    Good morning all,

Over the weekend, I’ve been closely following the discussions around swear filters and whether they’re still a good fit for Torn and can see there is a large community consensus for change:

    https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=2&t=16557086&b=0&a=0

I’ve also shared my stance in previous conversations:

    https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=2&t=16534625&b=0&a=0&start=120&to=26928048

    3146e5ae-9942-444b-93f8-f9efefec1ab0-148747.png

Ched and I have been discussing this topic in detail. While we are responsible for maintaining Torn’s overall direction and ensuring things don't drift too far off course, we take community feedback seriously and respect the general consensus.

Over the years, we’ve adjusted our approach where needed, whether that's being stricter on issues like harassment, or updating filters as language evolves. We’ve added terms as new slurs emerge, and removed others as meanings shift or are reclaimed. So we’re not opposed to change where it makes sense.

With that in mind, I wanted to put together a more formal poll. While I have a reasonable idea of where sentiment may land, this is a good opportunity to share our perspective and explain how we might approach things going forward.

    F**k.

To be clear, both Ched and I are cautious about introducing changes that could make social areas more toxic. My long-standing view has been that filtering helps place a ceiling on that toxicity. I’ve expanded on this previously here:

    https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=19&t=16174460&b=0&a=0&start=0&to=20578233

    5b19d7a1-b57a-489c-8ccf-69654a51c0ee-148747.png

Personally, I don't believe Torn gains much from removing this filter, but we are open to revisiting older systems if they no longer fit and feel out-dated compared to our stance from so many years ago. I certainly don't think we should be of the mindset to keep things as they are just purely on the viewpoint of "it has always been that way", and should always take a more measured approach based on what is best for Torn and the community.

    Ched shares a similar perspective:

Personally I don't really like seeing the word, it feels grubby and unintelligent. Immature, something young teenagers say. I don't like the idea of the social areas devolving into basically kids swearing at each other, I feel like the filtering does quite a lot to stem that - encouraging people to be a little bit smarter with their language. But the word was probably a lot worse 10+ years ago, and now maybe the rule is outdated - so all in all, I'm open to a change. - Chedburn

I’ve also spoken with senior staff, who raised concerns that removing the filter could lead to a noticeable increase in general hostility, at least initially, while the novelty wears off.

On a practical note, lifting the filter would also reduce some moderation workload, particularly around manually removing unfiltered instances from images.

To clarify the scope: the only word currently under consideration is “f**k.” Other terms, such as stronger profanity, e.g. c**t, racial or homophobic slurs, s***y l**m and similar language, will remain filtered. There are no plans to revisit those.

That said, if we do trial a change and find that toxicity or negativity rises beyond a level we’re comfortable with, we will review the decision and tighten things back up. This wouldn’t be a one-way change it would be monitored closely and adjusted if needed.

So, I've added a poll, let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks all.

I was a little surprised at how many people did not actually want this - but it appears there is a clear majority who do.

I have obviously left racial slurs, those will never be unbanned, I also hear where people were saying "c**t" is a cultural thing for some in terms of its offensiveness - I don't necessarily agree there I think you're just being c**ts - and feel it is still slightly harsher than we would want to unfilter, but perhaps in the future.

However, for f**k, we feel it is time to let this go. We reserve the right to re-add such things in the future should people clearly be assholes.

People with past verbal warnings for unfiltered f**ks can consider those irrelevant.

I have removed this from the filter Let me be the first to say.

    Fuck.

Someone suggested it in the other post about being able to toggle it, still think thats a great idea, toggle all swearing. I'm personally not offended by any words but I get how it can distress others

This isn't the option we'll be considering nor is it particularly practical.

I can very easily adjust the filter, I can't as easily get the entire forums, chats and social areas completely redesigned and re-intergrated with such a system. Anyone saying it's just an easy change has no clue there at all, it would involve new systems, database changes, UI changes, system load and checks across an array of different areas that don't utilize the same system.

As the incredibly unhelpful and irrelevant comment above states "how about a new crime", well... if you want us to delay things further and pull devs away to create such a system... sure... maybe we can get that to you in a year... but that's not what I'm interested in doing or discussing nor do I think it's what people actually want.

If "f**k" gets uncensored, will there be limits to appropriate usage?

Pre-post-edit: I was about to actually write an offensive demonstration of how the word could be used, but it goes beyond my line by some way...

I wouldn't see any need to change things beyond how we treat it already.

Someone saying "f**k you" isn't moderated, so neither would an unfiltered variant.

Someone spamming "f**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**kf**k" isn't moderated as obscenity, so nor would the unfiltered variant, but it is certainly within scope to moderate it as spamming as we could already do with it filtered.

Someone adding additional vulgarity or slurs could be treated as obscenity, same as it would with "f**k" being filtered or not - the issue at that point isn't the f**k or not.

They removed the sandy Ioam filter and I havent seen a rise in its usage....

In seriousness: I do not believe removing the filter from f**k will increase in its usage in the long term, those using it already f**king use it and leave it f**king censored and the meaning still gets across the only thing that will change is that it will be f**king visible rather than showing as asterisks. I do think there would be a benefit in showing the first and last letters at the very least also in DM's... to not confuse 6 letter censored words for example.

when you are reading someones posts with a censored word it doesnt censor it in your mind whilst reading it right? so in my opinion its not going to actually make a difference censored or not. The only thing it will do is make a problem for karens to pick at.

I feel like F**k is more of a relaxed term too now, it doesn't have much severity and is also used more commonly as an exclamation too.

I think the filter is not implemented the most consistently. The big one being "retard". In a hypothetical where you've a kid, what will be more problematic, hearing your kid call someone a retard or telling them to f**k off?

Torn's culture is to call people it, Monarch have an entire sub for it, but its still the most bizarre word that's just allowed to slide. I'm not opposed to censoring swearing, but I think its stupid to censor f**k but not retard. If you're letting people rip that whenever they want, f**k should also be fine.

Suggestion to add more in depth faction log searching

I see little value or benefit in only dropping the f bomb. Personally I think the entire filter should be dropped. Free speech and all that. But if we are going to pick and choose, then just leave it as is.

Sorry but I loathe this kind of argument, especially in the context here - you really want us to remove racial slurs and allow that level of hatred in Torn?

It's blindingly obvious when people say "free speech" in such context what you really mean is "hate speech" and no we won't allow that.

Our goal here is to ascertain change based on the overall community vibe of recent posts, not let you say the N word because you feel Torn should allow any kind of hateful content.

On your point about the censor discouraging people being mean to each other... I disagree. People will still say horrid things to each other both on forums and global chat regardless of a censor. I am glad you guys are listening, and hope that f**k gets uncensored.

It makes no sense to censor f**k but not various other slurs "because they aren't always used as a slur" (while almost always being used as slurs)

I'd be just as fine leaving f**k censored and censoring additional words as I am with uncensoring f**k. Actually I'd probably like that more if we can't have both.

I don't think we should be appealing or encouraging others to fly off the handle with insults, which if the filters were loosened would likely be the end result.

for every funny joke or meme that would and could heighten the experience - you'll find 500 other instances of deranged people using it as generic insults

i saw a friend get censored because he posted a image of his favourite trade union mug.. that I thought was heavy handed. I think theres scope for humour to be not so heavily policed but vitriolic and general bad behaviour should be curtailed

that being said, i feel a lot of this is just a distraction from the two tier rule enforcement but thats another topic i guess

Very interesting putting words in my mouth. I did not say hate speech. I meant it at face value in terms of censorship over specific words. We should be allowed to use words without censorship in my opinion. The context in which words are used should be monitored, as they already are. If that's too much work, then just leave the filter alone.

Very interesting putting words in my mouth. I did not say hate speech. I meant it at face value in terms of censorship over specific words. We should be allowed to use words without censorship in my opinion. The context in which words are used should be monitored, as they already are. If that's too much work, then just leave the filter alone.

Which other words do you think should be ok to use that we currently filter?

I'm not sure if this is a setup for a forum ban. But how about the four letter C word?

Also I'm not sure of all the words that are censored. I prefer to speak the same online as is do in real life. I'm not offended by words, but there are words I do not use. I blame my mom.
