damn thats cold, but a natural disaster...absolutely not, whoever said that is a fool. tornado, hurricane, earthquake you cant escape once it hits. Cold go inside turn the heater on and or bundle up, homeless can go to a homeless shelter or a hospital or other places that stay open 24/7. That weather sucks but it sure as hell ain't tragic or something idiots such as most of the people here should get upset at somebody just because they think its a joke.

'course his signature doesn't really help his image of not being a prick.

then again...why have sympathy for somebody who lives in a place know to be prone to the weather happening...
like living in tornado ally and saying "i cant believe we go hit by a tornader" or living in florida and crying because your house is under water.

Wow. Yes it could easily turn into a natural disaster. Not sure if you're vaguely referring to me, but I certainly said that before. Not sure what my signature has to do with me being a "prick".

Just aside from the pipes on homes freezing, this kind of cold could easily freeze the water in sewage pipes causing millions in damage and cutting people off from very basic necessities like water and plumbing. Not everyone has the time or foresight to build an outhouse so that you have somewhere to go in the event that the city plumbing fails. Electricity could easily fail plunging the entire region into a very cold death trap for anyone not prepared properly. Forget the homeless. Anybody left out in the cold has absolutely no chance.

So yes, this could very easily turn into a natural disaster that requires special response to save lives.

I'd also like to point out that there is nowhere on this planet that you can escape from the wrath of mother nature. Everywhere there are dangers from heat, cold, earthquakes, tornadoes, typhoons, hurricanes, tidal waves, etc.... Even if you think you're safe from natural disasters just wait until your fellow human beings take away that veil of safety.

Having said that, criticizing someone for where they live is the most arrogant asinine thing I've ever heard on these forums. How dare you call anyone a prick when clearly you are much more deserving of said title.

i was indeed talking about the "hail satan" sig my friend.

But as for the rest, i have lived through hurricanes and multiple tornados. I grew up in Virginia and worked construction there. Been many times it drops below zero without wind chill. I now live in West Texas just outside of the section considered tornado ally. I have recently worked for 15 hours in -20 F due to pipes on a feed yard bursting. So believe me, i know what could happen i dont need some random guy online telling me about something he has most likely never had to deal with. Maybe you should ask a question or two before jumping to a conclusion thanks.

FYI, pipes freezing and having to shit outside doesn't even come close to being on the same level as a natural disaster. As for power lines going down, temperature alone will not cause power outages, takes moisture build up to break them. So again how does this even come close to a natural disaster? Maybe you need to take a look back to the damages hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, fires cause.

(also, in order for city pipes to freeze and make it so people have no drinking water will take more then a day or so of cold, and this system is going to pass by in roughly 2-3 days and will only be this cold for about 24 hours)

as for the homeless, as i have said. They can go to hospitals and other places that stay open 24/7. So no they are far from having no chances. (im sure there are targets up there, they will stay open just for that reason)

now as for the comment you made about me being a prick, you are open to your opinion of what i have said but it surely doesn't make it right or true.

Sure it does. When you don't have anywhere to crap outside because it's 35 below, no power, no plumbing and you're forced to crap in a corner for two days? Yeah that's a disaster. Not to mention the way that it's actually calculated is the dollar amount of damage that is done to the local infrastructure.

and as i have said, everything you claim could happen would take these temperatures longer to do then what it will be around. So the point you are arguing is void from the get go.

damn image fail...to lazy to look for another, it was the aftermath of a hurricane that hit VA while i lived there.

No that's not the comparison I'm making. Would you say the damage done by a tornado is the same as the damage done by a wild fire? How about a typhoon? There are different kinds of disasters, and one doesn't have to be of an epic scale to qualify. As long as it's threatening the lives of a region of people, and causing millions of dollars in damage, that's a natural disaster.

I'll concede that I don't know how long it would take for the city pipes to be damaged, but it's not like the temps are just going to rocket back up to above freezing after two or three days.

now we getting weather reports on torn...wtf

This is a non-Torn related area of the forum UE. Being a Minnesotan myself (and a former Californian) I get it that some things are regional and do not affect you. However, how does it affect you that we are pulling together and talking about this arctic blast.
Your acerbic wit should be used for good instead of evil. Like the South Park "Blame it on Canada" cartoon. If I was scoring your posts, +2 for that and -10 for this dick comment.

it affects me since i live in illinois and its gonna get colder then my calloused black heart but its a minor inconvenience and not worthy of an emergency statement from the OP, people up north live in this sort of weather all the time.

As for my acerbic wit, well as you can see by my forum sig i am not trying to win the nobel peace prize

sorry, but there are life threatening temperatures all summer long here in west texas with fires on top in eastern New Mexico (i live on the boarder) that never even make it to headine news in VA because it isnt a natural disaster. Ill agree to disagree with you just for the sake of saving both of our time. (the picture i was going to show was the result of a catagort 2 hurricane i think it was, so it isnt extream by ANY means)

no the temperature will not go up to 30F in 3 days, but it will be well above what it needs to be for people complaining now to suck it up. i think the coldest day i seen looking at the maps was about -10 give or take a few degrees. (not including windchill, which has no effect on pipes, unless they are above ground.)

my apologies for the image. I must not have copied the right image and picked a little tornado from tornado ally instead.

Therefor I would call it a potential natural disaster.

Gangsta? hmm funny i dont recall ever portraying a "gangsta" so try again.Show me my "gangsta" role or evidence of it. Sad that a nearly 50 year old man is still chasing me around a forum making lame insults, I take it you like following young men around since you seem to want to comment on anything i have to say or are you using your insults as a defense mechanism since it seems anytime someone doesnt agree with your point of view you end up just insulting them. So in that aspect you are no better then me or anyone else in this forum, just a sad lonely old man who gets agitated by anyone with half a braincell who outwits you in a verbal sparring session.

BACK ON TOPIC

The eskimos and many other people live in weather worse then this for months on end. This is an inconvenience and a discomfort at worse. Get a few blankets, crank the heat up and in a few days all is well. As i stated before comparing this to a tornado or hurricane is asinine. If your worried bout the homeless and the poor little kitty cats then open your house to them or stfu. If you cant handle the cold for a few days then move to Equador or some other tropical place. This is not a natural disaster.

As for me ill be having a BBQ in the balmy -15 degree weather with -45 windchills if anyone is hungry.

Made even more extreme by your insistence on using Fahrenheit.

-30 F = -34.4444' C

It would seem more extreme in Celsius, in this case.

What is this madness!?!
(i'd argue that the extremeness is still larger as the difference between "normal" and the present is larger numerically... but i cant be bothered and think we should all just agree on Kelvin.

another way of looking at this weather we are having this winter is that the cost is high.

Between rising hydro, home heating costs, weather related insurance claims, increased use of emergency services etc.

Same as with other more dramatic weather events like tornadoes, typhoons and the like, we the peons end up paying the price.

We took boiling water and work and threw it outside... Everything turned to ice/smoke before it even hit the ground

I had my car parked in the docks at work since it's heated... And drove out and not even a minute later did I hear ice forming/cracking as I drove.

It's pretty cold out here in Chicago.

The other day was -58 here in South Dakota.
The high all this week is 0.
Once it hits about -20 it all feels the same.

Quite the chill this winter in North America. We are having temps below the multi year average.

Stay warm my friends.
