Last Updated: February 20th, 2018 - This update only shows the new status of company popularity. It has not incorporated the newest companies added into the spreadsheets or newly added perks. Spelling corrections also made throughout the post.

This guide does not cover Jobs, only companies.

Are you thinking of joining a company?
The first thing you'll want to know is what specials companies offer. For a snapshot of all company specials, Document 1 below. The second thing you'll need to know is if you have the working stats to join your preferred company type. Document 3 is an excellent source for helping you determine this quickly.

Are you thinking of starting a company?
You'll probably find Document 2 to be the most useful and direct information for determining which company to start. However, Document 3 will give you an idea of the work stats your players will need. This is important to know as higher stat players will typically demand higher daily pay, especially in a startup company.

    Google Documents

Document 1: Company Special Comparison Only.

Document 2: Above + Startup Cost, Starting Employees, Total Positions.

Document 3: Above + All Positions, Required Work Stats, Daily Work Stat Gains.

    COMPANY STARTUP POPULARITY
The information in this section will change over time.
Accurate as of July 7, 2015
SEE FEBRUARY 20th, 2018 UPDATE FOLLOWING THE JULY 7, 2015 INFORMATION

Total player companies as of July 7, 2015: 2948

This graph is showing how many companies of each type there are. In other words, startup popularity. It does not show the company types that make up less than 1% of the total. The percents above are based on 2763 properties instead of 2948.

The graph is not a reflection of employee popularity. However you could extrapolate that employees are typically looking for the same company specials as directors.

The companies in the right column make up 28.8% of the company types in the game, but their combined total only equates to 6.28% of the companies in the game.

    Under 30 Companies: Unpopular
    - More difficult to attract employees.
    - Less competition for gaining more stars.
    - Resale of company may be difficult without high stars.

    30-60 Companies: Average
    - Employees can be attracted with a little effort.
    - Competition is average for earning stars.
    - Decent resale value, but selling may take time.

    70+ Companies: Very Popular
    - High stars can be very picky with employees.
    - Low stars will need to be competitive with wages.
    - Competition extremely high for earning stars.
    - Have the highest resale value.

The above is a generalization. Clearly a Restaurant can not be directly compared to a Sweet Shop. However, this should give a general idea of what to expect in each category. It should also be noted that the majority of companies in the top 10 require high working stats to join.

COMPANY STARTUP POPULARITY FEBRUARY 20th, 2018 UPDATE

    Under 40 Companies: Unpopular

    - May represent new company options.

    40-200 Companies: Moderate - Average

    STAR RATINGS

Ratings are only updated on Sunday at approximately 5:00PM, TCT.

Ratings are based on two major factors:

    1. How high your weekly profit is in comparison to other competing companies.

    2. Your company's experience, which grows on a daily basis.

For most company Types between 20-50% could hold the highest star rating. More popular companies like Sweet Shops and Oil Rigs can expect to only have 20-25% maintaining 10 stars.

Less popular companies Types, for instance a Toy Shop, have a much better chance to gain 10 stars.

Specials only exist at the following star levels: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10.
    There are no specials gained at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 9 stars.
New companies begin with no stars and companies can go down in star rating.

A company will be destroyed if there are no funds to maintain it's expenses.

Each day employees earn 1 job point per company star regardless of the company type.

Accurate as of July 9, 2015

    Currently Missing Specials

    5*: Furniture Store, Gas Station.
7*: Firework Stand, Car Dealership, Software Corporation, Theater, Television Network.
    10*: Firework Stand, Amusement Park.

If any of these specials appear for your company as their feature is implemented, please notify me of the change and what the special is so I can update, thank you.

This is a brief synopsis of what each company Type specializes in.

10* Specials are usually the focus for strategy, but are not available in all companies. Therefore the above strategy summaries are based on the majority of specials which may or may not include a 10* special.

Please let me know what the new specials are in companies as they appear, or changes to existing specials as I do plan to update these eventually. - Comment, Feb 20th, 2018.

    This's so freakin AWESOME SPADES!!

I guess it might be usefull if u add how many job point earned for each star rank in every company. coz why? probably this'll be some strategic way for each person to do something else after some milestone reached.

Without directing every company at all star levels, I have no way to get this information unless people volunteer it.

That being said, it is feasible to assume the obtainable daily work stats get higher as you go up in company startup costs. This holds true for employees as can be seen in Document 3.

Based on other feedback I added a section specificly about how stars are earned, which is obtained straight from Chedburn's comments.

good info - thanks a lot.

relative comparison of stat gains and average income of top 5 companies for each company type would have been nice. But maybe it is asking for too much!

You are asking too much haha. Actually what do we consider top 5 companies? Top 5 stats? Top 5 income? Or top 5 most popular?

    Yes..I agree -:).
Top 5 is vague - what I was thinking was the top 5 10* income being earned by companies in each type of company.

Also I was looking at the total number of companies of each type at this point of time - for example, meat has something like total 5-6 companies......but maybe some API or something can be developed to extract this data automatically.

Also say, someone wants to join a company for education bonus - then can join hair salon(7* +) or fitness centre. But the daily stat gains in fitness centre is better - so joining a same lvl fitness centre might be better.

But as I said - everyone has different needs and it is asking for too much - no harm in letting the player figure it out himself.

Yeah, I think the spread sheets currently make it pretty easy for people to decide what company they might want to join, or might want to run. If someone is too lazy to sort through the information displyed like this, they would make a terrible director in my opinion, and are probably not that hardcore about their character for it to matter that much as an employee.

SPADES, would you be willing to write up a tips for folks who want to start up a company? Maybe it could be in this guide or a separate one?

Folks ask alot about tips and it would be nice to have a guide where we can just direct them to.

I would, but as someone that doesn't run companies I think I'm not the best choice. Also between the missions guide, real life, and building a Torn fan game, I don't really have time unfortuantly.
