mug protection when actively trading so that you keep your losses to a minimum
- Bounties- one common source of conflict is the never-ending wars of bounties between players having a dispute. This is something you should avoid because it will just get in the way of you being productive and it’s a childish cycle to get stuck in.
- DO- Try to resolve a conflict with another player through discussion, negotiation and compromise. If they are unreceptive, then simply stop interacting with them.
- DON’T- Use bountying as revenge against someone- that will just kick off a nonstop cycle of you both bountying each other with no end or resolution in sight.
- DO- Ignore any bounties that may be placed on you by some immature player trying to get a rise out of you- focus on being a successful player and don’t be sidetracked by a schoolyard scuffle.
- DON’T- Complain about bounties in chat or forums- by now you can see the pattern of what happens when you try to do that.
- DO- Try to resolve a conflict with another player through discussion, negotiation and compromise. If they are unreceptive, then simply stop interacting with them.
Main Points to Remember- DO- Let things go. Move on easily. Learn from your mistakes.
- DON’T- hold grudges or get involved in drawn-out stupid conflicts
- DO- Feel free to post questions in forums
- DON’T- EVER ask for handouts or complain about a scammer, buy-mugger or bounty war in chat or trade. That’s just asking for trouble.
- DO- Reasonable use of proper spelling and grammar will lead to people taking you more seriously in your endeavors.

Posted on 09:52:36 - 24/05/18 (8 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkCouple more things I would add from the few days I've been here and what has been advised to me:
1)Don't post on Global
2)If it sounds to be too good to be true it probably is e.g someone buying a DP for 50m
3)To an extent the same things can be said about companies about not company hopping as much
4)Find a trusted trader which means it is easier to sell things with a very low risk of buy mugging or scamming
5)Make sure you post on the correct sub forum e.g posting a trading thread on GD is not correct -

Since I don't want them to get bountied.
And I suck at not getting bountied so they probably shouldn't take advice from me.

Posted on 02:47:59 - 09/06/18 (8 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkWell darn! Don't join different factions and get to know different styles of gameplay and players?
Knew I was failing somewhere. And all this time I thought my problem was not investing any spare money early on for two weeks at a time.
- been refused from one faction from memory in all my Torn life and that faction folded shortly after anyway.
Otherwise sound advice on being very sensible ( and boring but boring players are 'successful' so it's all good).
Blacklisted trader threads...do you want to hold hands with newbies too?

Posted on 16:43:12 - 09/06/18 (8 years ago)Post link copied to clipboard Copy post linkIt depends.
I played unconventionally and came through with various experiences many players miss out on.
It made me stats wise weaker but a player that has done more than a typical faction soldier.
Interesting individuals come from varied gameplay.
If people want to play corporate farm boy up to them if others want to play kamikaze mutants up to them.
It's a nice little guide for a certain type of player. -
