Like these are players who in real life passed away?
That's a bit strange, but I mean, if you want to show your thanks for them playing, that is one way to do it.  It creeped me out a bit, but i mean, it's all cool...just got weirded out.

It's a memorial to those who played and were well thought of.

and it is usually friends and family who want the obituary and memorial.

It's something great that we can do for peoples memory in my opinion.

anyway.. this is for general discussion, moving thread to there

Not a big fan of it myself but i agree with it .
It is a nice way to say a final goodbye to friends in torn that maybe you dont keep contact with them outside of  this game.
Some touching stuff right there xD

It's kind of like how the family of the deceased can ask facebook to leave their page up as a memorial.  Good way to say goodbye to in game friends across the world.

Yeah, I saw this too when RESPO was released... I don't know if it was there before or not.

I was a little fascinated with it when I discovered it, and I looked through all the profiles.

I think it's a nice gesture towards these people who have passed.

It's always been a part of the community page.

Torn has always tried to honour the memories of such players who have left us. It's a little creepy that OP finds that creepy...

I understand why it could weird you out, with it being about death and all. But sometimes people pass away and others don't know what's happened to them. It's a nice way to remember people. In Torn there are little bubbles of close knit communities, the game's been going along for almost 10 years and there are loads of ways to make friends. There's the forums, factions and companies, even people who have a similar play style can form cliques after a while (see busters). It's only natural for people to want to see their friends remembered when they go. Most would want the same, I guess...

Gwash I thought we had this discussion in Global already >.<

I kinda understood when you said you were weirded out at first because you've never seen a game do that which I guess makes sense not like BO2 or Halo has a fallen players community page, granted that would obviously get ridiculously lengthy.

I think it's a great idea and a nice tribute to those who played. It makes me happy to see that some people did play the game and live life to the fullest and that they were worth remembering.

Wrong! When I entered the Busting HOF Top 20, I sent some energy-related (mostly xanax or cans) presents to virtually every active buster I overpassed, because I had respect for them, their deeds, and the inspiration they instilled in me.

I thought it was creepy at first too until I realized that there was no reason for a community to not honor/remember its fallen friends. It's just not common is all.

But people do it. You don't remember Sean Smith? Aka Vile Rat?
    and

These people aren't any less important than Sean Smith was. After looking at it like that, it's become refreshing to me that they're being memorialized here. The separation between real life and MMORPGs is thinner by the day, and this site was probably a good part of their thoughts and lives. It's good to remember the people behind the characters.

I'm familiar with the concept from other organized communities. It's not that unusual, except for the fact that Torn makes it official. If anything that makes the game more personal, and emphasizes the community focus. Now, there are certainly ways to touch up the process. Taking the "deserter" title from those who have passed, for instance.
