As Head Administrator of Pain I decree:

John would have heard Erdas wings from quite a distance away, so it would not have come as much of a surprise to him when the Dragon let rip a mighty roar, though why it done so may be a question he would be asking himself if he wasnt a super-sleuth batman-Sherlock hybrid and as such knows the answer already.

A second later Faolin crashed to earth, sword drawn, and dashed towards John with the intent to kill clear on his face. It was only when he had raised his sword almost passed the point of no return that Faolin seemed to take the details of Johns face in, at which point his body went half-rigid as he fought against his already in-motion body. After a slight stumble backwards Faolin began sheathing his sword with an apologetic smile; Sorry, I didnt realize it was you John. Somethings throwing off my senses by quite a bit, no doubt the fallout of whatever the hell happened here.

Without waiting for a reply, sword now re-sheathed, Faolin moved towards Fenrir and knelt by the boy as he began checking his vitals. After a moment he sighed in relief; Badly beaten, got Tartarus knows how many broken bones but hell live....Lets see this one. Faolin said as he stood and began moving towards Ryuk.

John had heard Erdas wings coming towards him from afar, and only looked up when Erda had let out the roar. By the time John had looked up, and put names to both the person coming towards him and the creature which had roared at him, Faolin had already stopped.

"Yeah, this kid sure has endurance." Then as Faolin started walking towards Ryuk, he replied "The bodyguards still breathing, so they'll both need healing. That's not what's worrying me though." He finished, looking directly at the Shade sword.

What's worrying you then, if not the nearly dead duo and this scarred-wasteland? Faolin asked as he checked Ryuk's vitals, not that he didn't trust John or anything he just wanted to make sure himself. Upon realizing that the Ferrock wouldn't survive without aid Faolin sent a jolt of magic into his system that would kick-start some rejuvenation.

Just as Faolin rose back to his feet Erda took one step towards the Shade-sword, stopped, and then began kneading the ground with his right fore-claw; That. Whatever that is...I've never seen craftsmanship like it and it doesn't feel right..

Faolin looked from his uncharacteristically anxious partner to the a strange sword rising from a mound of debris. He had neither seen anything like it either, which wasn't too surprising since his life before bonding with Erda was pretty mundane, but the fact that he had never seen it AND that it unnerved John gave Faolin a queer feeling about it. Which was only intensified by the strange aura surrounding the sword.

Faolin began moving towards the sword, flexing his right hand in preparation to yank the sword from the pile to get a better look at it.

"That, my friend, is a shades sword. Back 50 or so years ago, during the war against Death, his Shades used these blades. I wouldn't touch it if I were you though, it could be extremely dangerous, especially if a minion of Death used it." John told Faolin, getting to his feet.

"What worries me is that considering how many died in that war against Death, all the Shades were presumed dead. If one is still alive, does that mean that perhaps Death still is?"

The very air around Faolin seemed to freeze as John uttered the word 'Shade', the hulking man turned slowly fixing John with his hardest stare; Did you just say Shade?

Yes. He did, and he was right in what he said as well.

Faolin spun around to find the source of the voice standing atop the pile of debris, sheathing the Shade-sword in a black sheath inscribed with an insane amount of glyph-work, and was quite startled to see Shino so soon again. For Sazh to have allowed him back to the mortal world must mean that this sword did indeed belong to a Shade, and that could only possibly mean that Fenrir had fought, and somehow slain, a Shade here today.

Before Faolin could even begin processing that fact Shino spoke again; The sheath will contain the swords power, but it's master will have to maintain a rather large input of magic to keep the enchantments strong enough to hold it all.

It's master? You mean the Shade's still alive? Faolin asked, Erda snarled at the thought and unfurled his wings as if to flee the potentially dangerous area.

No, it's got a new master now. Shino said blankly, then tossed the sheathed sword on the ground next to Fenrir....

"The kid? He has the sword now? Correct me if I'm wrong but he didn't exactly have a large amount of magical skill. How is he supposed to keep the magic in the sword going?" John asked. That the shade was definately dead did warm his heart a bit though.

John is right, the sheer amount of Glyphs on that sheath tells me that it must require a fair amount of latent magic to keep them all active. Whatever Fenrir accomplished here today doesn't change the fact that he is no mage, even my best efforts in trying to teach him magic has yielded results only in the field of lightning and electricity.

I'll teach him how to contain the sword's power, as well as a few other tricks. Shino said with a smirk; No offence Faolin, but I'm a little above your pay-grade power wise and I have a feeling I can teach the boy a thing or two you simply couldn't.

Pride wounded sufficiently Faolin nodded glumly; I suppose that's that sorted then but...Why don't you just take the sword back to the underworld, better for us all if you just throw it into Tartarus and be done with it.

Impossible I'm afraid. Shino said with a shrug of his shoulder; Shade-swords are bound to the mortal world, even a God can't take them from this plain, nor has a way been found to fully seal them or to destroy them. Fenrir slew it's last master, making him the new owner of the sword in mine and Sazh's eyes, so I've been sent to make sure he can handle the thing.

I'd rather not force anything too troublesome on Fenrir right now, but I guess that boat has sailed now. John, I left the field too soon to find anything out about whatever army was heading to the battlefield did you stay long enough to gather any information on them?

Elves. Shino said blankly, then left John to fill in whatever he could...

"He's right, it's elves. What this means, I don't know, but they certainly looked like they were quite the army to overtake a small city. Where they were going all the way out here I can only guess, if they did not come to wipe out the Sardonian army gathered here." John said to Faolin.

"Elves?" Faolin asked suspiciously, shooting a glance towards Erda; "If they've made it this far into Sardo with such forces then we have to assume they've captured at least a few towns already."

Shino made a grunting noise deep in his throat and half-turned around; "I can sense them from here, a perk of my restricted higher-spirit powers, and I can also sense there's a congregation of magic inside of Sardo that doesn't belong there. My guess is our little invaders have taken over the capital already, and that army was sent to take care of the Sardonian army before we could recollect our strength. No doubt the cowards inside of Sardo sold out our location, troop size and what we were up to."

Faolin's eyes darted to Fenrir instantly, he hoped the boy was out of it enough that he didn't hear that. His newly married lover was in that city after all, and if the city had been captured then either she was too or...

"Right, John until further notice consider Sardo under enemy occupation. Return to your troops, get them somewhere secure and wait till things pan out fully. If Shino is right and Sardo really has been captured then it seems I'll be joining a resistance for the second time..." Faolin bent down and picked Ryuk up by the scruff of his neck as if he were a dog, throwing him over a shoulder lazily as he began moving towards Fenrir.

"Shino, if you're coming with us then I ask that you make yourself useful. Go ahead to Sardo and scout things out, if you can save a few people then do so but don't risk being detected. Fenrir needs to learn how to control his new sword, and if there's to be another war then we'll all need time to heal and get stronger to beat this new foe."

Having now picked Fenrir up as he did Ryuk Faolin began moving towards Erda; "If Sardo has fallen then there's few places that will remain safe for long...Erda and I will take Fenrir and Ryuk and go and find somewhere safe to hideout for now, after that who knows where we'll go to train."

With a few flaps of Erda's wings Faolin and his two charges were in the sky atop the Dragon's back. Faolin was running through a list of safe-havens in his head and only one was standing out. If all of Sardo was a war-zone there would still be two places that would be relatively safe; Farra'kull, the Dwarven mountain and the southern border of Sardo where rolling hills dominate the landscape, and that area too is home to Dwarves.

Those Dwarves are reclusive though, far different from the angry red-faced smith Dwarves of the mountains. No, those Dwarves are of the hill-clans, those who's ancestors were banished from their home, though they had quickly turned that shame into an honor. Their culture was different to an extent but still had Dwarven roots, but luckily they were far friendlier.

Faolin just hoped that they would shelter a dragon-rider, a Demi-God and his Ferrock-guard for a few months whilst Fenrir was trained. In a way this played into Faolin's plans for Fenrir's future, the only shame was that Shane's life was no longer a certainty meaning half of Faolin's dream was possibly gone.

Still, there was always Fenrir and the boy symbolized everything Faolin needed for his plan. So long as he had Fenrir then there was hope for a better future, not just for Sardo but for the entire world if everything played out properly...

-

Shino gave John a final dip of his head as Faolin became a distant dot on the horizon, then vanished. He would do as Faolin asked and see if he could get any survivors from Sardo, though he had little hope.

He left a parting message on the wind for John; "It was good seeing you again John, and good luck. You'll need it"

Nine months have passed in the land of Sardo, and they have been perhaps the most challenging nine months in living memory for the people of Sardo.

A little over nine months ago to the day the Elven army that invaded, capturing Sardo along with a few other major settlements, was reinforced by a larger number of Elven soldiers that bolstered their garrison in the country to the point that what little resistance there was from the Sardonians was smashed within a few weeks. That's not to say that the Elves slaughtered every Sardonian, far from it actually, but rather that any resistance was met with full force and no mercy. Prisoners of war were a bonus, not an objective.

In particular for anyone who has analysed the Elven agenda it is quite obvious that their main objective when dealing with enemy opposition, or upon capturing a new area of land, is to take the majority of mages/magic users in that region and place them in a camp where they are put under strict watch. The reason for this, although not ever made explicit by any Elf, is plainly to limit the amount of Resistance Sardo can put up. Without mages, after all, any army would stand no chance against the Elves.

Speaking of Resistance, one has risen once again, this time lead by the former Lords of Sardo, whom maintain their titles. It is rarely spoken of amongst Sardonians but if someone ever wanted to join the Resistance then they wouldn't have to search too hard, though they'd have to do so in utter secrecy since the Elves kill anyone they suspect of trying to join the Resistance.

All in all the Resistance hasn't really resisted that much, they maintain a small hold on Sardonian soil, near the western and southern edges mostly, but do so quite laxly. Their forces are never seen in bulk for any longer than the length of an ambush, or a little longer if a townspeople need to be recruited or set free from Elven confinement. Amongst the Resistance there is no great figures that Sardonian armies are so usually famed for having, there is no Shang Tao or Sir Tillion to lead the way for the common folk.(Upon mail I can edit this part if your character has been specifically active in the Resistance.)

There are whispered rumours however of two great warriors that combat the Elven forces, though even thinking about them seems to attract unwanted attention from the Elves. One of the figures is the war-hero Faolin, whom is said to fight side by side with his dragon and dispenses hot-fury on any Elf he comes across. The other has been said to be many different figures, some say he's another Dragon rider being trained by Faolin, other say he's one of the masked men that terrorized Sardo and reports back that up by his apparent use of mist and sightings of a masked-figure on the field with Faolin. These two figures however are rarely seen by Sardonians and never seem to attack, or defend, anything of real worth in the war-effort.

Orkonaso has fallen entirely, the Elves razed it to the ground and transported it's peoples to several nearby prisoner camps, telling the prisoners they would be released when all Resistance was put down and Sardo returned to normal. Farra'kull remains strong but is under heavy assault at the moment, though the Elves find little in the way of passage within the tight tunnels controlled almost entirely by the Dwarven mechanics and demolition-experts. Throll is a shining beacon of hope for all mages as it offers safe-haven to anyone who can proven any competence with magic, and it has lent it's aid in several ambushes made by the Resistance, it has also thus far avoided any heavy attempted invasion.(Sardonians like to say to themselves that the Threllos are still far stronger than the Elves and that's why Throll remains safe.) SummerStar is the official headquarters of the Resistance, though upon inspection it is always a ghost-town, and remains the seat of Lord Emmon Troy whom is the defacto-leader of the Resistance. Springvale held on for several months but fell under Elven invasion, with great losses to the Resistance. The capital is under complete Elven control, and has been rebuilt somewhat since it's capture though in a basic manner and not at all like its once-grand design. The capital is also where the Elves have based themselves and is where the commanding officers are thought to centre.

So that''s the state of things, Sardo is almost totally Elven territory now and they control it with iron-force. If you see one Elf there's probably another four within shouting distance, and everyone is stronger than you'd care to admit.

-

(This will be added to the first page of the thread as to be referred to when needed)

Notes on Elven controlled regions: Moving around in land controlled by the Elves is highly dangerous because they constantly have large patrols moving around the country, both looking for the Resistance wherever they are hiding and moving from place-to-place. Attacking an Elven stronghold, or even a patrol, will not go unnoticed no matter how stealthily you do it and unless you're very quick about your business reinforcements will come to screw you over.

Towns and such controlled by the Elves are actually mostly left to their own devices as usual, so long as the townspeople show no wish to fight their new Elven masters they are left alone to live normal lives as much as possible. The Elves do, however, do random spot checks for any hidden-mages or Resistance members and will take any discovered individuals off to a camp, or on failure to do that will kill the individual. In cases where a town needs to trade with other towns to survive the Elves will overview the transactions heavily but will allow trade to continue, there are even cases where Sardonian villages have been struggling greatly and the Elven soldiers stationed there have lended a hand, be it magically or by securing new trade-routes ect. All in all for an army of foreign invaders the Elves aren't actually that bad, so long as your docile and not a mage.

Teleportation: Teleportation nowadays is not a wise idea, and any mage capable of teleportation would have learned that the hard way by now. Teleportation, even the smallest teleportations, require a sizeable amount of magic and using such a level of magic never goes unnoticed by the Elves and quickly brings a squad of Elves down around your head, and that's not something that usually ends well for Sardonians. The same goes for the Elves though, the Resistance monitors the land for Teleportation and makes note of it meaning that when the Elves use teleportation, which is surprisingly rare, we can take a guess as to what they're up to.
(Please note, teleporting really isn't advisable when any other option is available and will most likely draw the wrath of any body with a lick of sense upon their learning of you doing it, as well as a group of Elves sent to kill or capture you.)

The Elves themselves: It's plain to all that these Elves are unlike Sardonian Elves in many ways, the most notable of which is their unnatural strength. Every Elf appears to be a rather competent mage and a deft swordsman, in fact many have noted them to be of equal if not greater strength of body, mind and magic as that of a Kintera. Couple this with the fact that not one of them appears to be older than twenty five years old and as such in the prime of their youth and that makes them a seemingly unbeatable foe. Their speaking manner is very formal, though there seems to be a division amongst them of two particular parties; the first side seem like genuinely pleasant individuals whilst the others are often rude or sarcastic when addressing Sardonians. In the same way the two sides deal with enemies quite differently; although neither group would falter in killing an enemy, the former group would at least try to capture them first whilst the latter wouldn't bother.

Their arms and armour are crafted to a level on par with both Orkish sturdiness and Dwarven beauty, if not a little superior to both. Their armour is uniform amongst all the Elves and is shaped like interlocking leaves and is light green in colour, it is very light and barely seems to restrict their movement at all. Their weapons of choice are a one-handed sword with a shield in their free hand, or a long-bow made of a strange purple-black wood that allows them to shoot arrows far-farther than any other archer on record(Other than Krom of course). Their swords are of a longsword design usually but are all slightly designed to suit the user, as well as being a vast range of vibrant colours.

The Elves fight like zealots and will do all they can, including committing suicide if all else fails, to avoid capture. If by some stroke of luck an Elf is captured alive and is stopped before he can kill himself physically they perform a strange mental-process that renders them a lobotomite with absolutely no memory of anything, making them useless prisoners. If, by some uncommon method, an Elf is made unable to use this technique then they will do all else they can before giving up even the smallest scrap of information. Physical torture is pointless, not even a Demon could break one of these Elves given a decade. Mentally the Elves are stronger than most human minds can grow, but they're not impossible to break under normal circumstances.

Religion: Although the Elves do not follow the Three they have no problem at all with Sardonians carrying out worship, they even allow some travelling to shrines etc under guard. Surprisingly they have made absolutely no attempt whatsoever to take over the temple of the Three, nor have they even stationed soldiers near it at all.

Other-worldly interaction; The Gods have made no attempt to help the Sardonians at all, neither has any other spirit or demon, it as if the spiritual worlds and the mortal worlds have been blocked from contacting one another. If you have an other-worldly character please mail me before you do anything to interact with the mortal world, otherwise; nane of that pish

Reported Casualties from the last war: It is important to note that if you haven't been active in the war effort very much then Sardo probably thinks your dead, either from the last big battle or because of the Elves, and as such when you resurface they may be a little shocked by your presence, or even not believe you are actually the person you claim to be if they don't have previous first hand experience with you. People that are certainly presumed dead are:

Sir Tillion
Lord Rend Blackflame
Shane Wickerwol(Though not well known around Sardo)
Tourivil
Lao(Though not well known around Sardo)
Lord Blightly
Fenrir Shalza(Though not well known around Sardo)
Toun
Volzal-tor (Though not well known around Sardo)
(If your character has not been active in the war I'll be adding his name here after your post stating so.)

It had been a long 9 months. Literally right after the war, the assassins all but disappeared. Some said that they had been ready for some sort of attack on Sardo, while others thought that they were wiped out in the war. The Mystery of the Assassins rose again, and they became almost like shadows of ghosts. No one knew how to contact them, but if you wanted someone dead long enough, they would become dead. You would then find some cash you had kept somewhere safe would've been robbed, with a note explaining payment was taken. It was very sneaky, very quiet, and it suited the assassins well.

There had been a few times when the Elves had tried to ambush the assassins, and sometimes it worked, but most of the time, any meeting was simply ignored, until a letter was delivered a few days later. The letter didn't blame the person, just the elves.

John, the current leader of the Assassins, had kept them small. They were ambush strikers now, performing their job when they needed to. They had all the cash they needed, and people could quite easily go farm. In fact, that's what quite a few people did, they set up a small village near the Xing border, and began a farming village. It was somewhat profitable, and kept them alive.

John had taught the few mages left in the assassins guild to keep their magic levels extremely low. He himself was so good at this, that he was able to walk in villages. That's where he was currently, and he walked exacly like his age showed, leaning on his staff, taking his time.

The arrival of a newcomer to the small village of Karthsford was not unnoticed by the Elven hosts, and it was not long until a singular Elf was given the go ahead, mentally of course, to leave his post and see what the old man wanted.

As Ju're(Jew-ray) approached John he saw only an old man and thought little of what low level of danger he could pose to the relative peace of this village, in his long years in this game though he had learned to disregard simple appearances most of the time meaning he wouldn't be lax in his reason here today.

Drawing close to John Ju're smile pleasantly and waved him over to the side of the street that they both walked along, in different directions of course. To ignore the blatant sign would be rude and would only draw more attention, and of course going towards the Elf would start a conversation that could potentially, if John done a botch job, turn out badly for someone like John.

Either way Ju're watched as a group of farmers moved between him and John with a wheelbarrow full of supplies to be sold at the local market...

John noticed the elf wave him over. He first stopped, and watched as the farmers pass between him and the elf, before continuing to walk once they had passed. He headed towards the elf, as to continue would undoubtable bring unneeded attention, and he doubted old age could be his excuse.

"Good day sir elf." John said once the elf was within earshot, his voice grumbly as ones does get in old age.

"I am just visiting the town." John replied. "I am exploring as much of Sardo as I can, and fulfilling an old promise in doing so. I don't have much life left in me, and thought it best used for this purpose." He explained, bowing his head slightly as he did so. "You could almost say I'm on a pilgramage, but there's nothing religious about my travels" He finished, smiling slightly.

"I see." Ju're said without a hint of suspicion around him, why should he have reason to suspect the old man was lying after all?

"You travel alone then? Few dare walk these roads alone nowadays, my kinsmen are wary of lone wanderers on the road and the Resistance are often making those unwilling to aid their cause vanish on their travels, either to join their side or to sit by the side of your Gods."

I see no one on my travels, except Elves and fellow travellers." John replied, blinking in thought, and looking up at Ju're.

"When you leave town inform one of my kinsmen of your destination, so that we can check that you get there safely on a later date. Other than that I wish you a fair day and safe travels." Ju're gave John a slight bow and then moved off in the direction the farmers had went, he wanted to see if the market was still as vacant as it had been this past month. Things hadn't been going too well for this particular village, though the outlying villages were doing better he had heard.

John nodded as Ju're left. Of course he had little intention to actually inform an elf of his destination, but plans change. As it was though, he headed towards the bar, where drinks are good and secrets are kept.

The moment John walked into the bar he was spotted, as good as he was at keeping his 'weak old man' disguise up there was little use in using it when someone knew you well for its use.

John would have enough time to get a seat and order a drink before a man from near the centre of the room would break off from a conversation with a Scorpionman and an Ork and approach him with shadows growing under his eyes, his intent was obviously not benign...

John took his drink and sat in the corner. It was obvious he was an outsider, so he tried to limit how many people remembered him. He saw the man walk over to him however.

The man was of middle age but his face show decades more than that, his head was almost entirely bald and his eyes were hard as stone. He sat down across from John without waiting for an invitation, and after a moment of glaring he spoke; "I didn't think there was any of your kind left, assassin." He spat the word in only the way someone from the other side of the law could; "Thought you'd abandoned us like the rest of them."

"Considering quite a few of us are magically adept, we had to first hide ourselves. Don't you think they would've mentioned it, if the assassins guild was destroyed?" John replied, his voice less grumbly and more normal.

"Assassins guild?" The man said with a bite in his voice; "All I saw was a bunch of men and women, just like any other I've seen, that die just as easy as any others I've seen. The only difference is the other soldiers at least have the pride to stand and fight the Elves, you're kind are different apparently." The man eyed John for a time, then added; "Or do you say different man?"

"Why fight the elves head on when that doesn't work? Working behind the scenes, we are still alive, and we have limited their effect. Of course, it is still felt all around, but they are made blind and kept blind." John replied. "You yourself haven't changed much."

"Bah, don't kid yourself old man you don't have a clue who I am." The man said bluntly; "The fact is I've only ever seen you once, and that was when I was with the Sardonian army defending your blasted Fort all those months ago. If it wasn't for that we wouldn't be having this conversation, and maybe you wouldn't have the chance to prove you assassins aren't the cowards everyone thinks you are, the chance to prove your loyalty..."

"You forget, the elves think we're dead. It isn't cowardice to know when you've lost a fight, it's accepting defeat. It's rising afterwards that determines who you are, and we are getting ready to rise again. I assume you're here to lead me somewhere?"

"No, I'm here to fight, and if you're not then I suggest you run back to whatever hole you crawled out of." It was quite clear that this man had no respect for John at the moment, and that wouldn't change if John chose not to aid whatever cause this man was talking of.

"There's sixteen of us, and this town is guarded by just over twenty of those pointy-eared bastards. We're outnumbered but we'll take em' out one-by-one, or thats the plan, you in?" The man had leaned over the table and was talking in a whisper now, barely audible even for John whom was only inches away.

He spoke so quietly for good reason, discussing such things aloud usually resulted in the death of everyone involved...

"And how do you plan to do such a thing? Even if you are able to take out one each, there's still at least four others."

"Well then, if it happens that we're caught before we can kill them all then I guess it comes down to sword on sword. Now, are you in or are you-" The man was cut off when the door to the bar suddenly exploded off of it's hinges, flying inwards and almost going straight through the back door of the bar.

In an instant every patron was on the floor, cowering for their lives, except for John and the man, whom was trading sharp looks with the two individuals he had been talking with before.

Before the dust settled two Elves walked in, one scanned the room slowly whilst the other wasted no time in raising his already drawn sword towards John and the man; "You two, your little scheme goes no further. Move a muscle and I'll cut you to pieces, play nice and I might even let you survive."

The Elf began moving towards them, his sword prepared by his side.

The man looked towards John to see what the assassin would do, as it stood he himself was unarmed and unarmoured so he would stand little chance against two elves alone...
