"What's so special about him? What's so special about him?" Er're repeated the question as if it were the stupidest thing ever.

"Balthazaar; Soothsayer, Hunter of beasts, leader of Elves, bringer of magic. These are few of the names he has earned amongst my clan, he is no less than a god-like figure. Held in the same level of standing as the spiritual beings we worship in place of your gods.

You truly no nothing of what that demon has done, do you?" Er're looked at John as one would a small child, or rather as a teacher would a small child, with eyes full of an odd lust to educate the old man.

"Is everyone in this country such fools!?" Er're stood in anger; Fine, I shall tell you something of Balthazaar."

Er're seemed to think for a moment before speaking again, sitting back down; "There is a poem about this story in my own language but the translation into this one isn't a fair representation so I shall simply tell you a rough story." Er're took a deep breath, as if he were about to say something immensely weighty;

"In the time before humans were created the great Balthazaar had a...Romance with the goddess Hecate, at the time she ruled over things long since forgotten.

Around this time Zeus decided to create the mortal world, and all of its inhabitants for the gods to rule over. He done so, with the help of his siblings. Creating the sky, earth, sea and all of the creatures that inhabit them but Zeus, in his fear for his seat on Olympus, did not grant the mortal realm the gift of magic.

The other gods agreed, not daring to argue with their king. So, for the first thousand years of our lives, we were blind-and magicless. Totally defenceless to the godly and demonic powers that swirled around our world.

Seeing our helpless state the goddess Hecate took pity upon us and began to scheme a plot to grant us the power of the gods, the power of magic. Knowing she could not rival the power of Zeus on her own she asked her 'partner' Balthazaar for aid, for he was far older than even the gods and was feared for his power. Balthazaar agreed, and together with Hecate he stole a source of magic from Zeus, a staff from his personal armoury, and dropped it in the mortal world.

The man whom found it became the first mage, and with guidance from Balthazaar he spread magic throughout the entire world. This man, we know to be known as Merlin, the first mage.

Now, when Zeus found out that it was the goddess Hecate's doing that spread magic across the mortal world he was furious. He had punished for Prometheus stealing magic, and now one of his own had stolen something as powerful as magic!? This could no go unpunished, or so he thought.

Zeus decided as punishment for her crimes against the god Hecate would feel all of the pain that mortals caused with magic tenfold, for all of eternity.

But, when Balthazaar rose from his own realm to face the god Zeus's judgement. Zeus wavered, for he knew that Balthazaar was even stronger than he, and so he changed Hecate's punishment.

Instead, she was name the goddess of magic and would have to watch over all mages for the rest of time. Which would keep her bound stronger than she used to be to the godly world, so much so she could no longer be with Balthazaar.

It is said they sired two children, and then never saw each other again.

Those children were Oeselyus(Oz-E-Lus) and Dearak(Dee-a-rack), the First born of my race. The first born of the Elves. So, in a way Balthazaar is the father of my race." Er're finished with a shrug; "So, that is why he is so important. That is why I must find him."

"I doubt that very much, few demons would dare attack one of his race never mind Balthazaar himself. As for Hades, from what my friends and I gathered it was your newly appointed gods that defeated him and the rest of the Olympians not Balthazaar." Er're seemed overly pleased with the knowledge that the 'great' Balthazaar had been alive 20 years ago.

"The Elves of Sardo did not originate here, rather they are the descendants of a cast-away clan from my own country. Those that chose to defile our customs and ceased to worship the great spirits, they lost their blessings and so left the country to come here, and spread out through the rest of the world through time.

Yes, that is why my kind are so different from the Elves of this land. We still honour those that birthed us, and watched over us from the days after Hecate became just another goddess under Zeus' control." Er're sighed, his stories were lost on this gentlemen. That much was evident.

"We acknowledge her at special events, pay small tributes to her and the like but she is no longer one of our main hosts." Er're answered John's second question first; "If we could save the Elves of this land from their sacrilege then we would, but they have grown accustomed to greed and power-mongering. No, my group was sent here with a different purpose in mind." It seemed that was all Er're would say on their purpose.

"As for our differences, I assure you there are more than meets the eye. For example in the short years I have been here I have noticed quite the oddity, the Elves of this land seem to age as the other races do. Its quite strange." Er're seemed to think something over for a moment; "I shall ask my elder when next I see him, but I believe they have lost their eternal life by dishonouring themselves.

As such it seems they only live a little, on average, longer than humans. Such short, fruitless lives."

Brunnex2 listened intently to all that he heard before speaking “I thought the Gods created another realm running away to this one when the horseman came. I suppose though that they could have created this realm as opposed to it already being here.”

Hecate must be dead, by now, and Er’re has probably guessed this. He does not seem bothered to have lost the mother of his race.

"The elves that live in Sardo today came from where Er're did but as a conquering army seeking new lands for themselves. As he said though greed and corruption caused them to become what they are today. Though I suspect when the God Artemis created the Kintera she may also have cursed all elves of Sardo. It's possibility at least.

"Your first theory has some serious holes, but I suspect you are correct on the second. I assume that these 'Kintera' as you call them are the results of an Elven spirit entering another Elf? These spirits travel to my country as well, though in sparse numbers." Er're nodded, it seemed that Brunnex was at least a little more knowledgeable about these things than John was. That was good.

“Indeed.” Brunnex2 said “They are the spirits of the elven soldiers who attacked the holy city of Al’Kharrid, The God Artemis cursed them to wander the earth in spirit form for all eternity. When Hades found out about this, though, he taught seven of them how to enter the bodies of normal elves so that they could do his bidding. However one of the seven, a fellow called Desi, taught all the others how to do it and that is how the Kintera started and gained their body-controlling abilities.” He finished searching his mind for anything he’d missed. “Aren’t many about anymore though after Strange captured loads of them.” He added as an afterthought.

There was little point in withholding this information. What were they gonna do; create a Kintera army? Pffft.....

*Several hours passed and the bright day decsended into a cool Sardonian night.

Faolin groaned and sat up, Fen sat up a few seconds later. It was clear the youth hadn't slept all day, he seemed utterly bored; "Hey Faolin, you're up?"

"Yeah.. I am, didn't go to sleep did you?"

"Nah, couldn't. Can't stop thinking about that guy, just don't have a clue why he attacked me like that." Fen lay back down, huffing loudly.

Faolin stood and walked over to the edge of the clearing, he clicked and there was suddenly a camp fire in the centre. He sat down and pulled out his blade; "Perhaps its because you're a demigod, and he wanted to see if you were skilled."

"When will Shilor and Shang be up do you think?" Fen was amazed by the simple act of magic, but he wondered when his friend would arise...

John had, in all honesty, grown bored of the conversation. He'd outlasted a war against Death, and had watched from afar as Gods helped Hull survive, before getting their asses handed to them by Brun and Co. This debate about the birth of Elves was, at best, a minor ignorant to him. So, John backed out of the conversation , summoned smoke blades and began to sharpen them, with little bits of grey smoke flying off them.If asked, he'd say why, but he doubted anyone would.

“Tourivil, you’re up.” He said surprised looking at the elf “Any words of wisdom from the Great Prophet?”

Rend was the last to say hello to this dragon. Perhaps some of this had to do with the fact that he had just finished killing several dragons and several dragons had in turn tried to kill him. Nevertheless it would look rather awkward if everyone else had said something to this large talking, winged beast. After waiting until he was actually the last person to say something, he walked slowly towards the dragon. When he became close enough to speak he stood quietly, trying not to act like he was sneaking up, which he most certainly was not doing... after all Rend does not need to sneak up to his targets.

"Hail Erda I am Rend Blackflame of New Orkanso and I am honourd' to meet ya'."

"Hail Rend Blackflame or New Orkonaso, it is an honour to meet Sardo's second ever Ork Lord." Erda dipped his head.

“There is something you all need to know, for it may affect your decision on whether to come on this journey or not.” Erda's great red eye looked all of the men up and down before he spoke again; “The force that attacked Dale, and then Sardo was a pittance of what Bahamut has under his control.” He paused to let that sink in.

“From what I could gather before I was forced to flee, he has united all of the dragons of Sardo together. The beasts fear his power and even though dragons are secluded beasts when they are not bonded with a rider, as none of this race can be, they fear him so much that they have come under a single banner and from what I can tell their sole purpose is the complete destruction of Sardo.”

“How many of them are there, Ega?” Er're seemed to be smiling slightly about the fact there was an army raised against Sardo. One could wonder why he referred to Erda as Ega instead of by name.

“At least 200, a pittance when talking of a human or Elven army, but these are fully grown dragons nevermind their hatchings. A number of this size could, with relative ease, destroy the country if they attacked at full strength with Bahamut leading them.”

Er're nodded, his smirk increasing in size; “So, we attack the lot of them and wipe them out before they can harm this country?”

“No, with a group so few of us we would be hard pressed to kill that many at once. Instead we shall cut the head off of the snake, if we kill Bahamut the rest of them should scatter back into the wilds where they belong.”

Er're nodded; “So, when do we leave?”

Erda looked at the group; “When you are all ready to do so...”

Brunnex chuckled remembering the name of the city “Unu’Kuth: the stone home.” He answered on the annoying assumption Tourivil had no idea what that was.

“The desertman settlement, Tourivil, a bit of Strange got on you and you conked out. Good news; our death sentences have been repealed. Bad news; you’re a prophet now.”

***

Shang was the first to rise of the pair. He opened his eyes and yawned. For the moment all memory of the day before had gone and it seemed to him like he was still travelling with Fen to the Temple so he sat up and rubbed his eyes looking over at Fen.

He blinked. Once. Twice. Three times. He looked from Fen to Faolin to Shilor. He went to get up and was instantly seized around the shoulders by Shilor who seemed to have suddenly awaken.

“You were going to run, youngling.” He told Shang and at the mention of youngling he remembered. His face paled.

“I’m really..?” He tried to ask faltering.

Shilor nodded letting go of him. “Be happy. You’re lucky it was not Sazh.” There was a boom of thunder in the distance and Shilor glanced at the sky. Sazh must be in Olympus right now.

Shang stood shakily and made his way over to Faolin something dark flittering across his face. Shilor’s eyes widened in panic for the first time and he rugby tackled the poor teenager to the ground. “Don’t you dare.” He whispered venomously in Shang’s ear.

Surprisingly none of Shang’s bones felt broken. He was definitely bruised though from the fall itself. “He killed my Uncle!” He reasoned.

“You’re Uncle is alive but it is your time to fulfil your destiny. You will not mention him again until I bring it up.” He told Shang asserting his position as the alpha male in the relationship.

Shang felt an outpouring of emotion but said nothing allowing Shilor to pick him up. He gave Faolin a dirty look and said no more.

Faolin sighed heavily; "Shang, I'm sorry you had to see that fight. I can offer nothing other than my sincerest apology, I hope you can forgive me in time." Faolin said nothing about the fact that Brunnex was still alive, it was not his place to say.

Fen's face brightened when he saw Shang rise, though he was slightly confused by Shang and Shilor's actions he was still happy that they were both ok; "Shang, your up! We were attacked when we left the temple and Faolin saved us, it was dam well out of the blue as well.

A guy just appeared from nowhere and kicked my ass for no reason." Fen pouted.

"As I said, its most likely because your a demigod. Mortals love testing themselves against demigods when given the chance, well when I say mortals. I mean power-hungry, or insane, mortals."

John again cracked his neck. "Is this all who are going to attack Bahamut? Er're, Rend, Erda, Brunnex, me, The king and his son?" John asked, assuming the king was coming alon. When he mentioned Sin, there was no antagonistic feelings in it. It seemed he had truely believed Sin was the Kings son.

"I'm not saying it's not enough, just that I've been in bigger hunting parties. And some of those didn't have happy endings."

" I think the King would be able to handle himself well against a few dragons, if he were so inclined to fight one." John said, pondering the question.

The smoke weapons seemed much smaller now. One could only guess at their sharpness. It seemed like John thought he'd be using smoke weapons again. It seemed he had a certain stratagy he would use.

Er're stood straighter now; "How shall this work, even a dragon of your size cannot carry us all."

"I shall fly overhead, whilst you will have to move at a quick pace on the ground. Bahamut has erected magical barriers so I cannot teleport us there, which is a major inconvenience"

"I could keep up with you on foot alone, but I doubt we will be able to travel very fast in such a large group. Even if the others are on horseback it may take a while." Er're was firing these questions out now.

"It will just have to do." Erda replied curtly.

Rend butted into a conversation being had as soon as he heard his name.

"My armour and weapons are required and my horse' is more than able to handle it."

Orkish horses were bred for endurance, size and speed as their riders are substantially bigger than those of the other races. Although the horses are bigger and a little slower their size makes them perfect for battle and warding off battle. The horses are hard to scare as they are legitimately so much bigger than their human counterparts they do not see danger as acutely as their smaller cousins as they find less danger around them. Rend was not used to people worrying about him and his horse, as normally it was him having to pick up the dead and wounded of the puny and weak.
